Is Nas - Ether the best diss song ever?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Between the whole Nas and Jay-Z diss. Nas won. Why? Because New York City said so. And that the only place that matters in reagards to that beef. They were both seen as heirs to the throne of new york (after big and big l died) and jay-z attacked Nas trying to capture the the title (king of NY). Well, Nas responded and till this day when somebody gets destroyed people will always say the person got ethered.

Queens niggas run you niggas (brooklyn) ask russel simmons. Ask anybody from the NY, that line alone is the ultimate destroyment.

Sure Jay-Z is more succesful than Nas (so is eminem and kanye west) but that doesn't mean he is the better rapper. Hell, i'm in disagreement with most people that say Illmantic is Nas best album (it was written is in my opinion). I am (save a couple of songs) would be a classic on most other rappers catalogue.

And don't forget, Reasonable doubt bit off Raekwons only built for the cuban link. Lets not forget the only rapper to make a cameo on that classic album besides the members of Wu (who else could it be N-A-S NAS).

Wow... That's one interesting bullshit comparison to say that jay-z won. :lol

Facts =/ bullshit. Nas even ends up working for Jay-Z when he was the President of Def Jam. Can't beat em'- join them. Nas won a battle (Ether was nice) but Jay-Z definitely won the war.

They're buddies now. I like happy endings and to me that's what makes this old rivalry so great.

I can't believe no one mentioned this one...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW1XOy3qY7o

[Verse One]
I hear these cats, but I ain't listening
A little faint dissing, a little scratch, a little paint missin'
But I still gleam and glisten, hot like a stream of piss 'n
I'm about to have ya whole team wishing
That you never got this shit started
You about to be dearly departed, you gotta be nearly retarded
To let me hear my name mention, try'na gain attention
Now I'm runnin' through this game lynchin'
And I heard a few cats tryna take shots on the low
These XFL rappers tryna fuck with a real pro
One thing; who named y'all the High and the Mighty?
To me, ya'll just sound like a couple of High Whities
You had to be on mad coke and XTC,
To think for a second, you can stand next to me
Look, don't ever again mention my name in ya freestyles
Or I cut off ya transmission faster than Lee Miles
And I heard ya album, this must be something you're new at
'Cause I rather hear a Lil' Wayne/Lil' Zane duet
My cellphone stay ringin', like a slap in the ear
So I hope y'all don't plan on making rap a career
Cause ever since Heav' was in Vernon I been burnin'
Next year, y'all be up in Rawkus, interning
And I shoulda let it known what your government names are
To make sure you +Take It Personal+ like Gang Starr, motherfuckers

[Verse Two]
Yo, yeah I heard of the Boogiemann when I was a youth, scary
And I found out that he was as fake as a tooth-fairy
Since my last mission this nigga's been ass-kissing
I took a minute, I gave your single a fast listen
Tell me this, no pot to piss in? How you dissin'
You group holmes are about to report that you missing
And I don't know who was worse, the track or the verse
I'ma get to your producer, but I'm smacking you first
See I couldn't even find one nigga that heard of you
I did find a few cats that wanted to murder you
But I told 'em "Chill", I let 'em know you was my son
And I promise I can pay support to you twenty-one
Consider me the clothes on your back and a warm meal
Who knows, this might just get you a deal
And the day that your album go on sale for the first hour
Just remember like Nas nigga, +I Gave You Power+
I figured I give ya some help, cause you need lots
I make your producer change his name to Speed Nottz
Tell him I say "Fuck him!" for doing the tracks
Matter of fact, fuck Fat Beats, for doing the wax
I'ma diss you via e-mail and then through a fax
I'ma diss you by two-way, I ain't gon' never relax
I'ma diss you over fast, slow track or no track
If your shit wasn't so wack, I dissed you to yo' track
You that little fish that I catch and I throw back
And by the way, give 50 Cent his flow back
You that cat in the club that get hit with a bottle
Fuckin' with me? You better off trying to hit lotto
And don't answer back, this is hard shit to follow
And you can't spit nigga, so you obviously must swollow, motherfucker..

after all it made jay-z cry didn't it? (takeover was a decent retort)

First off, make sure you're facts straight before posting, Takeover wasn't a retort. Secondly, it is no where the best diss ever, as Takeover is better.

Then you have stuff like Common's bitch in you, to No Vasaline, to real muthaphuckkin g's, hit em up, The Bridge is over. No diss track has had the impact that The Bridge is over had, shut down a whole borough for years until Nas came up.

I remember seeing a documentary on the Nas-Jigga beef, and Nas said he and everyone froms Queens feared that one day they would have to come up against the Blast Masta.

Hit Em up was just pure venom.

Uh no. The first two verses on Ether don't at all concentrate on Jay. Maybe a few lines, but the rest is Nas rambling about ashes and rings.

Come on now, you know exactly what I was referring to when I posted that in response to No Vaseline. Nas' actual diss verses went straight after Jay-Z the entire time as opposed to No Vaseline, which went after all of Ice Cube's former group members in NWA. The "warm up portion" of the song doesn't take away from that. Even No Vaseline had an intro before the diss full of recorded audio from NWA and random fans.

As far as Jay vs Nas, Nas won no contest. Ether was a response, and he hit back harder than anyone would have imagined. When that Ether came on the first time, it was like shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, it's over. No one gave a shit about Superugly because of Ether, plus the beat was softer than Ether's. You need to get on something grimy to respond to that venom, and Jay went the wrong way by choosing wack ass Hate Me Now.

Face it, every time someone mentioned getting "ether'd", Nas wins again.

I also like Jada and Styles P's Problem Child diss at 50.

2nd Round Knockout should be in everyone's Top 3.

O please, some of those are just ridiculous. Jay-Z didn't break up with a woman so he won a RAP battle? Nas lost a RAP battle because he chose a controversial name for his album and they told him to change it? Because Jay-Z has had so many controversial titles like Blueprint... Not to mention none of this has to do with their rapping in the least. Do we compare sport athletes by how long they spend with their spouse now?

Again, New York Says Nas won that beef battle. Ether simply destroyed Anything Jay said or did. Ether is the best diss track ever, thats why its still referenced and talked about till this day.

Jay-Z might be more successful, but Nas clearly won that fight. And remember kids, just because you are successful, doesn't mean that your the best or even all that good (see Soulja boy, lil wayne, plise, Souther coonery music in general).

Jay-Z is a beast, but the beast got bitch slapped by the Nas.

Nas won the rap beef hands down. Sure Jay is more successful and you can say he "won the war" but at the end of the day, Nas proved himself to be the better MC. He's been struggling recently but even at his worse he's trying new things. Jay-Z has been re-releasing the same album for a decade almost. The only thing that changes is whatever fad he decides to jump on. With BP3 he turns in the soul loops for techno/electronic beats - and raps about the same shit. Pass

Maybe the divorce and adversary will light a fire under Nas' ass and he'll release a solid album. Maybe not though.

Illmatic, IWW>Jay's career

Shawn Merriman just caught a case over freaking Tila Nguyen. He LOST!

TLT is like, his second best album, for real.

Best diss song ever is Sweet Home Alabama, by Skynnrd. Punched a hole through Neil Young you can drive through. And sold, like, a trillion records. Although it was a rebuke about how racist the South was, so I'm not sure they scored a moral victory. Closely followed by You're So Vain by Carly Simon but she never had the stones to name the culprit.

White rock bands have been writing diss songs for longer.

No, but we do compare them by their stats, the # of championships they win, etc. Those are pretty equivalent to awards, album sales, etc.

There was more to that war than the "RAP battle" that you keep referencing. The battle as a whole went beyond the songs and the rapping. You ignored that when you addressed Crazyorloco's post.

None of which he mentioned at all in his post... And if you just want to go by album sales then 50 cent, kanye, and a whole slew of others are better than N.W.A. and a bunch of other rappers.

To your edit: Maybe it did but the things he picked out to as the only things he picked out to prove his point is just flat out laughable. Again, I'm never going to give the nod to one rapper over another based on how long he was with his wife.

You're still missing his point. He said "Nas won a battle (Ether was nice) but Jay-Z definitely won the war."

I'm assuming this means that he admits Nas won the rap battle, but Jay-Z won the overall pride war. Obviously no one thinks that rising to become the CEO/President of a major corporation, having a hot wife and having sex with another rapper's baby's mom makes the former a better rapper. Totally irrelevant. But don't act like those things don't factor into the overall conflict between the two.

I have no idea what you're arguing with me over. I was and and still am responding to the bullet points he used which I think are laughable. I'm not arguing anyone won over the other, I'm saying some of them were convoluted. He didn't explain it by you he made crappy bullet points and I said as much. I'm not arguing about legitimated points I'm arguing about stupid points that he made.

Well in defense of Byakuya769, he says "At the end of the day" meaning long-term success, so he's not really referring to THAT BATTLE. The winner of that battle is really a subjective matter. There was so much released from them after those songs (Takeover/Ether) that had shots at each other.

In my opinion they're both are great artists. And although I've always been Jay-Z fan a little more (I like feel good music I can bump at a party, but also like the introspective Jay, that makes me think about lyrics. He has both qualities to me) Ether shocked my ears. I couldn't wait to hear how Jay-Z would respond. It made me study all future Nas/Jay's songs for subliminals messages.

Lyrically those albums are great. Hell...overall Nas lyrically is great, but I wouldn't say this surpasses Jay's career. Jay-Z is doing it for the dollars. I hope that makes sense.

And I agree, maybe Nas's divorce will make Nas release higher quality albums again. Seems like when emotions runs high artists release better material. (Angry Eminem rules)

as opposed to Nas political gimmicks like the Nigger album and Hip Hop Is Dead? yeah he was really saying something there.

Ill take Reasonable Doubt over Illmatic personally. Sure mafioso rap has done before but Jay did it the best. Ill take RD over any other mafioso album.

I don't really feel Jay-Z, but all of his albums are good to great. The same can't be said about Nas, and that pretty much ends who had a better career...

But Illmatic is the best album between the two imo..

Nas fans have to be some of the most defensive fans in hip hop. I saw another guy lose his mind on a forum cause someone dare challenge the greatness of Nas. It's taste people, let's calm down.

Damn some of you are so full of shit. Seem to be arguing who fucked whose wives, who made who cry on the radio and who sold and did what in albums following and prior and not on the diss tracks themselves.

I could give a fuck about all the other shit because it doesnt matter. The actual tracks do. I vote Hitem up as #1 and Ether as #2 and Nail in the coffin as #3.

But all based on the content of those tracks individually. Nothing to do with who won what 'war' who is fucking who, who has more street cred and all of that dumb shit. Those are the best individual TRACKS imo as far as disses go. You start tying in all the other bullshit and you blur the discussion.

I actually partially agree. He half-sucks. He has talent, but he's so caught up in trying to say a message when he doesn't have the means or ability to convey it. Nas thinks he's deep, the problem is that outside of Illmatic, he really isn't. And half of his lp discography is average.

He needs to study history more...

Pretty much Blueprint 3 in a nutshell. Garbage album, dude feels himself WAY too much.

Ether>All other diss tracks.

In all honesty Ether won the beef, Jay-Z started showing all this respect and love to Nas after he go the track(Not right away I know). But you guys can't deny that Ether affected Jay-Z.

Anyway second best diss trackis of course No Vaseline, followed by Hit Em Up. And I won't lie The Game's disses have all been entertaining.

Oh and Illmatic>anything Jay-Z ever did.
