Is Square Enix back on the path of the glory days ? (Squaresoft)

Considering that these games will probably be released by 2020. I think it's too early to say anything. Looks promising though.

Atlus was always better.

What is this that people keep talking about with PS2 glory days? I can't seem to remember any PS2 glory days. I can remember SNES and PS1 glory days just fine however.

They're making an actual effort to get better. I absolutely love it. Now don't let me down Square, or you'll be dead to me forever.

They all look amazing, but time will tell. What really surprises me is how they can get me excited for mobile games. Yeah, previous ports of RPGs have been mostly average to terrible, but from what I played of Final Fantasy Record Keeper was really fun, while the game itself wasn't amazing we saw that a Deus Ex game on the go was possible, and Hitman Go was a genius idea. Not played Hitman Sniper (though if other people here like it I'll get it) but I'm excited for Lara Croft Go, and I don't think that I've ever been excited for a mobile game,

I feel it's way to early to call anything on this. I'm still upset with how they treated DQ fans in the west and how they aren't fixing their games or taking a long time to do it(FFX ps4 RNG and how they left that crappy motion blur in type 0 until people called them out on the PC version letting you easily change it) I'm also still upset that they won't allow me to play Valkryie Profile Lenneth or Crisis Core on my Vita. With how there releases have been it's going to take more than announcing some games that are long ways out for me to think Square is back.

I think it's pretty impossible for them to return to the glory days fans long for. They had too many notable titles releasing within a close period, and all were quite good. But like I've been saying for a couple of years, they are pretty focused on fixing a lot of their wrongs, and making sure their development pipeline is better this generation.

The Eidos side is doing a great job, but they're also showing off a lot of their projects being made in Japan. There's still more to come, but I think these titles need to release, and be judged, before anything can really be said about how successful they were. It's nice to plan titles, or announce them early, but it doesn't mean anything until the title releases, and delivers a certain level of quality.

If FFXV and KH3 are genuinely good games, and the smaller titles like World of FF, the Platinum crossover, Setsuna, Dissidia etc. are all decent, then it's definitely a step in the right direction for fans. But beyond those, it's also important titles like FF7 and XVI are good, and delivered in an timely manner, as well as the other projects they have in concept/plans. An announcement is one thing. It's full of potential, and expectation. All it takes is to screw up the end result however, and you're not really any better off then. It leaves you further disappointed.

For me, I hope FFXV is really good. I don't really care right now for what's coming beyond. I'm still waiting on a FF that grabs me like the original PS1 trilogy did. Something new, something exciting. It's been quite a long time since then with nothing but disappointment to varying degrees. I'll base my judgment as a fan according to that, and KH3, since they're the two I'll play out of the currently announced lineup.

While not on the level of FFVII, do you know of anything that SE still has up their sleeves to announce over the rest of the year that might blow fans away?

Since the new Dragon Quest Game will get announced this year, i think DQ 11 on Ps4 would be a pretty big deal

First they gotta release those games in a timely manner before we can claim anything of the like. Old Squaresoft not only cranked out good RPGs, they did so very frequently. The amount of time between FFVII and FFX was five years, with tons of other side projects like Vagrant Story or Parasite Eve or Chrono Cross in the interim.

I'll agree with that and yeah, that's a fair call.

You know... it's interesting though. I've never blinked an eye at the KH series. Didn't care about it. Even KH3. I was only going to get it based on the hype GAF has cried out and from the reactions from E3 2013.

After seeing the recent trailer at this years E3? I'm getting the game based on hype I've managed to find from that new trailer. They're doing a good job at presenting their new projects but in the end, it's as you said. They need to deliver on the final product.

UNTIL that final product is delivered though... my hype is through the roof for them!

As others put it, I don't think SE will ever fully recover its 90s and early 00's status, either because of the loss of important talents or other reasons like higher cost of game development. I'll be satisfied with a PS2 era SE.

Just because they're making them doesn't automatically mean they'll be good. Even though I'm not that interested in a FFVII remake I still expect them to screw it up in some major way.

Eidos has always been good, so of course their games improved Square's brand, including the publishing of the original Arkham Asylum at one point and having a lot of stock in the developer Rocksteady.

I have 0 faith in their Japanese department however, which is kind of a shame. They were my heroes back in the day.

Eidos has always been good? Ehh, I don't think you recall Deathtrap Dungeon, Ninja and Fighting Force :P

Anyways, SE's been more interesting to me now than in the last 10 or so years... new Nier, new Star Ocean, new RPG IP and finally an FF7 remake. I'm hoping they all turn out to live up to their expectations. And I can't wait to see what DQ11 and SaGa Vita turn out to be like. Seems that after FF14's unprecedentedly successful relaunch, SE has a lot more resources to focus on console games again.

I have time-traveled from the distant future of 2019 to let you all know that, no, Square Enix is not back and we were all wrong. They became something worse. Far worse. It was folly, all of it!

Star Ocean 5, in an attempt to outdo SO3, reveals that WE are actually characters in a computer game, programmed to play even more computer games. It's really quite zen, but the realization causes a collective implosion of PS4s resulting in many lawsuits.

Nier 2, true to their word, ends on a joyously happy note. There are rainbows, sunshine, kittens, puppies, lolipops, Santa Claus... but it's so happy that when you turn the game off, you realize how awful and less colorful real life is, and then you get more depressed than any time prior. That was their intent all along.

Final Fantasy XV is released. It sells well, but the story takes a nose-dive in the final act when it's revealed that Noctis was the car all alone, with his friends riding him through a trippy Gainax-induced apocalypse that culminates in them bumping into Lightning in rural France.

Rise of the Tomb Raider comes out and sells over 10 million copies. Square Enix calls it a disastrous release since they expected at least 50 million. Crystal Dynamics is closed up shortly thereafter.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided succeeds... too well. It divides all of mankind in real life after half the planet augments themselves with robot arms and legs that do everything from peeling potatoes to earning their own Ph.D's in nano-science. The have-nots blame the game for making them feel inadequate in their normal, human, fleshy bodies, and retaliate by burning Eidos to the ground.

Final Fantasy 7 remake comes out and is so good that nobody buys any other games ever again because they only need this one game for the rest of eternity. The video game industry crashes for good and never recovered. There are piles of unsold copies of Parasite Eve 3 and Bushido Blade 3 now in a landfill in Arizona.

The secret Project Setsuna JRPG turns out to be a ruse. It was a real-life JRPG simulator about a great video game CEO who had to level up in cash and prestige to defeat boredom until he could retire to a golden island filled with Cactars and genetically created Chocobos and moogles, populated only by test-tube women resembling Lightning and Vaan.

Final Fantasy XIV gets the best new expansion. No one leaves their rooms ever again, meet new people, or have sex. The global population plummets 50% and birthrates decline into the single digits.

Just Cause 3 is released. It's pretty fun, actually.

Square Enix announces six more Dragon Quest games. None of them come to America. I'm told they're good.

Kingdom Hearts III is released and conquers the world. I'm currently writing this while a Heartless guard patrols outside my bedroom window. It's nearly 2:00 p.m, which is our mandatory sing-along time to sing "Let It Go". At 3:00 p.m., we have Lightsaber demonstrations. 4:00 is mandatory Avengers movie group watchings. Disney is all. Disney is life. The Mouse watches all. We can't escape. We can never escape.

Keep in mind that a big reason why Square was as huge as it was in the late 90s was that they were so ridiculously far ahead of the rest of the industry in terms of storytelling and presentation. Their golden age came about from them finally making a game where the mainstream noticed this (FF7,) and their "downfall" was simply a matter of the rest of the industry catching up. It would be cool to see them get that lead again, but I don't see it happening.

I dont think Square is back to glory days soon, but they are currently trying to.

Lets hope they are succeed. Their success for going back to glory days is also a win for us.

It's too early to tell IMO.This is still the same company that made 3 shitty Lightning games. Lets wait and see how (and when) all their upcoming projects turn out.

Bravely Second has 2016 release window in the West. That's through Nintendo though.

I am definitely seeing an improvement for Square Enix but the glory days are still very far away.

As others have mentioned, the PS1 era had Square releasing games pretty quickly. Because of how long it takes to make a game with these super high quality graphics, its taking years. Sorry, over 10 years for FF15 is just inexcusable.

I would rather see more games with lower quality graphics then having to wait a decade. Here is what I would love to see:

  • Return to the ATB system with turn based combat
  • Stop spending so much time developing a game because of the insane graphics. I'll take PS1 style graphics or slightly better any day
  • Listen to the fans. FF7 is a good start but we want Chrono 3 and a return to other series like Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics 2 (like the original), ect.
If Square Enix starts taking these steps, I'ed say the glory days are back.

They can say that all they want. Until they actually prove it, I will continue to view modern Square as undeservedly pretentious, melodramatic, yet still somehow completely emotionally hollow.

I personally still don't really associate their Eidos acquisitions with them. Bravely Second might be okay, maybe. But KH and FF are so far up their own ass that there's nothing about them that sings "glory days" to me.

I'd say no they aren't like was mentioned earlier squaresoft released a ton of games each year on the ps1 and they were great games. All we have right now mostly is announcements of games and target years. kh3 who knows as well as ff15 with star ocean coming out next holiday i could see ff15 getting pushed back to 2017. It would be great if squareenx would make some midbudget rpgs for consoles to help fill in the gaps for when they don't have these AAA jrpg games come out, hopefully world of final fantasy is good.

Yes and no.
FF15 is so far off so I might change my opinion later on. But the current gameplay for FF15 is just slow and bad.

But other than that, yeah, they are announcing so many games that I was taken by surprise. And creating a JRPG studio to promote/create new IP instead of just FF/DQ? It feels like they know that their current JRPG IPs are inferior to their past golden age.

The fact they're finally getting round to remaking FF7 suggests to me they've no idea what they're doing anymore to be honest. I could respect them refusing that, saying they don't want to retread old ground, but now they're doing it and it's going to be very different? Seems like a big mistake. Great way to waste a ton of money making a remake very few people want instead of the remake people have been so clearly saying they do.

Other than that there's a lot of unknown quantities tbh. Hitman looks kind of dull, FFXIV is marmite as hell and FFXV is either going to be amazing or awful.

Just Cause 3 and Kingdom Hearts 3 look lovely though.

I don't think anything we have seen announced really matches SNES/PS1 era Squaresoft, but maybe we are getting back to PS2/early-DS era Square-Enix which I think most fans would take at this point.

They never left, in fact in the early hd era when all the japanese companies started to fall square was still the only one putting a good output of products. I doubt they will ever reach their pre Enix era quality thought but it's not their fault, the marked has changed so much in all these years .

i don't think this was an act of desperation, but more due to Nojima - Kitase and Nomura finally being available (since they were they all busy over the last gen with their projects)

It was like the perfect time & and since Nomura and Kitase don't get younger, now or never.

its on of the most requested titles in the world. apart from the Remake they are still working on FF15 and FF16

Nope, they still havent made a Final Fantasy Tactics (not a handheld), Parasite Eve (console), Vagrant Story, Front Mission (not that third person game), a beautiful Mana like Legend of Mana for consoles.

So no they still aren't back. They didn't even create a Chrono game for this generation...

I disagree. Remember when the PS4 launched? I remember Sony was talking about launching new with that system and other companies starting anew again with them, during this. Square Enix must have been exactly the company they were referring to specifically for that.

Sorry... I don't remember when that was said but I am 99% sure it was said during the reveal or the 2013 E3 conference.

I don't think they will reach the iconic status they got back in the Super Nintendo/PlayStation 1 days, but they are going to be one of the 'big' publishers of this new generation :).

I mean, they have a huge line up of games coming across the following years.

2015:
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Typo-0 HD
Realm Reborn Expansion Pack (I think?)
FFX and FFX-2 HD PS4
Hitman
Just Cause

2016:
FFXV (Japan - Spring/US and EU - Fall)
KH Collection (1.5 HD, 2.5 HD, KH3D HD, KH3 Demo)
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
New Sleeping Dogs (Please, the first one was so good :D)
Upcoming JRPG
FF: Desida PS4
Neir 2 (Platinum is making it...so I think this should be out next year :). If Rising means anything, they make games fast XD)

2017:
KH3 (Worldwide Release - Spring 2017)
FFVII Remake (Fall - Worldwide release)
News on Dragon Quest
Dragon Quest Heroes 2
Unannounced Edos Tittles
Square Collective Games (the ones they let the gaming community make piches for tittles like Gex and the like)

They have a lot of stuff coming and it is a huge contrast to last generation (where they mainly released FFXIII and its sequels on consoles alongside there Edos tittles.

Its great to see them finally 'get' HD development now and I hope they get a lot of success this new generation :D.

They're turning the ship around, but I don't see them ever reaching the same level they had in the 90s. Plus considering this is SE, they may just find a way to mess it all up.
