Is Gears of War Judgment really that bad?

I can check one sec

Just played through like half a section with a reaver landing on a rooftop and I threw a frag on it and the frames didn't die so you should be good

Alright, I'll give it a go then. Thanks man.

You know, I don't know much about the quality of this game.

My friend brought over his Xbox 360 and played it at 1080p on my 55" tv.

It looked really really really good and super clean and smooth. I was kind of shocked after cramming the Uncharted series and playing Last of Us. Gears Judgment impressed me more graphically.

Does this still run like ass on BC? Gears 3 was a little iffy at points and I heard this one was even worse.

Yeah seems they updated it. I do recall when it first came out the performance was bad. But not it seems at least on par with how it was on 360.

I can remember one to two major setpieces from Gears of War games quite easily. As well as major villains.

I can't remember anything about Judgment. I feel like speaks to its quality and how memorable it was as an experience

It launched with 4 maps. If that doesn't say how screwed up the development was, I don't know what will.

Of course there were a lot of terrible things about the game. Many other users have addressed it in their posts. It truly was a bs excuse for a gears game. I did really like overrun mode though. It was basically the only redeeming factor to the entire game. Problem was, every facet of the game was shallow, overrun included.

Campaign is great especially on harder modes and with coop.
MP is a pile of shit

Best thing it did was add
Breechshot
Markza
Booshka
Sofia

Nope it's not a bad game.
I think most people felt tired of gears by the time this was released.

I actually just played through it three months ago, coming from a person who put 1200 hours in gears 3 horde mode/score campaign/MP.

I heavily enjoyed this game. I skipped it originally cause I was tired of the premise.

It's a great game that you should try!

I hope you guys are talking about the Single Player aspect of it and not the multiplayer because the multiplayer was 3 steps back from Gears 3. Other than weapons and characters the mp was NOTHING like the previous games. And as for gears 4 more of the same is great. Gears multiplayer formula is almost perfect, 4 is showing some nice changes but not changing it completely like Judgement did. And if its not broken don't fix it so I'd gladly take more of the same if its like Gears 3 mp.

Yeah, I'm strictly talking about the campaign.

Well it's getting way more praise than I expected which is a good sign. I have no interest in the multiplayer which seems to be universally disliked anyway, just the single player campaign. Although I don't like the sound of different control scheme. But I have an Elite so I can change it around that way.

So it's essentially a SP version of Horde Mode then? That actually sounds good. Gives me a chance to give it a try, I haven't tried it in any of the games yet and from what I have seen/heard I have a feeling that will be where I will spend most of my time in 4. Was a little bummed GoW:U didn't have it.

Checked HLTB, it's saying around 7-8 hours, I think I'll give it a crack.

It's campaign is a blast, if you are into the gears gameplay or story or both you will ll have fun with it. It fleshed out some of the characters, tidies up some story holes and has a great weapon set. It's MP isn't amazing but personally I've never felt gears MP was.

I really like it I really liked the smart spawn system which felt like it worked well and the challenges are unqiue enough to spice up the game play when it's needed. I maxed them all challenges on my first play which unlocks an additional story segment set during Gears 3.

I personally found the encounters better than most of what was set up in GoW3

No. Fun game. Great campaign held up by constant end-of-level score ranking pauses that kill pacing, but otherwise very good. Multiplayer was also fun but limited by map number

It took a lot of risks.

It scrapped the tried and tested control scheme established in earlier games, pushed vertical gameplay like no other entry in the series and completely revamped the traditional campaign structure - to name a few changes.

Sadly it told a story no one really cared about, lacked content and just didn't feel as cohesive as the mainline titles.

Worst of all, it stripped the series of it's identity by removing key mechanics and modes.

Epic and People Can Fly should be commended for really deconstructing the standard formula and remixing it into something fresh, but it ultimately failed.

Is it a bad game, though? Nowhere near. I loved the declassified modifiers.

Hmm sounds like I missed out with Judgement. I thought Gears 3 was pretty mediocre and I don't like the standard Gears MP very much, rolling shotgun mother fuckers everywhere (or at least that's what it felt like). Sounds like I might have enjoyed Gears Judgement MP more. Still, too late for that. I doubt there's much of a community for it anymore.

Campaign is really fun the story is a bit disjointed and underwhelming.

Multiplayer is okay and was a worthy experiment in my opinion. As much as that part of the game is derided I'm glad Epic experimented with the formula so that TC could know what worked and what didn't, because imagine if Judgement had never existed and TC decided to get experimental. It wouldn't have been pretty.

Never completed the campaign because it seemed like a glorified Horde mode but I thought Overrun mode in multiplayer was actually very fun. I know it's not what the hardcore Gears heads want from the franchise though

Gears of War 2 has the best campaign in my opinion. Descending into the depths of The Hollow, wrecking grubs while riding a Brumak and chainsawing my way out of a giant work can't be topped if you ask me.

Definitely a highlight for me as someone who has "binge-played" through the campaigns in the past few months. Was my favourite of the 3 and the most memorable as well.

Also I forgot to add earlier that if anybody wants to join in along the way I'm in the GearsGAF club, so if you see me online feel free to hit me up.

It's not bad, but it also doesn't prove to be anything more than the side-story money grab it sounded like from the beginning.

I played it a bit right after replaying Resident Evil 4. I think the juxtaposition really hurt it. It felt like the most beige, generic shooter ever.

Not bad, just beige.

No.

It's different from the others, but I enjoyed it just as much. I really wouldn't mind a Judgment 2 of some sort. I liked the control scheme better than the other games.

No .. its actually not that bad. I guess the reason people didn't like it was it was just too much of the same .. Gears Saturation by the point it came out.

The game has it's ups and downs, for starters its the most colorful Gears game, which sounds like an odd thing to say but then you go back and all 3 Gears have very muted color palettes. Baird is GOD AWFUL though.

You must have never played 3.

Purely from a level design standpoint, it's actually great. I'd place it second only to Gears 2 in that regard.

Unless you're more into the more organic, set piece-driven environments of Gears 3, that is. Judgment gets back to the very video gamey and "level" like... well.. levels, of Gears 2.

What I didn't appreciate about Judgment were the sprinkled "horde mode" sections in the campaign, which kinda just felt like padding in a game that otherwise had a really good flow to it. I think your mileage will vary there depending on how much you enjoy the Gears 3, tower defensy aspects of the latter day horde modes. I- uh... I don't at all.

Also, some of the remapped controls make no sense. You now switch weapons on Y instead of the dpad, in some bizarre display of People Can Fly not understanding that you want to be able to roadie run with A while you switch weapons, I guess? No idea what's up with that. There's an even more awkward control setup you can choose in options, where you dive/roll on A, roadie run on X, and that way end up closer to Y for thumb-tilting weapon-switching action. It's just not very elegant at all, and ultimately a pretty pointless change, seemingly just for the sake of shaking things up.

But I wanna reiterate that the levels are *great*. There's not quite the contra-esque boss battles and level transformations of 2, but in terms of cover surfing and flanking and inventive use of co-op vantage points and situations where you bail eachother out in harrowing ways, it's very good.

It is horrible. It is a series of challenge rooms with generally nothing else worthy of note.

Its the same category as God of War Ascension. Unnecessary, undercooked, and easily skippable.

If you want to play Gears of War, 3 is your answer

Campaign was better than the horrible Gears 3 at least

Yeah, 3 really is a total bummer. It's like they made every area three times wider than they had to, just to accommodate four players. In reality they just spread the level design so thin that you were barely playing Gears any more.

Me and a friend just replayed all of them, and it's such a noticeable drop in interesting encounters. It has great variety in terms of theme and looks, though, but that's a small comfort.

After hearing how bad it was... I decided to stay away from it..

However I just did marathon catching up to 4 and decided to finally play Judgement..

It is certainly not as bad people say.. it does has its own charm and it's rather unique with its challenges throughout the game...

I got to say it is the most impressive visual game out of pack. Every stage feels different and there's always tons of stuff happening in the background ..
The music was also quite engaging and it fitted perfectly with the scenery..

I am actually looking towards 4 more after playing Judgment..

I love gears multiplayer (played all of them, 3 the most). I quite liked judgement multiplayer, it was different but I still enjoyed it for what it was.

Gears of War 2 has the best campaign in my opinion. Descending into the depths of The Hollow, wrecking grubs while riding a Brumak and chainsawing my way out of a giant work can't be topped if you ask me.
Did you like that whole act of filler and the lack luster final act?

I've already played 3 though.

Also I kind of liked Ascension. But I do agree it is skippable.

The mechanics are really good and gameplay feels nice but there are no big set peices or interesting scenarious for combat. They literally made it horde mode, with a story.

This. Bit its actually one of the better Gears. I like pressing the Y button to switch guns.

Yep. Gears 2 still has best campaign.

I get Gears Judgement feels from everything I've seen of Gears 4.

The tail end of the game isn't as strong as the preceding chapters, I'll give you that.

However, it certainly didn't end on a whimper either.

I can understand why some don't like it though.

The game was the last big exclusive on the 360 and really pushed that console to it's limits. It's a a very good looking game. What tanked it was that it wasn't a mainline Gears title and PCF made some strange choices gameplay wise.

Oh, and it's a minor detail, but the writing isn't completely brain grinding garbage either. Each "witty remark" and put-down in Gears 1-3 are so badly written and acted out in such a stilted, obnoxious way, it's like having someone throw bricks at your head. Judgment is far less exhausting in that regard. So that is also a plus. :)

Campaign-wise, it's actually among the better Gears. Multiplayer though, it wasn't that great. The lack of Horde mode really hurt it for example.
My take too.

The main story elements of Gears were resolved in 1, 2 and 3. Judgment is a side story that focuses on combat, combat, co-op and combat, and with classic Locus instead of lambent enemies.

If you love Gears combat vs. Locust I don't see how you couldn't love Judgment. If you're looking for classic Gears multiplayer or a continuation of the story you'd be disappointed, though you do get a little slice of Gears 3 campaign too.

Its also the best looking of the bunch.

Played it with a friend recently. And we had a great time. The Declassified mechanic is really well implemented and fun.
