Is the PS3 a good console for kids?

Don't forget that it won't be long until a 7 year old becomes a 10+ year old and the Wii game will start to look a lot sillier to them.

Really? :lol

Can you link me to that study?

The bullshit level in this thread is astonishing.

I think parents today are coddling their kids far too much when it comes to gaming. When I was 7 or 8 years old I was playing game like Metroid and Zelda... with no tutorials, no map, no sense of direction, and no idea what the fuck i was doing. Now everyone's paranoid that if it doesn't have cute characters or isn't super-easy it's "not appropriate". Pfft, give me a break.

Here's what you do: Get a system, get some E-rated games you would like to play yourself and see if they like them, too. Don't insult their intelligence, their minds need stimulation.

In a word? No.

The Wii is still the best console for young children and non-traditional gamers (ie. moms, girls).

Teenage boys will want a PS3. 6 year old boy? Give him a Wii, Mario Kart and NSMB.

My 12 year old Cousin emphatically says "Yes." He loves Lego Star Wars and Little Big Planet... And he loves Saints Row because "destroying stuff is the best". Loved Heavenly Sword too.

Oh right, he doesn't really seem to give a crap about PEGI ratings, but he does consider GTA a little too "mature".

:lol Did you forget the ages being discussed?

Shit, I'd be recommending a PS3 if this decision was for a 12yr old boy.

Breaks into song..."oh one of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesnt belong".. Your list is good, except..

I would not consider Infamous a game for a 6 and 7 yr old (which is who the OP is referring to)..... :lol
Personally, I think inFamous is very much the closest and safest approximation to SNES Mortal Kombat from our own generation. Its violent, and has mildly "adult" themes, but seriously? Its a superhero game with lightning action.

I got these family friends with 2 young kids one boy one girl and they love coming here and playing on it. They go nuts for LittleBigPlanet and a bunch of PSN games. Those were games I enjoy, there probably more if you're actively looking for kids stuff.

Long story short, yes.

What? Noone's saying that at all. Most of us are saying that from our experiences, more of the games these kids are choosing/asking to play are available on the Wii and not the PS3. Nothing about forcing them to play them.

Are there games they could probably play on the PS3? Sure. Noone's refuting that at all.

And bolded is the most important part.

If they want a PS3 buy them one, the Wii is a very different console if they don't want it they won't play it no matter how many GAFfers tell you it's the better option.

My kids 2 and 3 love some singstar on PS3. Other than that they play the Wii I guess, I think a 6 or 7 year old would have a decent time on a PS3, there are enough "family" titles that aren't based on shows that air on Sprout. Just think of what you were playing when you were 7. I don't know about the rest of you but by the time I was 7 I could play almost anything well enough.

I had a 5 year old neighbor I used to baby sit(and his brother was basically my best friend), and whenever I would watch him, he'd play 360(comparing 360 to Wii is the same as comparing PS3 to Wii, really) all the time. he played games like Lego Star Wars and Burnout. He could have also played the Wii, but he didn't find it appealing. I think it really depends on the kid. This kid would prefer the PS3/360 over the Wii. If the kid wants a PS3 because his friends have one, then you'll be doing him a great injustice by convincing his mom NOT to get him one. especially if the kid has played it a bunch, and knows what he is looking forward to. Younger kids can enjoy a PS3/360.

now you guys with kids should know this. these kids share information with each other on such things at school. they know what they want. just think back to when you were a kid...imagine asking for an nes and getting a sega. dont overthink it, just get the kid what he wants...

One of those kids in is kindergarten: why the hell are they suggesting those games?!? Naruto? You have to be kidding. Infamous? :lol

If you're getting a PS3, There is Kung Fu Panda which is pretty fun.

Pretty much. If the kids prefer licensed property games, then go with the Wii.

I know, i'm just making a general observation. I went game shopping with my mother a few weeks ago for those same two kids I mentioned earlier and she came back with probably the worst selection of games i've ever seen... because "they're 6 and the boxes are cute." I point her to a Need for Speed title and she says they won't like it because "the car looks too real." Ugh.

Why do you ask GAF when you should ask your kids? All children are different, some like playing REAL games and others prefer just playing around with their mates. The PS3 requires patience and some children don't have that.

My little cousin loves Mario kart Wii, he plays it a lot. But he also loves his 360 where he plays NHL 10, with the default controls, and he's pretty good at it. When he comes over he asks to play LBP, and a lot of other challenging games. The kid plays his dads fishing game for the love of god and I dont even know whats going on in that game.

My point is, either system will have enough stuff to play and you'd be surprised what they actually like.

If the kids' friends' all have Wiis, then go with a Wii, otherwise stick with what their friends have and what they want to play.

They may not be as picky about graphics and the such, but they will start to care eventually. :lol It's all about what they want and if they want to play with their friends or what their friends have.

Wii does have a much alrger library where "kid" games are concerned. But then it's only a games console that'll last them until they hit that phase where they're like "this is boring, I want [more modern] [hd] games" (kids grow up so fast these days.. lol)

If they go with PS3, the kids game library is a lot smaller obviously, but there are some as mentioned earlier in the thread. There is the additional benefit of having features that the adults can use too.

If you had to recommend kids games, there's A LOT of shit people can bring up for ANY console. The DS, PSP, 360, PS3, whatever...

But lets not fucking fool ourselves even if we want to. The large majority of children would prefer the Wii over those other consoles.

The question is, do you want to justify the PS3 purchase by finding kids game for it, or do you actually want to give the kids a console they'll enjoy more.

The kids are 6 & 7, by the time they want "more modern HD games" they'll have the option between the PS4/Xbox 720/Wii HD.

I don't think they specifically asked for it... My sister just said that their friends came over and said something along the lines of "How come you don't have a PS3??", and she probably wants to surprise them on Christmas.

But I'm now leaning towards PS3... it would be hooked up to the family HDTV so they could watch blu-rays, we could share PSN games, and the kids are already familiar with the Dual Shock controller, so it'll be an easy transition.

I know, right? :( Suffice to say, xmas & birthdays lost its appeal many years ago :) I get nice confidence boosters such as "you play with such childish toys, how will you ever succeed at life?" on a semi-regular basis.

Why oh why would anyone recommend a PS3 for kids aged 6 and 7 years old? I could understand doing so for kids double that age, but not for kids still in grade school.

The clear answer here is Wii. It's a great console with a ton of kid-friendly games.

I'd argue that the DS is the clear answer. My kids play stuff like Flower, flow, PixelJunk Eden, and a bunch of PS2 games on my PS3. There's plenty there for kids, so buying one won't really restrict you very much.

Here's a thought, ASK THEM.

You already said they have a PS2, i'm assuming they've had that for a year at least seeing as they're getting something new(since they were 5/6), so they already basically know how to use the PS3. All their friends have PS3's so they can swap games, maybe play online with/against them. The wand is coming out for PS3 so there will be plenty of shovelware they can get stuck into and plenty of games they can play as they grow up.

So yeah, it's not as obvious a choice as people are making out but like i said ask them "what would you prefer Santa brought you if it was a choice between these.."

Looks like you already know what you're getting.

Buying a Wii is considered child abuse in 23 states. Good choice. :D

Don't you remember when you were a kid? It doesn't matter if you give him a wii, a ps3, or a 360, they find the dumbest games fun. I freaking played Primal Rage on SNES for days when I was a kid. I played Cool Boarders on ps1 non stop. I mean seriously I'd say yes a ps3 is fine but completely unnecessary, since both a 360 and Wii are cheaper.

Have you proved them wrong yet? Just curious. lol

If all of their friends have a PS3, then the no-brainer answer is get them that. If all my friends had a PS3, and I got a wii, I would have been pissed.

Also then they will actually be experiencing games that may not necessarily be targeted towards, and who says thats a bad thing..

Another thing is that in my opinion, the PS3 is more future proof for when these kids grow older, and it is more of a family entertainment center than just a game console. I don't know if the family already has a blu-ray player, but if not, now they would.

Overall, I dont think the gap in number of good family games on the ps3 vs wii is large enough to justify getting a wii over a ps3, from the stuff I have seen from experience, most of the stuff is shovelware garbage

Did you not read the OP? The kids in question already own a DSL.

You have got to be joking.

Either a Wii or a PS3 will be fine. Both libraries have plenty of stuff for kids to like, though the Wii probably has a lot more.

Battle Tanks
Pixel Junk Shooter (not hard like the previous in the series)
Flower
Pain (maybe some questionable content)
Trine
Burnout Paradise
Namco Museum

All great games for kids.

This is a thread to help pick kids games. Not an open invitation to push your fanboy agenda. You fluffed it up, but its still disgustingly obvious. Try harder next time.

Speaking from (PS3-only) experiences with my niece (7) and nephew (5)...

Games the play (in order of popularity):
  • Locorocco Cocoreccho! (PSN) (They've sunk so many hours into this... Great 'puzzle'/thinking type platformer without having any real threats or dangers. Means they can just sit back and play around. It's cheap too.
  • Noby Noby Boy (PSN) (Good 'aimless' type game. They have fun going around eating things -- and each other -- and pooping them out. Multiplayer is a blessing here.)
  • PixelJunk Monsters (PSN) (The two of them can beat all of the easy levels and a few of the medium levels by themselves on co-op after a little bit of teaching)
  • SingStar: Pop Edition (We usually only play this when my other sister comes to town with her daughters, aged 11, 7 and 4. There's a small selection of kid friendly songs on the SingStore. The girls go for things like Spice Girls, Aqua, Britney Spears, Pink, and various Australian artists)
  • PixelJunk Racers (PSN) (Only really introduced them properly to this game today. They enjoyed the balloon burst race mode)
  • Crash Bandicoot (PS1) (Impressed they managed to play this -- it was their first 3D platformer -- although I guess I wasn't far off their age when I first played it myself. :P But yeah, they don't mind the jump back in graphics or anything). Biggest problem is it's one player, so sharing needs to take place. I bought Crash Team Racing recently so I'll have to introduce them to that too)
  • Super Rub'A'Dub (PSN) (The eldest likes this, but only for like 10 minutes or so. Youngest finds the tilt controls too difficult to master)

They also like watching me play Ratchet & Clank, but the eldest doesn't quite have the skills to manage the weapons just yet while doing the platforming. I haven't introduced them to some of the other mentioned games in this thread yet, like LBP or Flower.

I've also bought them EyePet for Christmas, which I can tell right now is going to be un-fucking-believably popular with them. Holy shit this game taps into all the right things. It's like a tamagotchi -- with your standard feed/wash/exercise -- combined with fun games, extreme cuteness, and augmented reality/interactivity. They are going to go crazy for it.

Overall, YMMV. The kids enjoy my PS3, but they only get to play it when I drive (700km) back home for Christmas or mid-year break. I don't know how different it would be if they had the thing on a permanent basis (i.e. whether they'd get bored of it).

Heh, perhaps not :) It's just that my mom would probably enjoy life more if she had live during the 19th century. She always goes on & on about the good old days etc as if she was 90 years old. Careerwise, they're both throwing rocks inside a glass house so to speak :)

But this is off topic. Go buy a ps3. Getting a hardcore console doesn't automatically mean they will be playing Manhunt or GTA. It's a matter of taste of course, but I would personally be more interested in the kiddie games on PSN compared to the competitors, if I had to choose. I don't think the Virtual Console is a good selling point (it's just OLD games xD) for a 7 year old in this day & age.

What games does he like to play on the PS3? Can you list a few titles please?

He's really into the Lego games, Lego Star Wars, Batman, and Indiana Jones. He's also into the Ratchet games. He too got into Little Big Planet for a little while, but I think the physics were too goofy for him to really grasp it. He loved the way it looked but I don't think it played like he had hoped.

Honestly though, he's been playing those Lego games almost nonstop since 2006 when he was 4. He just can't get enough of them. You can get those games on any system though, so that's not really make or break. It is nice to have the BluRay player though, if they have an HDTV.

Also, you can't discount the fact that a full controller for the Wii is $80. I think that adds significant cost.

If their friends have PS3's, you also can't discount the fact that that may be a HUUUUGE factor into why they want a PS3. If their friend's have PS3's, they can lend each other games, and the friends system is much better on PS3 than Wii.

I am no fanboy, I own all 3, and try to support them all 3 equally, I am just going by what I see, and I say that in this case the ps3 is a better choice than the wii, nice try though.

I would imagine for practicality purposes the Wii would be the easier choice. The controller is almost literally made for throwing about and the games range from simple swimming with fish all the way up to collecting stars with Mario. It's also great for parties and local play, and in particular Boom Blox would be a great choice as you can build and destroy stuff with it and it controls really simply.

Of course the PS3 has kid friendly games and simple-to-control stuff, but navigating the menus and sometimes waiting for things to install is probably going to be a bit frustrating for 'em. Having said that, Noby Noby Boy is the ultimate in virtual playground gaming for the kids and it's nonsensical enough to keep their attention.

Most predictable thread ever.

All I'd say is that make sure the family in question actually cares about blu-ray before using that to make the decision.

I'm no parent, but I think the other two consoles are more suited.

I'm not saying the PS3 is a bad choice, but I think the others are better for children.

Wii because of the amount of kid friendly titles

360 because of the superb parental controls. In terms of kids software it is a little better than ps3, but nothing significant.

Edit, need to learn to read better, 360 isn't an option.

Also if they want a PS3 because of friends, you should get a PS3. It is always more fun if friends have the same console.

Seriously it comes down to what they want. They've asked for PS3s, don't go and get them a Wii without making sure they won't hate it. The opinions of everyone here < opinion of your children who you're getting this for.

They'll pick up the XMB pretty fast, although haven't had to deal with installs or anything before (I intentionally patch everything up before I drive down).

(Just realised that another pro with PS3 re: my neices and nephews is that almost everything they play is a digital title. Means they can just flick through the game category without worrying about discs.)
