Is the average pizza in the US huge?

There's a new trend picking up with these pizza places that build your own personal size flash baked pizzas.

Wouldn't this take like 15 mins to cook.

OP is probably picturing something like this, which is a common pizza size in sitdown restaurants, brew pubs, etc. Can definitely manage on my own with no problems.

Whereas this is what we're talking about when we talk about pigging out by eating a whole pizza.

No. It takes 3 - 4 minutes. A tiny bit slower than Chipotle. They use a 700 - 800 degree oven and the crust is thin. Blaze is fantastic. They are popping up all over Southern California.

Nice beer choice. I love Boulevard BBQ.

I have noticed a social stigma where some think eating pizza alone is sad. That it's only for social eating like at a party or something. I don't get it.

Penny Arcade said as much where the one guy ashamed lay admitted he once ate pizza alone. I was like, why is that embarrassing?

I would say for most pizza chains:

Individual: 10"
Small: 12"
Medium: 14"
Large: 16"
Jumbo: 18"
Slices: 20"

with a few notes...

i. Individual size pizzas are only sold at sit-down restaurants. they're meant for one person to consume as a meal.

ii. 20" pizza's are cooked up and sold by the slice. generally only at lunch time and by fast food restaurants.

iii. Pizza sizes used to be 2" smaller. (i.e. Large used to be only 14") but over time standards changed.

Pizza delivery chains market their food as an informal party food for years and years -> food becomes seen as party food first and foremost -> becomes easy to stereotype eating pizza alone as a sign of loneliness or excess rather than just ordering a fast food meal.

Most pizza chains are 10" for small, 12" for medium and 14" for Large.

This is Papa Johns, Dominos, Pizza Hut, Hungry Howies, Little Caesars etc.

We have one in Brentwood, TN. Very good and pretty fast.

I can only eat a whole pizza if its thin crust. I could actually eat more than one probably. Thin crust just doesn't fill me up. :S

so it seems 12.5 inches is medium size on average in the US, most of you would agree that is totally normal to eat by yourself?

Pizza chains are almost all 14" large.

Don't know about normal, though I'm sure some people do that. I sometimes order a large 14" and eat half one day and the other half the next day.

We have a place near me that is really great. Best NY style I've had in the south since moving here from New England.

It was on the Food Network on Man VS Food because they have a giant pizza with over 11 pounds of meat on it...two people have to finish it to win. I've seen a couple of people attempt but never win...

It's not like Papa Murphy's. They build it for you and bake it. Another similar franchise is Pie Five.

Yeah we have Pieology in CA as well. They are all basically Subway/Chipotle for pizza. Pretty good pizza, better than big chains taste wise, but its a bit pricey for a smallish size.

Having eaten pizza in Europe, I wouldn't say the sizes are to different than what's in the US for the most part. Obviously we have a lot of joints that allow for bigger orders like Large and XL, or Costco/Sams Club with their 18" larges, but otherwise it seems pretty similar to me.

Typically in the US, people buy pizza as a group activity - 2 or 3 people go in on a pie, and split it. Eating an entire large pizza alone is a shitton of calories, and not typically the behavior of a long-living individual.

You can still get smaller, personal-size pizza - but it isn't the norm.

Sandwich thread? Sandwich thread.

Yeah most American pizza is not meant for one person in one sitting. Maybe small. Family of 3 buys 2 and still has some left over usually.
