Is Support For VITA already dying? [Use the new thread]

Japan was always seen as the lock for the Vita though, western countries were always going to be more of an uphill battle.

The big Japanese publishers just don't want to give up making easy money on psp games.

My heart sinks whenever a new psp game is announced.

No it's not the same, there were indications GT4mobile was a real product at the time. Meanwhile Levine admitted in E3 interviews that Bioshock Vita was still an idea or something.

Admitted? An idea? He just said the development was still in pre-production.

Nice try spinning it.

While I acknowledge the awesome of free PSO2, it's free everywhere on all platforms. Not to say that diminishes it being the only handheld system version compatible with the "big boys", but having it free everywhere else isn't going to make it a Vita system seller and drive systems.

and to this date, do we know anything about BioShock on VITA? Would it help if it comes out 3 years from now?

It's been super quiet on any details for COD, AC and Bioshock on VITA since they were announced. How do we even know they will come out before end of this year?

Uh, I think I'll take Ken Levine at his word and assume that he didn't lie to our fucking faces.

You guys... smh

It's too early.
That answer may be unsatisfactory, and yeah they do have an uphill battle, but you are calling the race while the echo of the starter pistol is still in the air. Just relax. It may well be doomed but it's just way too early to tell, and even a semi-casual observer can tell Sony is not out of Vita ammo by far just yet.

Eh what? Making it free is THE thing that should make it a system seller. You can play PSO2 on the go without having to pay for the game twice or even once.

It's online-only, and not to rehash the same old CoD debates, but I don't think online multiplayer has the capacity to be a bona-fide system seller on a handheld.

Reports of $160.00 apx worth of materials that comprise a vita. I suspect a price drop by year's end but that is just a guess.

Ken is a cool guy... but shit can happen. Game business is unpredictable these days.

Did psp have any 'system sellers' outside of japan?

I don't really see the two being comparable, honestly. That was what? 7 years ago with a system that didn't need games as badly as Vita?

All systems need games badly when they first launched. I figured looking at the PSP's first E3 announcements outside of GTA would be a good indication of what we could look forward to support wise for the Vita this year.

Bioshock Infinite for Vita is still being talked about recently:
http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/08/levine-wants-to-show-you-bioshock-on-vita-not-talk-about-it/

Personally, I'm more curious in the DUST514 companion app for Vita:
http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/04/dust-514-goes-free-to-play-vita-version-a-companion-app/

Ciel no surge and Organythm sound interesting too, although we are still waiting for Gravity Rush to drop in June.

I definitely appreciate the lack of a forming backlog for my Vita, but I seriously haven't played it in about a week. I have Katamari, Unit 13 and Little Deviants, SuperStarDust and MS: RC, but nothing too look forward to. Sure, it's been out about 1 month, but I don't want the damn thing collecting dust! I'll be patient l guess...

Talk and logos are cheap. Gamers were burned by promises of GT PSP so it is understandable if they are a little standoffish of vague announcements with nothing to back them up.

What has GT PSP got to do with Bioshock for Vita ? I got disappointed by Halo 2 massively but that doesn't mean Gears will suck.

As of that post in early March 2012, they are still committed, and want to show the game to us later. If it changes later, then someone will announce the new direction when the time is right.

Try Mutant Blobs Attack and Rayman Origins ! ... if you are looking for a Vita game that is.

I think the point was that GT PSP was first discussed at E3 '04, but wasn't actually released until '09... clearly it wasn't really in development when it's first announced. Right now, Bioshock Vita only seems to exist on paper. That doesn't mean that it's not something that Irrational is seriously intent on making, but it does mean it's likely not coming anytime very soon.

Yes.

orgarhythm

That's as 'big' as it gets though :9

Oh and something called PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2.

-and you have that Gundam game, looks pretty neat.

the gameplay sounds promising... but man do the visuals look blaaaannnnd.

The system needs more vibrant games to make that screen pop. I do hope this gen, cel shaded visuals will be more prominent on portables.

I going to try to ask a serious question. How are the sales numbers for VITA?

Not well.

It's doing a bit over 10,000 a week in Japan (LTD ~630,000). I think the last western number we heard was 66,000 in France since launch.

It's selling worse than the Gamecube right now.

I'm talking about just putting a logo on the screen and nothing else to show for it then using it as a carrot on a stick for gamers to buy the system when in reality these games could take years and years to release if ever.

If you want to talk about games for any system, talk about actual games being announced or shown. Logos on a screen mean nothing and shouldn't be allowed in logical discussion.

They said Bioshock for Vita is not a port. People don't even know what kind of game it is. Who would wait for it ? If developers are working on the game, then they should take the necessary time to complete it.

People talk about games when companies showed "fake" cinematic renders anyway. If they truly are working on the title, then yes, feel free to say it. And I will have good faith to see what they have to offer. I am not exactly holding my breath to see it anyway. I have a Vita backlog already.

While I agree with the sentiment, we are judging the game via a low quality YouTube video. The final Vita game will run on a HiDPI display too.

I'm not sure what your point is. Did Ken Levine actually say that BioShock on VITA will be released this year?

I never said BioShock on VITA (or the other two games) is not happening. I said we don't know if they are coming out this year because we haven't heard any details since last E3 and I'm not sure if those titles would matter if they will be released 3 years from now.

On March 8th 2012 (last month), Ken said he'd rather show you the game rather than talk about it. That could explain the silence.

The Vita is an amazing piece of hardware. Easily the best handheld ever released. But it's several years too late to market. Consumers want multi-purpose devices that also play games, myself included. I know that the iPad can't compare to the hypothetical releases on Vita, but I also don't have deep enough pockets to throw money at both.

5 years ago buying the Vita would have been a no-brainer. Now, it's much less appealing than an iOS device. As a gamer I want one, and I want the product to succeed. As a consumer, I'm just not willing to pay for it. The market and with it my priorities have changed.

I suspect many people are in this dilemma. It's up to Sony to convince folks to buy Vita. 3DS shows that people are willing to buy an inexpensive dedicated gaming console *if* there are compelling content even today.

As a company, Sony will also watch the trend and evolve.

you know the game was only 10% complete they mention that it didn't have any sharers on it as well

This doesn't seem to be a problem for 3DS.

Consumers maybe want multi-purpose devices that also play games. But there are a lot of gamers that may be interested in portable consoles, if those consoles have games that they can't play on their multi-purpose devices.

What the 3DS has shown is that consumers will buy a dedicated gaming handheld, assuming it's cheap. I doubt it's possible to profit on a high-end dedicated gaming handheld in this market...which is what the Vita is trying to position itself as.

The notion that a price drop alone turned 3DS around, and will turn Vita into a commercially viable platform, is wishful thinking, and will be proven as such if Sony actually does drop the price without being accompanied by any major yet-to-be-announced software. Mark my words.

I would hazard to say that, yes, a price drop alone would work for nintendo. Why? The fanbase following nintendo titles are anticipating the first party staples. Sooner or later those titles will come and if you are a fan of those titles, getting the system after a pricedrop is a no brainer.

Sony on the other hand is more of a question mark in terms of the titles, so they would benefit either the combo of a price drop + highly acclaimed title release or simply having highly acclaimed/scored titles hit the market.

While I acknowledge the awesome of free PSO2, it's free everywhere on all platforms. Not to say that diminishes it being the only handheld system version compatible with the "big boys", but having it free everywhere else isn't going to make it a Vita system seller and drive systems.

As far as I was aware, I only heard PC, Vita, ios and android. The home consoles did not seem to be included in the announcement.

Is not only a price issue. 3DS sell a lot now because of the price drop AND the games. Without the price drop, a lot of people would have bought 3DS for Mario Kart, Mario 3D Land and, in Japan, for Monster Hunter. Not the same amount of people, but still a lot. We'll never know, but if we check the japanese charts, the price drop helped (the average units each week got higher), but the combo Mario Kart 7 + Super Mario Land 3D + Monster Hunter, released very close between them, made the sales explode.

Some people (including me) think that a $300 console (including a MC and taxes) plus $49 games is a bit too much...

Except that you can find easily the console with a card for 250$ (even less), and games are not $49, there are a few in that price (always cheaper if you buy them in PSN), but you have a range of prices from free to $50, being $30 and $40 the more common prices (and with a lot of great games for less than $15).

Battery don't die quickly, is higher than 3DS, and you can get easily 5 hours of game.

But I agree that price is a factor. Vita will sold more in the long run, when the price get more similar to 3DS (that won't get a price drop in years, and can even get a higher price in a redesign), specially if it gets some more exclusive games.

that's witha 4gb MC wich will be useless in a few months/years and you'll end up buying another one and you're not including taxes.

A 4 gig should be in the box by default so that at least all games could boot. I'm waiting on a price drop, memory card, and game packed in before picking one up ala PSP-2000.

is 3D still a selling point of the 3DS? I dont know anyone who owns one that has the slider anywhere but off.

yes. I just got one recently, it was 162 + 70 for a 32gb card through Amazon Warehouse deals. I would never have bought one otherwise. It needs a 4gb in the box.

If you stick mostly to boxed games, you'd be 100% fine with 4gb.

You're just twisting things to fit your argument.

Also, there are, what, TWO whole games for $49?

Of course it is. If you haven't used it, it seems like it would be a really cool feature. It's nowhere near as good as I was hoping BUT I actually do use the 3D on most games.

I don't want to sound like a troll here which of course I know everyone will asume. I am just saying my point of view.

Some people (including me) think that a $300 console (including a MC and taxes) plus $49 games is a bit too much...

I also believe battery dies too quickly, there aren't enough good games to justify the purchase, there might be a price drop coming soon, we could see a redesing in the near future and it's not full BC with psp.

I know I just wrote general problems for all new consoles but Sony should've know better before anouncing that price.

They should man up like when they started selling ps3 for $299 shaving off $100 of an already loss-per-unit sale.

No monster hunter, God of war, Gran Turismo or Final Fantasy will make the vita sell a fucking ton, it's price what's holding the damn thing back.

the average parent, GF, gift giver walks into a store and sees a handheld that's 3d capable vs a machine that's costs $100 more and doesn't play mario kart, the majority of these persons will chose 3ds instead. Despite all I've said I want a vita so much but being on a reduced income I just can't affoard it, here's hoping Sony drops the price to $199.99...

To be fair when they announced the pricing for the Vita, it was the same price as the 3DS, and i'm actually pretty curious as to what things would have looked like if Nintendo had decided to not bite the bullet and hold on the original price.

According to Andriasang, Sony has started to bundle 4Gb card with Vita in Japan.

Then we'd have 2 slow selling handhelds.
