Is it Wrong that I only Drink Whole Milk?

Why would it be "wrong" ? It just has more fat/calories/taste

I use unhomogenized whole milk in my protein shakes but fat free otherwise

Why?
Milk cause cancers now?

Maybe milk + sugar.

Basically cancer cells feed on glucose. They have tons of IGF-1 and insulin receptors. Milk increases IGF-1, but the body can easily deactivate IGF-1. However, a high sugar diet increases insulin, and insulin undoes the IGF-1 pacification. It creates conditions that favor cancer cell growth. It's why the ketogenic diet is used in cancer research now.

I grew up only drinking whole/4%. My girlfriend grew up on 1% so I can live with 1% or 2% but I don't drink much milk these days anyway -- it's mostly just used in cooking. I'd probably puke if I tried to drink skim.. it just looks so fucking gross.

I don't even know what half of you are talking about - 2%? Skin?

Here we have skimmed milk (vile, might as well be water), semi-skimmed (nice), whole milk (delicious)

What's funny is that the only studies that have linked (of course, "linked" means very little) milk to cancer used skim or low-fat milk.

Dairy fat is the repository of most of the good stuff in dairy.

I highly prefer 2% for straight drinking milk. I wouldn't dream of cooking anything with less than whole milk though unless I'm absolutely forced to.

Whole milk is gross after switching to 2% for a while. If you go back it's like drinking butter

Yeah, I had that reaction not too long ago. Roommate gave me a brownie and then gave me a glass of whole milk. I felt guilty about the milk.

Whole milk might well be better for you than reduced-fat milk (provided you manage total calories).

When I want to gain some weight, I do GOMAD (gallon of milk a day). Works like a charm.

Here's a study about how natives eating 63% of their calories as coconuts (saturated fat) had almost no heart disease:
http://www.ajcn.org/content/34/8/1552.long

And yet the extremely healthy Japanese and Native American (hundreds of years ago) populations love their rice and corn. I don't doubt the statistics in that study, but it makes more sense to me that people on such different diets probably don't have the same reaction to a diet that has a high ratio of carbs vs. fats vs. proteins.

It's not much different than 2% being 3 1/4%.

The fact that they don't use a percentage makes many people think it has much more fat than the others.

Well there may be a genetic adaptation, but saturated fat doesn't have a strong scientific backing regarding its negative health effects. I'd classify the evidence as 'conflicting'.

We might be looking at the wrong thing. It's possible that reducing processed foods and refined sugar, restricting calories to keep people from getting obese (as they don't have easy access to massive food), and having high activity levels (as in very high activity levels) would keep people healthier.

Yeah it's pretty debatable whether saturated, unsaturated, or trans fats are better or worse. And I don't want to get into that debate as I don't have a really limited knowledge of that chemistry.

Well there isn't much of a debate on trans fat. Outside of natural transfats (ie CLA), trans fat is VERY bad for you.

I grew up on skim milk and it's still the type of milk I use for cereal and making my protein shakes. I buy 1% or 2% for cooking and drinking, and of course chocolate milk!!!!!

I remember a story of when I went over to a friend's house when I was little. They had whole milk and I remember telling my friend "this is like sugar milk!!!!" :lol

There really isn't a debate on trans-fat. I don't think there's really any damning evidence against saturated. We have multiple native tribes documented eating very high levels of saturated fats with virtually no heart disease, cancer, diabetes. From the Eskimos & Inuits eating blubber to various pacific isle tribes getting half of their calories from saturated fat/coconuts. Also some tribes that live just off cow - milk/meat.

There is some debate on which polyunsaturated fats are worse, but it also has to do with susceptibility to rancidity, ratio between n-6 & n-3. We can't really say that n-6 is the bad fat, but just that the American diet has too much of it.

Rice and corn has nothing to do with this topic. If you're referring to my past arguments about carbohydrates, the reason why rice isn't as harmful as other grains is because it doesn't have lectins or phytic acid. Native Americans ate corn, but that isn't the same thing as 100 lbs of corn syrup consumed by each American every year.

Did not know that. My organic chemistry teacher was once explaining that just with regards to how easily they are metabolized, there is some debate as to whether a saturated fat is more stable than a trans fat because even though trans fats have the stronger double bond, their pi electrons can be donated for some reactions. Reading wiki says that there's some pretty serious concerns over it's ability to lower good cholesterols though.

i love full fat milk , but drinking any milk drys my body up so much.

after a refreshing pint of milk i will go all grogy.

i fail.

Not sure about chemical stability, but natural occurring CLA (found in full fat dairy from cows that eat grass, not corn) is some incredibly healthy stuff:

It was in the news a couple months ago I think, something like "dairy fat may reduce diabetes" on BBC.

I am a milk fanatic. I eat a lot of cereal and drink milk/chocolate milk in large quantities. However, I haven't had whole milk in awhile. I usually, by default, buy the skim or 1% or 2%. I have to get back into drinking whole milk again.

BTW, I drink Silk soy chocolate milk. I do this because it's solely for the chocolate, it has a nice supply of vitamin B and it won't give me heartburn at night. For everything else, it's milk.

wait whole milk is not supposed to be good for you? huh?

i drink whole milk all the time unless for making protein shakes which then i use 2% since it tends to mix easier. otherwise, whole milk all the way.

i wont die, right?

I usually get 2%, but now I'm gonna try soy. I need my protein, I am a growing boy.

Good thing too, because you'll have some nice fully-grown tits in no time!

I kid, I eat lots of soy stuff and have anti-boobs

try straight from the cow one day. Now THAT's milk.

My aunt is a fitness nut, and she does this. I think for it to be legal she has to basically own a time-share on a cow for her to be able to get the milk

1/2 a gallon a day right here. Whole milk is amazing.

You're kidding.

I never really drank whole milk until I lived in another country, and they don't have skim in that country. Just Whole and 2%. I would chug a little carton before class started at 9 to wash down these little pancake bites that were about 200 cals. It got your day going RIGHT, man. I love whole milk. It's pretty good for you, too. Nowadays I drink skim... it sucks. sigh

I did 4L/day for two months. Works for fitness weight gain purposes.

Buttermilk all the way. Truly refreshing.

I usually use whole milk when recipes call for "milk," but I can't really drink it. Having grown up on 2% it's just too much for me.
