Is Switch potentially becoming the main console for many now?

My PS4 is pretty much just a fighting game box now, which I'm completely fine with and am glad I have it for that. But I pretty much want everything else on the Switch now.

Same here other than those few standout PS4 exclusives like Bloodborne and Nier Automata.

Overall? Probably not. I am sure quite a few are though. Myself my Switch is an exclusive machine as the portability means nothing to me. If a game is on PS4 and Switch sorry my PS4 still gets priority.

There are definitely games in the Steam Sale that I'm holding off on buying on PC because they are coming to Switch this year.

Look at Switch marketing, they are not aiming at kids and family anymore. They are going for same audience from other consoles.
Xbox have been down YOY, PS4 have been down in Japan since Switch launch. Anyone who think Switch is not competing is delusional.

From my experience, at least, people are just into the Switch because it's a really likeable system. I've had multiple people tell me that they just find the system - even docked - a better experience than playing on other stuff, because games just feel right on it.

Which... I agree with, and cannot explain.

Is that actually diverting a meaningful quantity of people from other systems, though? I doubt it.

Handhelds > home consoles
Yeah essentially. I have given up on tv games. Even selling most of my old Wii/WiiU/PS3 games. I can't deal with a tv anymore.

I will keep my PS4 around for a few upcoming games like all Life is Strange games, The Last of Us 2, & Detroit, short experiences that I'm hyped for tho I'm still not sure if I'll get them,, but anything else I'm not getting, even if I really want it like Horizon or Far Cry 5. I just can't do it anymore. Its (literally) too painful to play tv games anymore. I just hope some 3rd parties like Overwatch and Persona 5 come to Switch and some first parties gets ports/remakes, but if they don't, then I'm never going back to play/replay them. I'm done with the disgusting tv games for good. And i couldn't be happier, even if I miss out on games from my favorite series, i just hope my faves make it over like NISA horror, Corpse Party, Danganronpa, Persona, but if they don't...then I'll probably skip them. I did play Persona 5 this year but it was such a dreadful experience, sitting stiffly in front of a tv, pretty much playing 10 hours a day to finish it as quick as possible. No more. Switch/3DS/PSV is my future.

PS4 outsold it last month in NA according to NPD and most likely did the same in Europe, so no at least not PS4.

Nintendo does need to sort out it's supply issues though for it to be a fair comparison, but I don't see either really taking much away from each other long term, both complement each other and almost all the major 3rd party games won't be on the Switch.

In terms of buying a PS4/XB1/PC? No, I dont think so. The type of games being released are pretty different, so getting a Switch doesn't serve all of the things you could potentially want to play.

In terms of selling software to people who own both a Switch and a PS4/XB1/PC? Definitely. People only have so much money to go around, and given that the Switch has a unique hook (portability), I'd say it definitely has an effect on game sales for the other three.

In my case, I find that my Switch purchases have taken their toll on my PS4 buying habits (and sadly, the PSV as well). I do still buy games from time to time (Persona 5 on the PS4, and a preordered Tokyo Xanadu on the PSV), but most of the gaming budget generally goes to PC and Switch games nowadays.

Switch had no noticeable impact on Xbox. It being down YoY has virtually nothing to do with Switch.

PS4 just had the best first half of the year it's ever had.

Switch is a great success. It also isn't affecting other consoles hardware sales at scale

Haven't used my switch in a while. Love the device but I only have Zelda and Mario kart so meh, and my siblings hog it

I do want my switch to be my indie device though.

They've only sold ~3m units, there are over nearly 100m PS4 + XB1

So no, ~90m+ gamers don't even own a Switch.

My GF and I both have switches, and after MK8D, we haven't turned them on very much. She is using 3DS a lot, and I'm playing PS4 a lot.

Wow it feels like this gen just started not too long ago. 100mil together already? Yeah consoles dying any time soon.

They are making the Switch. If I had the money though I'd play on all consoles + PC. No reason to ditch the others.

I can't even play all the games I own. People with all consoles are insane to me, especially ones with all consoles and join the others in complaining about not being able to tackle their backlog. So much wasted money. I even reject free PS+ games (which I have access to because someone here got PS+ by mistake). Time is too precious, the real cost that no one can afford.

(whispers) PC+PS4 is almost all platforms.

I'd prefer the PS4 for most gaming, but it's hard to occupy the TV for hours like that. Switch gives me gaming back a little bit.

Depends on region and console availability.

In Japan, absolutely. But in the US the Switch is likely a complimentary machine rather than a main console. This is due to so few new third party Western games coming to the platform.

The Switch has taken from my 3DS more than it has my PS4. In part because I'm liking it more portably (ESPECIALLY with tabletop mode) and also because I've had my 3DS for years so the number of games I've been playing on it is winding down. PS4 I have plenty of games to keep going back to.

one day people will learn that neogaf posts often do not reflect reality

also, its way too early for any conclusions regarding switch though things do look good

I always prefer playing on handhelds over PC/consoles. It's just faster, i cna play with my TV on and I can go into sleep mode any minute.

So yeah, unless my friends want to play something online I havent played anything on my PC since bought my switch.

Considering how PS4 sales doesn't seem to be affected by the Switch, I'd say no. If you mean gaming time between the two, then that's impossible to quantify.

No there isn't any evidence in any market the presence of Switch is slowing the sales rate of other consoles.

Switch is a success but not at the expense of MS or Sony

Consider this the PS4 just had it's strongest 1st half of the year in sales since it released during the same timeframe the Switch hit market

.

If anything the stock issues might mean its diverting gamers to other consoles..

I know for me it is. Plan on picking up a PS4 Slim now instead of a Switch. Stock is the factor.

I can't believe people actually think the Switch is competent as a portable with its size and battery life. Can't wait for the Switch SP revision, wouldn't even care if they remove the HDMI.

what's been even more bizarre is the frequent number of posters amongst here

Using GAF posts as a barometer for something this important.

I'm playing my Switch much more only out of necessity, being in remote area for work.

But I am looking forward to much more of the Nintendo announcements than the Sony/Xbox. The only games I'm looking forward to this year on Sony/Xbox is Anthem and Destiny 2 once I've finished Persona 5.

Nothing else interests me + the portability of Switch while I'm working and flying is a godsend.

The system is only at maybe 5 million worldwide, and is in short supply.

We should look at this if/when the Switch's supply meets the demand and has a bigger user base.

Because of the portability factor, many people would simply prefer multi-console games to be on the Switch, which is probably what you're seeing on Neogaf. If those games aren't on Switch(most third party game), people will just get them on PS4/XBO/PC.

Yup. Especially once you reach a certain age and you don't spend as much time at home or have 100% access to a TV.

Unless they manage to shrink the insides or there's a huge breakthrough in battery life it's not going to get much better. The Switch insides are almost all battery as it is.

No. Out of the half-dozen or so amazing games this year, only 1 has come out on the Switch. Just about everything else is on PS4.

The battery life is just fine. Three to four hours is about what I got from my 3DS.

And yeah I'd prefer most games, especially RPGs, on the Switch as long as they're not too heavily compromised. I'm really fiending for some Vanillaware and Falcom support. Got my PC for everything else.

Honestly, as a portable-first gamer, I feel like my "main" system last gen was my 3DS, even though I had other stuff. The Switch is going to be my main system again for the same reason.

Hopefully, the Switch gets a lot of the same sort of support the 3DS got: Ace Attorney is one of my favorite franchises of all time and I really want to see a new one taking advantage of the Switch, but you never know re: Capcom.

I think it's mostly that new console smell and wanting more games to play on it, but I have gone with the Switch for every multi-platform game I've been interested in since the console released. There has thankfully been a pretty good amount of parity from a quality standpoint, IMHO. Two games that come to mind are Snake Pass and NBA Playgrounds. As far as I'm concerned, the downgrades from XB1/PS4 are negligible and don't detract from the experience at all.

I actually picked up another game on Switch today that, historically, is from a series that was an XB1 pickup for me. The reason why? I can take it with me because the developers were savvy and made some QOL enhancements for the Switch edition. The game is Skylanders Imaginators, and I can scan in the figures I want to use (twice to truly unlock them), and simply pick them from a menu when I want to change; no need to plug in a portal and scan the figures on that.

The rise of tablet, big screen phones popularity since 2010 should tell anyone a bigger size doesnt matter. Battery life doesnt mean it isnt competent. I remember for some smartphones a battery pak, extended battery was needed. Didnt stop it from being a competent portable phone.

I remember when ppl laughed at the HTC EVO and Droid X, saying they were so big, looked like tablets. Now they would be considered small.

I'd really contest the idea that "a lot" of people are playing on switch INSTEAD of something else. First, that implies they already owned something else and also picked up a switch, which is probably true but means they will switch back as appropriate - right now its a bit of a drought new games.

Second, a few people posting here doesn't really mean that in any way, and I don't even see that. My friends list on PS4 and PC is just as active as ever. Tons of people playing MP games like UC4, IW, BO3, GTA5, Overwatch, PUBG, H1Z1, etc.

I don't ever see switch games in the top 20 on twitch beyond the first week spike. ARMs has only been out what, 10 days and I don't even see it in the top 50 games on twitch.

The reality is we won't know how the switch is doing until Jan or Feb 2018, when we find out how many units moved during the holidays. Thats the big time for consoles to fly off the shelves. Everything up until then is just sports team cheerleading.

There is no real data whatsoever to support the claim in the OP. If anything there's data to the opposite.

The amount of switch port begging threads on gaf are not reflective of reality.

I guess having a vocal minority on Gaf about how much they love their Switch/portbegging would result in thinking that. But that's not a representation of everyone that doesn't post on this website.

Honestly, you could go to the buy/sell/trade thread here and see all the people selling their Switch. I don't think a day has gone by for the last few weeks without someone putting their Switch up for sale. You'd think the system was failing, but it's not.

Which reminds me - if you're having trouble finding a Switch, you could probably buy one from a Gaffer right now.

No? Tv games are disgusting to me. Its extremely uncomfortable and I start hurting within 20 minutes, and it makes my room so much hotter, i'm glad I've finally just gave up on them. Past couple months have felt so good. It basically ruins any playthrough/replay of a game so considering most games I want to play are on portables now I'm fine if I miss out on some PS4 games or never replay Mario Galaxy/other Wii/WiiU games if they never come to Switch. Just won't deal with the pain anymore even if I miss out on some great PS4 games. The day Nintendo officially confirmed that they were going all portable was the best day in my gaming life.

Gaming is a luxury. In a perfect world we'd play anything we want when we want. If it makes someone happy I don't see what's wrong with it, as long as nobody is getting hurt in the process.

If its indie, I have effectively stopped buying them on PC unless unavailable elsewhere (and has no announcement for a release) or jives best with PC (some titles are still better with M/K).

Though that's happened with the PS4 for me.

Jesus Christ.

I can't comment on the accuracy of your data, OP, but here are my reasons for going Switch instead of the other consoles:

I'm primarily a PC gamer, so I want something different, both in colours and functions, so Switch, a hybrid console that let me play anywhere with plenty of games that are outside that "realism" colour palette is going to be my obvious choice. The play-anywhere aspect also suits my life better, at least until I can afford to game all day.

Also, living in Asia, it's the portable MonHun platform, so it's not like I have a choice in the matter.

I'm too busy to sit down and play games. I can fit in ten to fifteen minutes with Zelda here and there whenever I'm waiting somewhere or when I'm doing other errands like laundry, the bank, etc.

I can't believe people actually think the Switch is competent as a portable with its size and battery life. Can't wait for the Switch SP revision, wouldn't even care if they remove the HDMI.

Well that's the only reason I could consider a switch, as a handheld. For TV gaming I have much better options.

I just grabbed one the other day and I'm a little worried once I finish Zelda.

The store is absolutely miniscule coming from the PS4. It takes about a minute to go through every game on the system.

It will be a while before this become a problem.
