Is Switch potentially becoming the main console for many now?

Hardware wise yes. Software wise no. But if all game releases were equal to the other platforms then it would be my main. Which is really what I think the op is getting at. It goes without saying it doesn't have the library. I'd still buy some big graphical showcases on my PC but 4/5 games I play aren't pushing graphical boundaries anyway.

Yeah I think there is an interesting discussion to be had purely about the hardware and not at all considering the libraries available.

Like, a lot of people would undoubtedly go for a PS4 portable which sacrifices some processing power to be a portable console with a nice big screen, right? That's basically what the Switch is, if we're not considering libraries.

EDIT: How the hell did I get to the top of the page 3 pages in a row?

Not even close. I did not touch my Switch since I finished Zelda which was decent. I'll probably won't touch the thing again until Mario which is fine I knew I'd probably do that. I play way more on my PS4 Pro and PC. If Nintendo keeps pricing their games at 99 CAD$ I won't stick on the system long anyway.

I know what the majority plays, I'm just saying that it is viable to consider Switch a main console for a lot of people who don't care about those big western IPs. I never claimed the phrase: "A lot of people" meant: "Most of the market".

Sure, but any console can be a main console for some. I'm sure there were players who only played with the Wii U, even though it wasn't a huge success.

A lot of people or many of them gets associated with a majority of the market, and I don't think that will ever happen without those big franchises. I wish it did because it would be awesome.

Well the 3DS was the console I played the most the last years so there's a good chance for my Switch to take its place. Now I'll still be playing my PS4 and PC for games that are not available on it.

There's a lot of craziness in this thread already though. Something about Nintendo being successful makes people lose their shit.

You think it has anything to do with Switch fans constantly beating everyone else over the head about how their system's the greatest system ever?

The portability really makes it easy to spend a lot of time gaming on the Switch. I have spent a significant amount of time playing the Switch during my lunch hour or whenever I find myself away from the house. Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and ARMS are a great set of games for the launch window to keep players engaged. It really is a huge draw to have a full TV-style console game experience while on the go. Also, Super Bomberman R is a blast to play with friends either on a TV or out and about. The NEO-GEO games and indie titles that I have purchased (Snake Pass, Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero, Tumbleseed, and Blaster Master Zero) have all been great to play as well. The Switch has a small but solid library of games, which is nice. The rest of the year looks good too with Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Super Mario Odyssey all slated to hit before New Years. There's enough to play now and more coming real soon to keep Switch owners happy and gaming.

That being said, until Nintendo can snag a few popular 3rd party online games like Overwatch or something similar and few unique 3rd party exclusives, I don't see how it could be a total replacement for the PS4 or XBone. Plus, it's highly doubtful that big online games like Call of Duty or Battlefield will make it on the Switch. With a lack of big name titles from 3rd party publishers (online multiplayer or otherwise), it will be difficult for any entrenched PS4 or XBone owner to make the switch to primarily gaming on the Switch anytime soon.

Bottom line, I think the Switch is a fantastic system with a bright future ahead of it. Playing on the Switch has significantly cut into the time that I play on the PS4, and portability is a key factor that contributes to that. However, I've also been playing Overwatch and Friday the Thirteenth on the PS4 and will continue to unless they ever see a release on the Switch. The key to winning me over to playing primarily on the Switch is going to come down to the scope of the library both 1st and 3rd party, and how well their new online experience is when they finally roll it out.

The Switch has become my main gaming console. It fits my busy lifestyle better than the PS4 since I can easily pick it up, play a game, then put it down, along with being able to take it to work and continue playing where I left off.

I haven't touched my PS4 since I bought a Switch. Instead of buying a Pro, I upgraded my PC which has been a better investment. The 3rd party games that I want I'll get for PC, and those games look and run better than on the PS4. Everything else I'll get for the Switch.

The Switch is going to be the main console for some and for those who primarily play on handhelds, while for others it will be a nice compliment to whatever gaming that they currently do on PS4/Xbox/PC.

For me personally, I don't really play AAA games. When NBA 2K and FIFA come out i'll be covered between those, indies and Nintendo games. I wont really need a PS4 or Xbone anymore.

That is a huge part of the appeal for Swtich owners.

I don't think that a majority the PS4/Xbox/PC crowd feel that way though. The average, mainstream gamers is just fine playing CoD, FIFA, GTA, DOTA2 etc. on their big screens/PCs a few evenings a week.

They're not game obsessed people like us Switch early adopters on GAF who are trying to squeeze in every minute of gaming they can.
I guess that can well be the case.

The Switch is a handheld and doesn't have and likely will never have most of the games I play the most (SWBF, WRPGs, Battlefield, etc). So it'll always be a companion device to me.

Perfect trifecta of PS4 Pro, PC, and Switch. It's replacing the Vita's place for me.

Recent example for me is Hollow Knight.

I bought it during steam sale and I am playing every day I get home earlier ( to me that is 8pm)

Today and tomorrow I will only get home after midnight and if I had it on the Switch I could play a bit during lunch or coffee break.

Yesterday I played a short match of Street fighter during my shift and last week at a bar with some friends.

There is a lack of software, but the convenience is insane

I don't really see it as a Console...it's basically a portable and I don't see it taking any share over what Sony or MS have.

I'm waiting to see if Xenoblade 2 is any good story wise before buying one and I don't see it replacing my PS4/PC as a "main" system for gaming at all.

Hardware fetishism. When you have a new toy and it's soo shiny and great to use, you want everything on it, it's an obsession! Particularly with portables.

This, really. I bought an ipad several years ago. 6 month love affair. Same thing happened to my PSP, a 3ds, and most recently, my android tablet.

The only thing that stood the test of time for me was my Vita, and I honestly didn't expect it to. I'm sure the Switch will stand the test of time for many... but my point is that it's hard to look at the first few months of usage of a new device as representative of anything. It's still shiny and new. In a year, we'll know more.

Don't think it is any sort of major trend. If you play games and not consoles, an almost obscene number of high quality properties are never touching Switch. The idea that a functionality that we've all been familiar with for twenty five years is gonna cause a major exodus or "switch" in large amongst most game hobbyists is hilarious to me conceptually. Edit: I am sure many more gamers will think that choice is sensible relative to a WiiU naturally.

Just comically enthusiastic fanboys justifying their little tech crushes, not a real significant trend imo

i kinda agree with this. i feel i'm constantly being bombarded about it on gaf.

PS4 is still and this is because

1) Nintendo is stingy with it's flash sales so games that are on all systems, I end up getting on the PS4 or even XB1 since they give you better deals

2) No Youtube/Twitch(yet) on the Switch

3) For me at least, I only have ARMS as of this moment until Splatoon 2 comes out.

i kinda agree with this. i feel i'm constantly being bombarded about it on gaf.

It's not particularly surprising that people like talking about a new console, a hybrid no less, which may irk people for whatever reason. But damn, y'all be acting like people force you to post in these threads.

I have a very strong preference to getting games on the Switch as opposed to getting them on my PC. It just fits into my life much more frequently, which means I can enjoy the software I buy for it more frequently.

I don't think the Switch is going to affect PS4/XB1 hardware sales in a meaningful way, since it's not really a replacement for those, but I do believe software sales on those platforms could be effected to a considerable extent if the Switch becomes a success.

For me, it kind of has. I've built up a hefty backlog of Switch games. I'm probably not the average GAF gamer who has the time to spend several hours a day gaming, so Nintendo's big releases and Nindies keep me very occupied. I still want a PS4. I just kept putting off getting one for so long and now I can't really justify it after spending so much on Switch games that I haven't had time to play. The huge Uncharted (and Chloe) fan in me is craving 4 and the new DLC, but I know I won't have time to play it if I got it now.

The only annoying thing to me is how every thread about any game ever which predictably has no Switch version has like nineteen posts crying about a port.

Like hardcore Nintendo fans still haven't accepted Nintendo consoles will remain primarily for first party games. I know what I'm getting from my Nintendo console, some of the best games ever developed by Nintendo :P

When I get one, it will be. Hands down.

I probably use my Vita more than my PS4 to this day. I often opt for Vita version over PS4 version if both are available for a game.

Switch is my dream device. I just need a game to pull me in first.

Nope. PC will be my main, followed by PS4. The Switch is just another Nintendo console. That said, if indie games release day and date on it, I might favour the switch for portability.

people acting like this is what's going down lol

Yes for indie games. If those get a Switch release.

Nope for everything else. I'd rather play the Ps4 version.

Biggest thing is downloadables.

Switch is slowly becoming my defacto place to buy downloadables.

I've held off on Stardew for the Switch. I'm gonna buy Bloodstained on the Switch.

Shit like that is auto Switch buy.

I'm certainly not gaming exclusively on Switch, but given the option between buying a cross-plat game on PS4 and buying it on Switch, I'll probably opt for Switch. Having the option to play for an extra ~40min/day on the bus (or on flights, road trips, etc.) is a huge plus.

Granted, most of my gaming time prior to the Switch was on the 3DS or Vita, so I was definitely already in the Switch target market. The option to play titles on the big screen while at home is a nice plus, though!

What about Indies and Japanese third party games?

Its like people forget about 3DS having third party games. So no it isn't going to have primarily first part games.

Inb4 indies and Japanese games don't count.

It could, but they need to get some QOL updates going asap for that O.S.

I still don't think I can make it my main system because of their plans for online and chat alone. The external app thing is one of the stupidest things I've seen in gaming. I hope those functions get put on the system at some point.

Not for me. Yet, at least. I will say that I am very tempted to get a game ported to the Switch over another console's release though, which could very well turn it into a primary for me.

Zelda is a long game and Mario Kart and Arms and infintely replayable for people who love them, as is Puyo Puyo Tetris. The indies seem to new to a lot of owners too as I guess a lot are Nintendo only folk who missed out on the ones that weren't on Wii U or 3DS.

Mostly people don't need a lot of games. The diehard single player gamers on sites like this do, but most were fine with Xbox/PS4 first years as they were just dumping hours in to CoD, FIFA etc. like many Swich owners are Mario Kart, Arms etc.

I mean, it's not like Zelda and Mario Kart are Switch exclusives. I'm certain Nintedno fans had a Wii U already so I dunno wtf they jumped on the Switch for day one. Nintendo hasn't given me a single reason to buy a Switch until later this year for some Mario.

Then why are you posting in this thread about the Switch?

because i wanted to see how the op was substantiating the thread title and why did they think this was some sort of substantial trend?

imagine my disappoint when the answer was "posts on neogaf". i mean, this is the same place where we get dedicated threads for sightings of the switch in the wild.

I think a majority of the sales so far have been to diehard Nintendo fans rushing to get them. Once that core audience is exhausted I'm not sure how it will do. It doing as well as it has the first 3 months is awesome, but lets see how it's selling after 6 months before we declare it a hit.
Just so I understand do you also think the majority of shareholders are diehard Nintendo fanboys rushing to get Nintendo stock? How many diehard Nintendo fans are there actually?

If so I hope these diehard fans continue bringing me cash.

or could it be that there actually is a lot of neutral outside buzz around the system and it is you who is too myopic in the console 'wars'?

there are far more Nintendo fans than Wii U's sold so that's a pretty dumb point to make

It's a great complimentary system to my Pro/X1S and will continue to be that....I'll play the exclusives and odd indie here or there on it but beyond that, it's shelved. Haven't even really touched it since the MK launch.

It's odd for me...I was in love with the system at launch (mostly had to do with BotW looking back) but once the novelty factor wore off for me, I haven't had much urge to play on it.

Can't wait for Odyssey but beyond that I can't say there's anything I'm really beating the doors down for.

Considering my favorite franchises are not on it, no. But a couple of their games are finally interesting enough to catch my eye, so that's new.

I mean it will have some, but the majority of the big titles will skip. We see it already in the breakdown of Japanese third party announcements. Just vastly disproportionately for PS4. Even Monster Hunter 5 for goodness sake.

Of course there will be exceptions, as there were even on WiiU and GameCube and Wii. Exception merely proves the rule.

Indies count, and I mentioned them like three times ITT already. i champion indies almost certainly more than you ever have. But when people talk about making a console a "main", it still has similar issue. Waaaaay more Indies announced for the other systems than Switch atm. We will have to wait to see where that grows over time. Might be the one silver lining in third party support relatively speaking.

Everyone I know personaly that has a switch is in the "buy multiplats for the switch whenever possible" so while it does not have so many multiplats now, the future is going for a main console for most switch owners way

If Nintendo's next version of the Switch is strong enough and get 3rd party games like COD, Battlefield, RDR2, it's all I'd ever need.

And/or if MS or Sony copied the Switch and was possible to make something equivalent in power to PS4 or Xbox One for not an insane price point. I'd be all set, basically if I could play all the big 3rd party games that are out now with the same graphic fidelity on a Switch type of console, I'd buy that in a second

the annoying part is how there's always a totally valid reason to justify the port-begging

EA doesn't bring their games/ ports a lesser version of FIFA - "The Switch is selling so well. Why are EA shooting themselves in the foot?"
Capcom announces Megaman Collection for other platforms and not for Switch - "This developer has traditionally supported Nintendo and now they're not? We should totally make this announcement thread about that"
And for everything else - "I'm just port-begging because I want a portable version of the game, guys. Honest."

It's the perfect crime, and probably the reason the port-begging is so rampant. Just a lot of people convincing themselves that "it would just make sense"

yeah Switch is definitely the new Vita in that regard

people want games on platforms they own. I don't know why this fact makes you butthurt.
