Is GTA a thing over in Japan?

Where did you import from? How did you get it so fast? I'm still waiting on mine...

I got it from an internet store called hexagonny. I got it last Thursday from them. Probably would've gotten it on Wednesday had I chosen cash on delivery like I usually do, but I chose to pay at my local conbini instead this time. I highly recommend them. Prices are a little high but thats to be expected for importing games into Japan. But I've used them many times, especially for preordered games and I've gotten them all almost on release date in the or a day or two after.

Wasn't Capcom handling the ditribution of the GTA games in Japan at some point? I remember reading about it back at the time when San Andreas released.

Yeah, they did up to IV I think. Then for some titles (including the PC version of IV) it was Cyberfront. Now I believe it's Capcom again for V.

I know a guy who's based in Singapore with them, I guess as part of R* International. Afaik All their major titles swing by there before hitting Japan.

They had a big tent/booth thing at TGS this year dedicated to GTAV. The queue for hands-on with the game was at least 2 hours long when I passed by... there were people sporting cool Los Santos t-shirts as well (which they got from playing at the booth). I'm hoping this one will do well here. Some of the humour might be lost along the way, but in terms of scope and pure fun gameplay/variety of stuff to do, I'm sure they'll appreciate it over here.

NYC, baby.

Rock on, brother.

I'm getting this sort of feeling that there are people wondering "how come the Japanese aren't loving the games we love as much as we do?" or "do they love the games we love as much as we do? because they should".

If that's not the case, I apologize.

I just don't think just because any of us; regardless of culture, should expect the person next to us to like what we like and if so, try to force it or question them about it.

Make a list of games with both those elements that sold over 200k.

I'll start it off with a big one!

It's been very popular in Japan for a long time now, since GTA3. Probably more so than any other Western-created property since Crash Bandicoot.

One interesting footnote is that GTAV has been ahead of either SKU of Pokemon on Amazon Japan for about a week now. Obviously Pokemon will have much stronger sales but it's still impressive.

Not really.

You dont see it advertised in Yodobashi (well, yes but in the xbox section), Bic Camera or Akiba... MH4 is taking it all.

And is not out yet.

I haven't seen it advertised anywhere in person yet. I saw a sort of advertisement on Amazon I guess?

GTA sales vs Yakuza sales.

GO!

Globally? Yakuza is like a blip on a radar compared to GTA. Yakuza does real well in Japan but even then, 'real well' on consoles in Japan isn't 'real well' for most US console games outside of Nintendo products(which, I do believe, do better in NA than in Japan for most purposes)

People who like western console sandbox games are going to pass up effing GRANDTHEFTAUTO V for another Pokemon game?

First Pokemon in 3d. First Pokemon releasing globally. I don't know. I love GTA, but I'm pretty hyped for Pokemon too.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City , Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto IV were number 1 in Japan in their debut weeks. Grand Theft Auto III debuted at number two in 2003.
