Is the average American dumber than a monkey? (Superbad related)

Watch Mind of Mencia with a group of frat kids. That'll make Superbad look like fucking Shakespeare.

I think Mind of Mencia is secretly a scientific experiment done by Spike Lee to see if Bamboozled would work in real life.

Well, to me the funniest scene was Cera
singing for the group of drunken, coked-up early 30s guys
. I agree for the most part the humor was very low-brow... fortunately, I don't have a problem enjoying low-brow. :D

The
dick drawing assault
during the credits wasn't uproariously funny, but there were some worth a chuckle in there.
Tiananmen Square
had me laughing the first time I saw it, though. :lol

Is anyone here familiar with The State?

One sketch was prefaced by stating certain people object to their sometimes immature humor. So they split the screen in half, trying to appeal to both contingents.

On one side was Thomas Lennon dressed in his most pretentious garb telling a biting Winston Churchill joke. On the other side was Ken Marino, wearing overalls with no shirt, making fart noises while laughing. He whipped out a whoopie cushion at one point and tried to make it fart, but missed the chair and fell on the floor.

Do you really want to get rid of stupid fart jokes? Superbad was able to combine crass humor with intelligent jokes and had a heart to boot. I don't know why this is a bad thing.

Anyway, I don't see how this movie is a sign of where comedies are going. It's a rare comedy that people widely liked. So was Knocked Up.
I'll just point out that Apatow is producing like a dozen movies over the next two years. They won't all be like 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Superbad, but some will be. And if you don't think we're going to get knock offs from other filmmakers and studios after they absorb the financial successes of those aforementioned three, then you're kidding yourself.

Whether you like it or not, this kind of comedy is going to continue to be present, and more than likely in larger quantities.

are we not men?

Haven't seen Superbad, but I wasn't a fan of Knocked Up because it seemed to completely drop the whole comedy thing about halfway through. Does Superbad fare better in this category?

Yeah. I was impressed by the movie. There is some very minor romantic comedy corniness. This is what Knocked Up and 40 Year Old Virgin should have been.

Superbad is better than both the others. 40 year old virgin is in the middle, and Knocked up is at the bottom.

you know for some reason, i hate fart and poop jokes.

but i like sexual jokes and dialogue. i guess thats why I liked Superbad. It didn't really have any fart/poop jokes.

The movie itself looks pretty stupid to me. I'm not a fan of these types of movies, and this looks even worse. It's a shame too, because I thought Michael Cera was great on Arrested Development (he played George-Michael Bluth).

I will say that I think Mind of Mencia is some of the most terrible garbage ever produced by man and that almost every new Family Guy episode (with the exception of the last one which was a BTTF spoof) sucked, but this movie was hilarious and all around awesome.

I can only think of three reasons why someone wont like this movie:

1) they are not in high school yet.

2) they dropped out of middle school and never went to high school.

3) they had a crappy time in high school and regress the memories.

I graduated high school and have good memories. I am not wasting money on this movie (I MAY check it out with Netflix), but the previews have not been even a little bit funny IMO. This looks like the type of movie where you have to either have the maturity level of a 14 year old or be drunk to enjoy (again, this is based only on previews i've seen and reviews I have read).

I’m really glad to see that someone else didn’t find the movie hysterically funny. I mean, it was funny, but just not the colon bursting good time I was expecting given the reaction in the ‘superbad rotten tomatoes’ thread.

Quite often I see the rejection of the low-brow as a desperate attempt to gain intellectual ground by folks with only middling smarts. No direct attack on you, Oblivion, but I think the truly wise eventually come to a place where they can appreciate humor, both base and brainy in equal measure.

Shakespeare didn't mind slumming for the peanut gallery and Oscar Wilde more than dabbled in smut. Dick and poo jokes are hard wired into our DNA, trying to deny their value is a fight that can't be won.

Yeah, he’s the one feigning intelligence…”Shakespeare” and “Oscar Wilde” references in one post! Wowzers, mister, Wowzers!!

You should do a George Plimpton impersonation, read your post aloud, record it to your computer, and upload it to share with the forum.

I'd like to know what makes the OP laugh. I too, would like to choose sophisticated and cultured comedy that isn't contributing to de-evolution or the end of human life as we know it.

Thanks. :)

It's called illustrating a point. Besides, I don't really need to feign anything. :)

Also, people who namedrop Neal Stephenson in their screen name shouldn't throw stones.

Exactly. There's this arbitrary binary that many feel they have to create, for whatever reason.

Btw, I miss your cat with the bonnet av. :(

I have nothing against low-brow comedies; they just don't usually make me laugh. So I don't really go out of my way to watch them. No big deal.

"...great films, with plots! Where you cared about whose ass it was, and why it was farting!"

Now, before most of you respond by asking "How big a monkey?", let me explain.

So I went to watch Superbad yesterday. The thing that really set me off was at the very end after the credits started rolling, when the
notebook with dick pictures
appeared. Now, I don't go to a lot of movies, but seeing an audience clap for a movie they enjoyed is customary, I assumed. However, once those pictures started appearing, it went from satisfied applause to roaring laudation. I'd say for about 30-45 seconds of hooting and hollering, with 'FUCK YEAH, BOYEEEEE' and the like.

Of course, that's not even mentioning the movie's other comedic efforts, such as people being spit on, a nerdy white guy thinking he's ghetto (I've never seen THAT done before), throwing up in other peoples mouths, etc. Maybe next time, the brilliant writers will do a movie where somebody shits inside somebody else's mouth. Mathematically speaking, it should theoretically cause 10 times the laughter. Hell, why stop there? These guys should seek out that goatse guy while they're at it.

The more and more I see people actually supporting this type of 'humor', suddenly, the theory of reverse evolution seems more and more plausible.

In the very least, I would hope that some of you that did find that movie hilarious felt ashamed afterwards. Right? Please?

Oh, well. Let me end this by saying fuck movie's shitty humor, fuck you for enjoying it, and most importantly..

Fuck yo, couch!

did you like transformers or spiderman3? just wondering...

Those were some hilarious dick jokes, though. Come on, a Tiananmen Square drawing where a dick is stopping the tanks? That's good stuff. The setup for the dick jokes was great and they were suitably clever or overly grotesque enough to work.

edit: The greatest minds who ever lived appreciated a good dick joke. I'm sure of it. Get off your fucking pedestal.

Whoa-ho-ho! Typo!

Just sayin, if you're gonna make fun of someone's intelligence, at least have your bases covered.

Haven't seen either of those yet.
