Is GTA a thing over in Japan?

"It's not out" doesn't answer if the prior games sold well. He asked about GTA, not GTA V.

IIRC, GTA 3 did around 300,000 units, but I could be very wrong. Not sure about the other titles though.

For what it's worth, Vice City did pop up in this Top 100 Games Famitsu list back in 2006.

It's definitely a thing here in Japan. Last week when I got my import us copy, I showed it off to some of my Japanese friends and such and their eyes lit up with excitement. They were also surprised I had it since the Japanese version comes out in a few weeks. But yeah many people like it here and it does well sales wise I've heard.

I replayed through a good portion of San Andreas with Touhou models. It was hilarious.
I don't pay super close attention to Japanese sales charts, but my understanding is that they're always solid sellers over there, doing 100k+ with each console release, which as is the case overseas, is a respectable number for a non-native title. I know that somebody already uploaded translated instructions for basics on how to play the game for people who imported it without knowing much English and I've definitely seen people streaming it over on NicoNico. It's definitely a known and well-liked entity amongst people over there, even if the CERO classifications limit how the game can be marketed and presented in stores.

Yeah, San Andreas has a bunch of japanese mods. I remember waching a Miku mod.

Oh it's a thing. I'm friends with Harada because when I met him back when I was working at Rockstar he wanted me to take a picture with him, and he tweeted it out in an excited manner.

There are plenty of billboards around Tokyo advertising for GTA V. I have seen a few in Shibuya and Shinjuku on my way home from work. There are probably a lot more in Akihabara but I hardly ever visit that side of the city. The same billboards will be used for the next Call of Duty or Assassin's creed in a few weeks.

I used to do Japanese localisation at the Lincoln studio. As far as I know it's still going strong and Rockstar games in general are most definitely a "thing" in Japan. Their publishing/marketing out in Asian territories is done through the subsidiary in Singapore, which is a pretty big operation from what I gather.

Wow western games do like shit in Japan.
You have to realize that the console market in general isn't nearly as big in Japan as it is in the west these days. Even really big Japanese games rarely sell a million copies.

Well Grand Theft Auto is all built around driving and Yakuza has no driving whatsoever, so... no?
Wasn't Capcom handling the ditribution of the GTA games in Japan at some point? I remember reading about it back at the time when San Andreas released.

Very strong opening week for a Western title in Japan. Capcom no doubt helped.

Didn't see any.
But I suddenly bumped into a Monster Hunter shop down under Tokyo Station. I would imagine that it would have been like heaven for any fan.
It's not really that big compared to Call of Duty. I work on a game company and this last two months I kept talking about how GTA was going to be released soon and we all should play together, and some friends were even like "what's GTA?"...
Not all, of course, but some guys absolutely didn't know what game was I talking about. Or maybe it's just those guys are complete oblivious to what's selling in the game industry right now, lol
Anyway, tomorrow I'm going back to work after two weeks vacation (big trip!) and I'm bringing GTA with me. Wonder what they'll think
