Is it just me or is Google Chrome getting worse?

I'm in the beta channel, and I am not having nearly the memory usage that you guys are reporting. As i mentioned above there is also a preloader, so when I click on the application it loads instantly...

...it leads me to believe that the beta is privy to a coming public update that will fix a lot of its problems.

I have 16 gigs of ram, currently 10.8 is in use. Check out how Firefox, which I have 30+ tabs open in takes 700-something mb, while Chrome just takes and takes. That top one, 900mb+ is the shockwave flash extension.

Edit: yes, I have 156 tabs in Chrome.

Jeez, man. 156? Did you do some sort of test? And is that ad blocker on gaf? And 16gbs is intense, bro.

Sometimes when I close Chrome and log in the next day, all my extensions won't load. The only way to fix it is the manually terminate Chrome.exe in the task manager and restart

No idea what's causing it. Very frustrating though

I generally like Chrome, but yeah, if I leave it running for too long with a decent number of tabs and windows open it will use so damn much memory that it basically slows my entire laptop to a crawl until I close some crap.

Sometimes Chrome has this weird "Oops" error, but other browser can load the pages just fine. Oh and the gifs are starting to get worse.

Ah shit, I thought I'd turned it off for GAF. I used to use Firefox for everything. Just fixed that, GAF ads come unto me! Yeah, my tabs have gotten a little out of control lately, most of them are GAF threads that are interesting but I haven't made the time to read yet. Edit: Updated my original post with new pic to show mods I've reformed.

Actually, while Chrome uses a good amount of ram, I just caught a problem that I thought was Chrome's fault, but was actually Nvidia's streamer service, nvstreamsvc.exe. That service went crazy, gobbling up all my ram to 99%, threatening to crash my computer. Usually this happens when I walk away, and I come back to a restarting computer and wonder what the hell happened. Not this time.

It's a driver for Nvidia's SHIELD streaming service, which comes with the Geforce Experience (which I have installed for Shadowplay). It has a memory leak. Just a heads-up for others with gaming computers, you may want to go to services.msc and disable that driver if you don't own Nvidia's handheld streaming device.

Good lord, thanks for making this thread.

Since a couple of weeks Chrome has been completely messing up my "8 most used pages" shortcut when you open a new tab. It used to be the same 8 websites all the time, because well I use those the most. But now it randomly removes websites, replaces them with others, randomly switches up places. It's all over the place and it's driving me insane.

If I open a new tab now, both Neogaf and Twitch are gone and replaced with some news site I occasionally visit and a weather stat tracking site I check maybe once a day. If I open a new tab in let's say 15 minutes, everything has changed again. What the hell is this nonsense? Why can't I customize this myself anyway?

Chrome is a pain. If you want to ease things for the better, turn of the extensions you have. Those things take up so much memory.

It does take up a lot of resources but that has never been a problem. The problem would have been if it didn't release the resources when other programs on your computer need them. And that hasn't happened for me with Chrome. It is as snappy and responsive for me as when it first released.

(Except on certain Canary builds but Canary hasn't ever guaranteed problem-free behaviour).

I think I'll give Firefox a try again and see how it compares. I like Chrome's integration with everything I use though, I suppose Firefox will have similar functionality, not used it in years.

I gave up on it last year when it was being shit with Flash and some other things, I went back to Firefox and have been happy.

I was starting to like it, but about an hour ago it started to freeze whenever I try to type something into address bar, right-click anywhere, or open the settings. I seriously have no idea what happened.

Since Mavericks Safari has been much better its my main browser now. Still can't get an adblock to work on youtube properly though grr

I tried using Chrome a couple of weeks ago after a friend kept insisting it was superior to Firefox. I've tried it off and on since then but never have I thought about switching to it on a permanent basis. It's a resource hog and moves a lot slower than other browsers. My friend claims the opposite, but eh. I'll stick with what works best for me.

I remember looking at my task manager one day wonder how the hell my memory was being eaten away when I had only two or three tabs open and a music player. I consider leaving chrome but at the same time I don't think I could get used to anything else.

All browsers in general seemed to have turned to garbage. Firefox also routinely balloons up to 1GB+ even if I don't have much open.

It can get real bad, but on the whole I don't have a lot of issues anymore. It used to be a lot worse.

I tried switching to Waterfox a while back, but I just prefer Chrome a lot more.

No problems here on Chrome Stable. It has been great on all of my machines. Faster than any other browser out there, and it comes stock with some killer features (PDF reader, built-in flash, sync... etc.). I also feel that is has the best extension selection. Firefox add-on development seems to have stagnated since Chrome came around.

Edit: yes, I have 156 (now 160) tabs in Chrome.

Amateur. I had to download Session Manager add-ons to save huge groups of tabs, because I couldn't sort through them fast enough.

But that pic does a great job of demonstrating how Chrome utterly fails to display tabs gracefully as you add more. I think by about 30-50 you already have nothing but tiny shards, with no titles, and it's a trick just to click on the tab without hitting the X button, sometimes.

Firefox just makes the tab list scrollable, and it works much, much better.

Runs like ass on my Macbook pro.

The pc runs hotter, uses more resources, it's sluggish as fuck and yes i have done all the things to make it run properly.

I'm using safari now. Much smoother experience

Safari 7 is a bliss, buttery smooth scrolling and blazing fast performance. It has been my favorite browser since it was released with Mavericks.

I recommend you this: Youtube 5, the best Youtube player I had the pleasure to use.

I don't use it at home any more - I've been sticking with IE11 and it's been fine. I get none of the slowdown or memory issues that I do with Chrome, to say nothing of gifs.

I still use Chrome at work, though, because we're stuck with XP and IE6 or something equally awful. I still get pages that freeze occasionally but it's still an improvement.

It used to be the case for me that on OSX, Chrome would crash constantly. So I turned my back on it. A few months after, I tried it again and found it to be exponentially faster than Firefox, slimmer, cleaner, with more functionality.

I sometimes go back to Firefox and wonder why anyone uses it. It's slower, takes longer to load, uses up more RAM, has issues downloading large files, and even with little to no extensions, is outperformed massively by Chrome.

The only issue I have with Chrome is when viewing threads on GAF like the High-Res PC Screenshot thread, after a few pages of continuous high-res PNGs, Chrome borks. However, I think that's more to do with my 2008 iMac which needs replacing ASAP.

The wife's PC experiences full-on system freezes when using Chrome. She can play games or use other apps for hours at a time with no trouble, but within 10 minutes of firing up Chrome the machine grinds to a halt. No debug info, nothing in system or app events. No other problems and it's a fresh Win7 Pro install on an SSD.

On my work Mac, the thing disappears from time to time, and beachballs at random. It's also nuked my bookmarks twice.

Fuck Chrome.

I use Firefox on my works laptop. Pain in the arse, hangs on me so I have to close it and why I try to reopen, gives me an error saying there is already a Firefox open or something, have to reboot the laptop

Yea it's just you. I have two tabs open and it's only using 33mb. That's it. I can say I've never had a problem with chrome being sluggish or anything.

Safari is the best OS X browser. Wish I could say the same for Windows, though...
Even Apple couldn't stand keeping Safari in line on Windows that they discontinued it. Shame because if they could get version 7 working well enough on Windows it would be great. But no one would switch to it anyway. It would still be great for people with iOS devices that use Windows just for the iCloud syncing, but Apple decided they're instead going to just release extensions for other browsers to do the iCloud tab syncing instead.

Firefox is terrible in comparison to Safari at least on OS X. It chokes to death with a large amount of tabs, mainly because it still doesn't have separate processes for all tabs and extensions like Chrome and Safari. Scrolling is terrible on my Retina. And there's no iOS version like Chrome has. I keep it around solely for porn. Mainly because it's the only browser that has the DownloadHelper extension.

Chrome however, I deleted it from all my devices a few weeks after switching to Safari when I realized I wasn't going back. The experience was just lightyears better since Mavericks compared to the Chrome I was experiencing prior. And believe me, I tested every single branch of Chrome. Beta, Dev, Canary, all of them were the same.

Safari 7 shows Apple's serious about Safari again. I look forward to the future. And probably Safari 8 in OS X 10.10. But if there's one change I'd make, it's that I'd remove the never used Shared Links sidebar tab and replace it with the iCloud tabs list instead. I'd rather have that there than in the toolbar. Also, its tab session transferring isn't as good as Chrome. On Chrome it would transfer a tabs entire history when you opened a cloud tab. But Safari seems to completely forget a tabs entire history and only transfers the current page. Even when you reopen a closed tab...

Also, the "Reopen closed tab" key combo is Command+Z for some ungodly reason. It should be Command+Shift+T like every other browser. Command+Z conflicts with Undo so if I close a tab and then type text, I can no longer reopen that tab. Chrome and Firefox have this command separate and I can reopen up to the last 10 tabs or so with one key combo. I hope 8.0 fixes this. Or even 7.1.

Also extensions are lacking in Safari, but I've been able to find all the ones I need. And have dropped ones I would have used before. I should read up on making my own extensions. I used to dabble in my own extensions in Chrome.

And lastly the NTP is great, but I hate that it shows thumbnails, especially since it doesn't log you in first so sites with login pages will look stupid. I'd much rather have the ability to use my own thumbnails or just show the sites logo icon instead. It would look much more recognizable than most of the screenshots. Especially on web apps like the Plex Media Server and Transmission which look terrible.

They're the only changes I'd make to Safari.

Bottom line is even with those flaws, Safari is still so much better than both Chrome and Firefox on OS X. And I used to be a huge Google Chrome fanboy. Now the only Chrome in my house is the Cr-48 they sent me 3 years ago that I never use.

First, disable the built-in flash player called something like "pepper flash" if you still have it. (Go to chrome://plugins and look over them to see if you can see it.) I don't have it on my list anymore, so the newer versions of Chrome might have gotten rid of it. But check and make sure you either don't have it, or if you do, it's disabled. It's possible it's hidden behind an expandable listing; check for those.

Second (and this is what ultimately fixed everything for me), see if you have the Google Dictionary extension installed. If you do, it has a severe memory leak that made webpages keep using more and more memory. Uninstall it. This solved my problem.

Third, if you don't have Google Dictionary installed, or if you still have a problem, use Chrome's built-in task manager (Shift+Esc) to try and isolate the problem. I'd recommend uninstalling (not just disabling) each extension one at a time, browsing for a while after each one to see if the memory usage still builds up.

As an aside, Gmail still uses more memory than most other tabs, and I haven't found a solution to that. But at 134M, it's still not terrible, and it doesn't end up slowing my system at all. (8GB laptop).

Good luck.

Chrome went to shit a while back and I've now replaced it with a combination of Firefox and IE. I will say that Chrome + bing search is amazing for porn, especially now that they added tab indicators for sound...

I just wish iCloud Tabs would sync in a more timely manner. I'm always checking my rMBP/iPhone 5 before leaving the house just to make sure each is in-sync. I'd rather have them guaranteed to work, leaving me at peace of mind.

My current issue with Chrome is that the status bar at the bottom that shows the target of a link when hover over one just randomly stops working. I have to restart the browser for them to show up again. It's a real pain in the ass when you want to be careful about where you're browsing to.

Yeah. That's one thing I hate. It seems to be on a timer, but it takes way too long between checks and submits. Sometimes upwards of a whole minute or more. I use iCloud tabs for transferring tabs from my MacBook to my Mac mini and have to wait a lot.

Not sure what their timers are set for, but it needs to be smart enough and always submit when a new tab is opened or page is changed, and on the other end always check immediately when the button pop down list is clicked.

I mean I use Tab syncing a lot. When I was on Chrome and now on Safari. It's like the most important feature and if Safari didn't have it, I wouldn't even have considered it a candidate. (Firefox's syncing feature is shitty. I tried setting it up at one point but it wouldn't work and required some stupid hoops to be jumped through. WTF, Mozilla? You're doing it so wrong. Porn browser for life.)

New Tab page sucks. I now use MetroTab but it has a bunch of queer little glitches, such as taking out the ":" from many of my links.

Thinking about migrating my stuff to FireFox but I wonder if Firefox can take advantage of my Google account and share information like 'last searched locations' and whatnot (Since it comes in handy on my Android phone)
