Is it OK to photograph your food?

It's cool if you're using the pics to show your skills as a cook or showing exotic dishes (like the godly Iron-cook GAF thread). You like to show everyone your scrambled eggs via facebook? Fuck off.

All the good food pictures are tricked to hell anyway, like hairspray on burgers so they look shiny and that shit.

This girl has become a small celebrity in Norway because of her breakfast photos. But her photos are pretty cool:

She must spend a fortune on ingredients, though.

I guess if it's something really different or fancy then I don't mind.

But people take pictures of every dish and and fill my Facebook with banality.

Like brother just above me. Dude, it's a nice looking rib-eye and asparagus but, you know, it's fucking steak and vegetables. We've all seen steak and vegetables.

Less is always more in these cases.
Without context I hear where you're coming from...if anything the rib-eye pic happens to be from Fleming's Steakhouse (kinda fancy, I guess).

If I was in a 5 Star restaurant and saw idiots taking cell phone pics of their food i would be pissed. it looks stupid, it's distracting to the other people in the restaurant, it cheapens the atmosphere. everyone isn't entitled to do whatever they want at all times.

God forbid somebody wants to share with their friends.
Nothing wrong with sharing with your friends. I'm not talking about that.

I'm referring to the people who feel compelled to broadcast absolutely everything about their lives - no matter how mundane - while constantly talking about how awesome they are.

Block them. I do.

I take pics and then tell pals to get that dish from that restaurant.

At least this is informative. Most people who take pics of food think they're some kind of food photography artists, and post it without a word of wtf it is or why I should care.

"Lol TGIF!"

"OMG SO STOKED FOR THE HUNGER GAMES!"

"GREAT time hanging out with friends last night!" (proceeds to tag about 38 people).

Those folks get the block.

Who cares? I may find it annoying from time to time when people take pics of their food, but what's even more annoying is someone else trying to tell me what I can or can't do with my meal.

I don't think so. That might be just your projection on things. But i agree that posting images without a single word of text is annoying.

I don't know anybody who take pics of what they eat.
And I don't really care if people do. I mean, they're not bothering you. Let them take pictures of their pizzas if they want.

The same reason people in the movie theater use their phones during a movie or when you're at a concert and everyone in front raises their phones to take pictures. In other words, it's very distracting from the main experience.
Come the fuck on. :lol

No wonder... nothing in McDonalds ever looks as good in realife as on the photos on the banners above the tills.

Im sure the same applies to many menus, in other dinners and restaurants.

Most people go through their daily lives looking for things to be offended by. Oftentimes it's things that really don't affect them at all. It scratches that itch we all have to feel we're above something all the time.

Getting upset about a facebook post that doesn't interest you because "pfff I've seen steak and vegetables before"? Really? I bet that just ruined your whole day didn't it.

Or the guy who says people taking pictures "cheapens the atmosphere" of a 5-star restaurant. Get over yourself. It doesn't affect you. You're looking to get upset. Are you there to enjoy good food or to feel like you're part of some elite club for people who are too cool for that sort of thing?

I take pics and then tell pals to get that dish from that restaurant.

Basically this. I like when my friends do this, and I try to do the same.

YOU MONSTER!

I mean I can get if it's a super intimate restaurant, where the lighting is dim, and unless you have a good camera that works well in low light, having someone with their flash going on and off a few times in the course of a meal can be annoying.

I've never done it myself, but if I were ever to cook something awesome or I'm at someplace eating something weird that I've never had before, I might do it, but I really don't understand when people post their McDonalds meal or their Starbucks crapuccino on Facebook, I mean what's so special about that?

As long as you're doing it discreetly and not asking people to move so that you can get the framing just right, who gives a shit?

Everything that people complain about is stupid.

Food picture taking has been pretty common in a lot of Asian countries since I could remember. It's been a public topic in the US only very recently.

Depending on your behavior, it even helps you watch your diet. It could be discouraging to some to include something nasty in their album.

I'm going to start photographing the meals of the diners sitting next to me at various restaurants. That's the next logical step.

I'm not sure why restaurants would ban people. It could be idiots blasting their flash. But if they're ashamed of their food as an image and don't like free publicity, I would not eat there. If. Not sure if they would admit that reason.

It's strange. The last thing I'm thinking after preparing a meal is to design in on the plate, admire it, then take a picture. What ever happened to people just being hungry and eating something.

When done in a restaurant it's a flat out faux pas, like wearing a cap or puffy-ass sports jacket in the dining room. If you don't have a problem with looking like that then by all means proceed.

What if said person was a food critic?

Or worked for a food blog/website?

If they were a food critic they wouldn't need to take a picture because they are paid to describe food with words. If they were the last thing then I would wonder what went wrong in their life.

I don't think photographing your food should be outlawed or anything. But I'd never do it, and it generally gets at least a mental eye-roll from me.

If it looks nice I'll take a picture. It takes like 2 seconds. Let me document the beauty of food please. I don't mind seeing other people's food either as long as the pictures aren't blurry. Fatness first!
