Is it smart to release Mario and Smash close together?

thats the thing! Mario is predicted to be launched mid november, smash at the beginning of december. 2-3 weeks really enough time for gamers to get tired of mario and feel the need for a new game?
I'm almost positive I beat Mario Sunshine in less than two weeks, so yeah, sure. (For that matter, I probably also beat Mario 64 in less than three, despite 3D being basically new ground at the time.) I doubt most people played Sunshine much after beating it, since it didn't really have the open-ended feel of Mario 64. We'll see how Galaxy goes.

i cant help looking at it this way: what other company would let the 2 biggest titles of its existance (and yes, mario and smash could be the biggest games for the rest of wii's lifespan) within such a short period in time?

Does anyone believe that there was any way in hell Microsoft would have allowed halo 3 and GTA4 release in the same month? (ignoring the announced delay obviously)

I think the December 8th date is more about being ready for the Christmas rush. It gives people ~2.5 weeks to find a Wii and SSB:B before the 25th. You don't want to release a game in the Christmas season on the 15th or 20th, you run the risk of people already having gifts purchased or selling out and not being able to restock in time.

Holy shit. Seriously.

You forgot NiGHTS, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, New Blood, Dewy's Adventure and Geometry Wars.

OK, I'll stop pretending that Sega's still capable of making a good game and that anyone cares about Dewy. Still!

3rd, actually.

The same date Melee shipped all those years ago.

a plan.

and, you know, it's not as if those games appeal to entirely the same group of people. take me and my friends, for example. we loved us some mario kart 64. didn't really care for mario anything else. i'm sure ssb and smg are sort of the same way. and, if my recollection is correct, according to npd, ssbm sold something like 13 trillion copies or some such number, and sunshine only pulled two or three dozen. whatever the actual numbers, ssbm was considerably higher, so it certainly sold to different people.

i think this release schedule is fine.

The gap between Sunshine and SSBM was like 1-2 million. It's not that SSBM sold an absurd amount, but what was noteworthy was that this was the first time ever a non-Mario platformer was the best selling title on a Nintendo platform (erm...gameboy aside, I guess).

Looking at it from a competitive business standpoint, yes. The 360 has some serious heavy hitters coming out and you have to have something to combat that.

My god. That.. that's just a beautiful lineup. *sheds a tear*

And that doesn't even count the DS games I still have to buy this year. :o

As for the OP's question, I actually had similar fears, but roughly one month of leeway would be enough to not really cause any significant damage to either game.

Wii's lineup is so strong this year. It's baffling how fearful people are of the casual market when there's next to nothing coming out that isn't made for the Nintendo faithful. You can own only a Nintendo home console and for once you won't feel like you're not getting enough releases.

they'll push one back. this is Nintendo here.. they're notorious for staggering and delaying... besides.. I have a feeling that after Galaxy and Smash Bros come out, Nintendo will have blown their Wii first party load and will start working on shit for their next console. They're shitty like that. woot.

I can't remember the last time Nintendo gave something a date and didn't stick to it. Metroid got that week added to it but the recent Nintendo don't seem to even talk about releases dates until they're 100% they'll hit them.

Btw..

Um, yes? They should release Smash sooner if they can, but it's Nintendo so they won't.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Both games have had only about 2 years of development time. I'll gladly take more delays if it means a better final product.

I think bellyaching will largely cease if Nintendo ever gets around to announcing more 08 games besides Mario Kart and Wii Fit.

You say this as if you thought people would play anything other than Brawl.

Nintendo barely announce anything any more. Stuff just shows up on shelves.

Smash Bros and Galaxy are two titles that will sell amazingly well throughout the life cycle of the console. They will have serious legs. They need to release them sooner rather than later so they get the absolute maximum amount of Christmas seasons possible.

Also, nobody is thinking "Hmmm... should I get Galaxy or should I get Brawl". They're thinking "MUST HAVE MARIO AND SMASH BROS OMG THIS HOLIDAY IS ORGASM."

Lol no. Try again

This is Nintendo -- the "top rung" first party games keep selling for ages and ages. Releasing both so close to each other won't have a significant negative impact on their sales.

Bellyaching will never cease

tell a n64 or gamecube owner back in the day that he'll get a Fire Emblem, Smash Bros, Mario and Metroid game in the span of 3 months and his head would have exploded.

Gamers are whiners for life.
