Is it worth starting up Lost again?

Stop being so blind that you're severely overrating a mediocre show.

Lost suffers from the same problems that plagued BSG, which was a creative team that got so wound up in their own shit and self deluded brilliance that they couldn't see that the ship sank seasons ago.

BSG > you, and anything you will ever do or achieve! >:(

You know a show is good when so many people hate it from the bottom of their hearts. That means it went from 'fucking amazing' to 'ok' at one point and got people buthurt enough to rage over it.

Without all the hype, drama, expectation, backlash etc, Lost in its entirety is still a good show, period.

You won't even admit that it's good. That it's merely mediocre...

I can taste your bitterness

I'm in the "Watch it, it's great!" camp. I watched the show every week for the six years it was on and enjoyed it immensely. Then last year my girlfriend, who had never seen a single episode, decided she wanted to watch it on Netflix. I watched it all with her and on a second viewing I enjoyed it even more. Without long breaks and months between seasons, it was actually more cohesive than I remembered, and seeing it in rapid-fire succession showed the story arc more fully.

It's true that you don't get every answer in the end, but they do fill in the gaps for the most part and you get some very satisfying moments for characters that you really come to love over the length of the show. My GF was in tears at the end and loved every minute of it as well.

There's a reason why it dropped from 18 million viewers to 11 million in two seasons.

Yes and there is a reason why it moved from debuting in the fall to starting in January. The constant breaks and long layoffs hurt the show in the first few seasons and many fans dropped out because of it. At least many stopped watching on it's normal air time. During it's run Lost was the most DVR'ed show on television, which didn't show up in the rating, and probably still doesn't. Rating got more consistent when the season was aired straight though starting in January.

Well, it's not...

I don't get the hate on most of the seasons. Only the last season actually scuked to me. Before that I still loved it. I also still loved the last episode.

Too much sci fi for people.

Also, I'm pretty sure that have been many great shows where ratings dropped as the ending approached.
That drop happened from season 3 to season 5.

Season 1 was the height of the show, it was the only season that grew an audience. Every subsequent season saw audience fall.

Season 2 started off with 24 million and season 3 ended with 14 million.

In stark retrospect, the Walking Dead premiered in season 1 with over 5 million viewers and ended the season with just under 6 million. Season 2 started with even more eyes at over 7 million and ended the season at 9.

The final episode of Lost was one of the most criminal pieces of writing I have ever seen. It create a catharsis out of nothing and made you feel good without ever earning the right to do so. After that initial wave of emotion has washed away, you start thinking, "What the fuck? What about these seven hundred plotlines!?" If they had lifted St. Elsewhere's ending verbatim, it would've been a more satisfying conclusion.

Lost has some really good individual episodes and in my opinion, the journey is fun for a while if you don't expect a satisfying ending (it's rare for mystery shows to have that kind of thing, but if you want one, try Carnivale). However, I don't think it is worth 7 seasons of your time. If one is halfway through, it's worth finishing just to watch the trainwreck it becomes and to lose any trust you ever had in showrunners.

Absolutely. It's my favourite show. Just started watching the entire series again, up to Season 3 now. People's hatred for the ending is blown way, way out of proportion. Watch it for yourself, don't let people on the internet tell you whether you'll enjoy it or not, especially when it comes to a show like Lost with a very vocal minority of disgruntled fans.

I think its ratings tell a much different story.

Jumped the shark when they introduced the back half of the plane. Still a great show though. The light turning on in the hatch for the first time is one of my favorite moments in TV history.

I watched Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix last summer and stopped. Heard someone say stop after Season 2 then so I did. So far hearing here stop after Season 2, Season 3, Season 4, or watch the whole thing. Wondering if I should start watching again... (its free at least - Netflix streaming). I liked it so I remember it fairly well (not my favorite, but it was pretty good).

If you were enjoying what you watched, why wouldn't you continue on? It's not like Season 2 brings any kind of closure whatsoever. That's like reading the first third of a book, enjoying it, but not going any further because someone else said they didn't like it. I say continue on if you were enjoying what you watched. If it gets to the point that you're not enjoying it any longer, then pull the plug.

Also, I'd never tell someone to start a show like Lost and just watch the first two seasons. That is ridiculous, as watching two seasons of the show is just a complete waste of time. Either jump in with both feet and be prepared for the full ride, or don't start it at all.

just started watching it for the second time with my girlfriend last week - she's never seen it before, and we're almost done with season 1.

only problem is most of the surprises are already ruined for her since she read a bunch of bullshit online, so she expects nothing to be answered at all and it's already soiled the experience somewhat. It's a shame. It's still an incredible show despite not answering every. single. thing.

And miss the character development of
Desmond, Ben
? That alone is worth watching the following two seasons.

Or that one episode when you learn about
Richard. I don't remember the name of the episode, but I remember half of that episode was subtitled and it was very good
.

Definitely.

But if you can't really dig into the characters (dat Jack and Locke) by the end of S1, just drop it. The show will definitely not wrap up the mystery side satisfactorily for most.

Edit: Ehh, lets switch out that last word for "a lot of people."

Way ahead of you on those. I do need to watch Deadwood. I watch Mad Men on TV, but I prefer to buy DVD box sets or netflix entire series after they end.

Definitely just do that instead. LOST was fairly entertaining but there are many, many other shows out there that are more worth your time

I'll never forget Lost-GAF defending that abortion of a finale in the thread, oh man. The show had a shot at going out pretty damn well and they fucked it up all season. In fact there were maybe 3 good eps that season.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, just with BSG. I know the ending let people down, but I just gotta see what all the hype was about. I remember people were going crazy over this show when Season 3 started.

Do it, you can get er' done over a few rainy days or boring evenings. You won't regret it!

Just watch it. It has its issues, it doesn't wrap everything up as nicely as I would have liked, but I don't regret watching it at all. I'll be damned if it wasn't a fun ride.

The first half of season 3, where you stopped watching, is easily the lowest part of the series. It really picks up in the second half of season 3, and the shorter seasons after that mean far less filler.

I stopped watching after season 4, when it became clear to me that there weren't going to be any satisfying answers. From what I've heard about seasons 5 & 6, it seems that I was right. Thinking about the things in Lost that pissed me off, I just realized that the worst episodes of Lost (that I saw) and Angel both guest starred Bai Ling. Google shows that someone else already made that connection:

Why not read one of the millions of threads we've already had on this topic?

Watch the rest if you were attached to the characters, otherwise expect to be disappointed.

Absolutely not. What a waste of time. There are much better shows worth watching if you need a good show to watch - Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Six Feet Under, Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, etc.

Shows that offer nothing like the experience that Lost does.

I truly think that people who missed the boat on it won't really be able to get what it was like to watch the show with a new episode each and every week.

Agreed. When I did the re-watch with my GF last year she was always freaking out at the cliffhangers, and then we'd be on to the next episode a few minutes later. I told her she had no idea what it was like to watch it over the six years, waiting for a week (if we were lucky!) for a new show. The months between seasons were tough to take!
