Is Mega Man X the best Mega Man game?

I'm a huge fan of X1-X3 and MM2,3,9. I should really pick up that Zero collection.

Which Battle Network games are best? I had the original as a kid, and though I liked the battle system, it was terrible to navigate around.

Battle Network 3 is almost unanimously considered the best. Aside from that, BN2 and BN6 are good, BN5 is kind of love-it-or-hate-it, and BN4 is crappy.

If you're referring to the internet areas being tough to navigate, they overhauled it in BN2, adding themed areas and whatnot. Still heavily relies on memorization, though.

I won't bother linking it because it's probably already been posted in the thread, but I'm almost 100% certain that in Egoraptor's Sequelitis episode about Megaman, he was talking about Megaman X5 when bringing up the constant interrupting prompts.

On-topic, I'd say that X4 is my favorite MM game, followed by Battle Network 6, then MM9 or 10 (it's been a while since I've played them, so I don't remember much aside from liking them).

That never really gets better. I liked 3 the best (if I remember right). Wherever it was introduced that you got to play tetris with your stat boosts. I'm a sucker for systems like that (another reason RE4 is my favorite).

Thanks a bunch you guys! Really helpful ^_^

They are a pain to navigate though
Like really a big pain

Yeah that's all I remember about it having played the first game. I figured if I give it another try I'll go with the one considered the best one.

On topic: What do people like about X4? I never understood why it was liked, playing it on the X collection. Much better than X5 onwards, but it seemed like a step down.

I loved all the Mega Man/Mega Man X game so its difficult to choose one, but if I did I find myself going with X6. The Infinity Mijinion stage is something I can never forget.

Cool upgrades and playable Zero.

I'll always love Mega Man Legends/64, even with all of its flaws.

Plus X5 is the first game in the X series I played and it's hard for me to play the older ones, even though they're amazing. Just nostalgia, I guess.

Fantastic level design. The best armors in the series. First time being able to play as Zero, with his own storyline. Incredible visuals. One of the best Soundtracks in an action game. Dem cutscenes (Terrible voice acting, though).

Truly a masterpiece of a game.

I would have agreed with OP if I forget how much it sucked having to do chill penguin's stage to get the dash boots. Game feels off without dashing.

X4 is good but it's way too fucking easy. I'm not good in games but I still beat it with regular X without any powerups lately

The X games are not really that difficult in general. I do playthroughs of the original X with no armor (Except the boots), no Heart upgrades, no Sub-Tanks and Buster only all the time.

Kinda agree, but i don't think it's that much easier than X1.

The best Mega Man game is the first one you played. It's that way with Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and a lot of other franchises. Is it amazing? Yes. That's just my theory on favorites in franchises that don't really innovate much.

Idk. Megaman is one of those series that tries stuff in spinoff series. My first megaman was X1, but my favorite is megaman Zero.

Just adding, my first mario was the original mario, while my favorite was super mario world. First Zelda was A link to the past, but my favorite is wind waker. My first pokemon blue, but my favorite was crystal.

Might be true for a lot of people though :X

I pretty much like all Megaman Xs until X6, and from those, I'd put X and X4 both on first place, It's hard to choose which is better. No second place then, in third would be X5, then X6, then X2, last place for X3 (but still, it's in the group of the good ones).

I still dream with the day when Capcom will announce X9, in full 2D 1080P, with 95% less story and more of what was really relevant to make the games so good, quality gameplay and music.

X1 is so hard coded in my mind that I always begin every mega man game in the ice stage

LOL
Me too

I very much prefer Megaman Zero 2 and 3.

If that truly is a direct rip, they most certainly did. Shit, I better get me a copy of this :O

Judging from this gameplay footage (was difficult finding a youtube feed without shit quality sound or replaced by some obnoxious music) it seems that way. If that's really the same samples (because they sure don't sound like what you'd expect from an actual remaster) from the original, then it really drives home the point of what a huge fucking bottleneck the DAC in the GBA was for its true sound quality.

Mega Man X is the easiest of the Mega Man games. I count that by making it the first Mega Man I beat when I was 6 or 7 years old.

Yes it's the best.

You can argue all you want but MegaMan X did it first and it did it right. Newcomers and old fans both had the times of their life back in the SNES era.

Mega Man X2 is the best Mega Man game out there IMO. Goddamn, they took the dash mechanics and platforming to a whole new level. It is a much better game than X1.

My man. MM9 is legit one of my top games of last gen. I wish they would port it to newer systems (3DS, WiiU, vita in particular).
Me too I was really disappointed when I saw I only had the option to rent it for PS4. Isn't WiiU backwards compatible? How does that work for Wiiware titles?

Yeah, it works as advertised, and is probably the best way to play it right now IMO. The squishy face buttons and blurry visuals on the PS3 keep me from spending much time with that version.

X will always be the best Mega Man game in my book, mainly because it improved on the foundation that the classic games implemented. The new mechanics that it added to the it's own series, made it fun and added new dynamics to the gameplay. It doesn't feel easy or hard (at least to me it doesn't), and stays in a good area of difficulty.

I see that a lot of people think that X4 is the best, but I'd have to disagree. It is waaaaaay too easy, but that doesn't make it a bad game in any way. I still enjoy it immensely though.

X1 is a lot easier than X4 in my opinion.

I played X first when i was a kid, when i played some of the regular Megaman games i was really disappointed, he couldn't wall kick, he wasn't getting upgrades, the art style was a big downgrade, it just wasn't as good.

Megaman X is maybe the best SNES game not named Zelda imo.

Why no one like Megaman 8 ?

It is my favourite Megaman of all time.

I also like original series more than X because I like it simple.

Pretty much this, but it's worth noting that Battle Network 5 has a DS version available; this has some obvious advantages over the other games which were only availble on GBA in the US.

Megaman X, Megaman 2 (or 9, or Megaman & Bass), Megaman Zero 3 & Megaman Battle Network 3 are the big four of the Megaman franchise. I'll also give Legends 2 a nod here. It'd be up there with those 4 but I feel like it can't be judged alone and has to be played with Legends 1 because of how wildly different the two are.

The weird part though? Megaman X is a cohesive and masterful game with elements that are individually done better in the next three games. X2 had better boss fights, X3 had modular armor pieces, and X4 was just X1 on a greater scale with a different (better) visual style and a second campaign in Zero.
