Is the fatal frame series really that scary?

It really is quite scary. Very atmospheric too and the fact that you only have a camera for defending makes it stressful for some reason.

But yeah, big fan of the series, if you like horror games you should definitely play the fatal frame series

Extremely. One of the most terrifying games you will ever play.

You only have a camera to fight the ghosts with, and they will get right in your face. Worse, the game encourages you to let them; you deal more damage that way.

When i see this video or 50 other related youtube videos of this series, i am always thinking that this game is very creepy.

I never played this series, but i like to. Is it more scary than amnesia? Or is it overrated in the sense of being scared by ghosts?

It's got a lot of general jump scares... It is dripping with atmosphere, but I really wouldn't call it scarier than Amnesia. The first one is my favorite, but the second is probably the best game. The only complaint I can really level against it is the fact that the flow and feel of the game is pretty typical japanese horror affairs in terms of stuff like Ju-on and Ringu. Whether or not you like the game is probably going to be directly proportional to how you feel about the films like those.

I've never played it but the concept looks terrifying, because you aren't running away from ghosts, you have to actively chase them, and let them scare you to win the game.

Fatal Frame 2 and Amnesia are the most scary games that I've ever played. So I'd say yes (and the story is pretty good/depressing too. At least in II, I can't speak for the other ones).

Though like with eveyrthing, it varies from person to person. I didn't found them scary, but enjoyed them.

Then again, I know people that get scared the moment they hear the chainsaw in RE4/5 or when you enter the "other world" in Silent Hill games.

To me, more than scary; the games are "tense". In that you don't know what to expect as you're usually alone.

Reminds me that I reaaally need to play Amnesia.
But I remember that fatal frame 1 has been the one game that robbed me of my sleep for a few nights. Broken Neck ghost traumatized me xD

I only ever played the first, and that was before I really got into horror games and began to conquer my scary game fears.

So, yeah, the first game freaked me out. I really want to play the others at some point, but I've yet to get around to it.

I barely played Fatal Frame 4, it has some moments where it makes you kinda jump if you aren't expecting it. Like one of those dumb Youtube or Flash videos.

I picked up Fatal Frame 3 for cheap. How does it compare to Fatal Frame 1 as thats the only FF game I played.
Just as scary. Good thing you played the first game first. Direct sequel.

Atmospheric tension, you know, what horror games are meant to be comprised of. I absolutely love the series, would love to see it move beyond the Wii frankly. Fatal Frame 2 is still one of the most well rounded horror titles of all time.

In FF 3 you play as three different characters and you transition back and forth between the real world and the dream world, so it's not unrelenting tension like the first two games.

Still need to pick this up, unless North America gets the Wii remake.

Real world parts were pretty damn creepy.

I honestly wouldn't even wait. If you can find the X-Box version you will be floored by just how good the game still looks upscaled via the 360. To boot it had just as much if not more replayability than something akin to biohazard 4, so many perks and incentives to get through the game coupled by extra modes and unlockables. I really can't stress enough just how good this game is, it doesn't hurt that the art style is also attractive.

I played Fatal Frame 2 on Christmas morning after I opened it up and still nearly shat myself. Christmas morning.

If you are a fan of horror games in general I would say to invest in all three games. I was almost ready to buy a Wii when they announced part four, but it didn't come to America. By the way, in the small chance that anyone from Tecmo Koei is in here I would buy two copies of an HD Collection for the PS3.

I'm sorry GAF. I played Fatal Frame 4 momentarily and the beginning scene got me good. Never continued after the first save point.

Haha, yeah, they really were.

My wife bought the first Fatal Frame because she was into Asian horror at the time, but she only played it for a few hours before getting too scared to continue. So I took over with her watching and helping with puzzles. I still remember this one time where the blinded maiden crawled out from under a house when I totally wasn't expecting it and I wanted to scream, but my wife was on the phone, so I let out this weird strangulated hiss instead.

Fatal Frame, Siren, parts of Silent Hill 1-3 are the only really scary horror games out there. FF games are especially freaky because you are so vulnerable with only CRAPPY CONTROL CAMERA to fight off scary ghosts from nowhere!

I never finished any of the FFs :(

FF2 is the best in the series and imo the scariest, probably one of the scariest games I've ever played. I think it helps that it has the creepiest setting and story of all the games as well, which adds to the overall scariness of the game.

FF4 is a close second, although the setting for the game is probably the most interesting and exploring/fighting with the wiimote works really well.

I'd probably pick one of those, FF3 is a good sequel if you like FF2 but I feel like FF4 handles the whole multiple characters thing a lot better. Unfortunately, FF1 hasn't really aged very well and it's more annoying than scary, they definitely made a lot of important refinements to the combat system as time went on.

This pretty much sums it up for me. FF3 doesn't really get at you like the other games because ultimately, you know you'll end up somewhere else. FF2 and FF4 really made you feel trapped in a place, rather than in a nightmare.

I would agree that it's worth picking up FF2 for xbox or ps2, or FF4 for wii, instead of waiting for a remake.

I'm really into asian horror, but I can't play the games that utilize it's type of horror. The closest thing I can play is games like FEAR and such, but that's about it. I've wanted to get into Fatal Frame, Siren, and the Silent Hill games, but they're just too much for me unfortunately. :)

Even safe rooms aren't safe
The fucken washroom
. Also part of the scariness comes from how "clunky" the characters "run", it's barely a speedwalk.

If the ghosts attack you, they steal your soul. Without a soul, nothing is scary. So then the game is no longer scary. But then you have no soul. It's a catch 22.

I don't know if I would say scary, as much as I would creepy. Crimson Butterfly was the one that I probably had the hardest time with, played it in the dark when my wife was out of town and it was pretty surreal. Does not help that your only real "weapon" is a camera.

Yep, especially as you got farther and the nightmare world started creeping into the real apartment.

Yes, they're creepy as hell. No video game scares me, but the FF games sure do give me the chills. Alone, in a dark room , where everything else in the world is quiet, Fatal Frame is an experience.

Pretty creepy stuff. Fatal Frame 1 was also the hardest of the original trilogy so a lot of the fear factor in that one came down to struggling along with scant supplies. You really have to make the most of your healing items and your more powerful film, because you don't get it in abundance like you do in 2 and 3.

Finished the first three, anyone care to comment on how well the fourth entry matches up to the others?

How's the backwards compatibility for the first two games on the Xbox 360? I might go pick them up off ebay.
Never had any problems with either one of them.

And I particularly like the Xbox version of FF2 because it's the Director's Cut and they include a 1st person mode right from the start. I always liked playing from that viewpoint.
