Is the PSP closer to the PS1 or DC in terms of tech?

I bought the Daxter pack a couple of days ago and fuck the visuals on this system are stunning. I am surprised Sony did this in such a small, portable package. I played Power Stone Collection, Daxter, FFT, and Gitaroo Man so far. Does anyone have the official specs for the system? I am just curious.

Thanks in advance. :D

Something slightly above DC I believe. I mean, you can emulate PS1 on the machine - it's well beyond that. DS is more on the level of PS1

I'd say it's close to Ps2 in terms of power. PSP has been out for about what, two years now? Some games, such as MG Portable Ops or Syphon filter have some pretty amazing graphics, so who knows what we'll see in another two years.

While were at it...

Is DS more.. or less... powerful than an N64?

We haven't even seen a game made for 333mhz systems yet, and we've already gotten to visuals like Crisis Core and CoL

Was the topic title supposed to say PS2 instead of PS1? PS1 doesn't really make sense since its a lot more powerful than both the PS1 and the DC.

It does some things better than PS2, and other things not as well as PS2. It's about on par with PS2 though altogether.

Seeing Crisis Core and God of War, I think the system is near of PS2. Probably it lacks raw power but I guess it has other tricks.

Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow is 333MHz I believe.

- Considerably slower CPU, less fillrate and some missing features in the rasterizer, less programmable.
+ Faster geometry, multiple extra 2d units, much stronger memory interface for texturing, some extra features in the rasterizer(including texture compression), more usable memory.

Closer to DC, but it's definitely not on part with a PS2.
It's also rendering at a lower resolution, remember. Not quite apples to apples.

Looks better than a lot of PS2 games >.>

God of War: Chains of Olympus has to be played in order for one to really appreciate it's impressive visuals. I had seen the images and trailers, but it wasn't until I played the demo that I was blown away - even more so than when I first played Syphon Filter or Daxter.

In the end, it's above DC but not quite as powerful as the Ps2...

Doesn't the small screen make games look better compared to say using a TV?

Very much so. I doubt the system comes close to a PS2 in terms of raw horsepower, but it can put out similar graphics at its native resolution.

Not really, since you have to look at the screen from so much closer it makes it easier to notice all the visual imperfections (tons of jaggies, low res/poorly filtered textures, ghosting etc.)

The PSP seems far more poly-starved than either the PS2 or DC.

THe 2.5D stuff, CV: Chronicles, Ghouls & Ghosts etc. look pretty poor IMO.

:lol That caught me off guard.

I've heard it compared to a PS2 in regards to strength, never had a dreamcast so couldn't say. (I was too young, OKAY Segata!?)

No excuse. You can get a decent starter kit for $30 on ebay.

oh yeah, definitely. video output to a TV is pretty fugly. Stuff that appeared smooth becomes a jaggy mess.

Not to mention excellent homebrew and the easiest way of putting it on the console. (DreamSNES is almost prefect, NesterDC is amazing)

The PSP is definitely DC+ in terms of graphics. The texturing isn't that good, but that can be blamed on the lower budget for the games rather than actual gaming power.

On the other hand the DS is like a PSX+ because it is pretty damn far from the N64 in graphics, it doesn't even have a GPU like the N64.

I'd imagine we could see games that easily match (or maybe even exceed?) late PS2 titles if such software was specifically designed around the PSP slim's 64MB in addition to using 333mhz mode as the default.

In other words, a game which could only work on PSP slims.

More like the ps2! I'd say Crisis Core looks better then 10 and 12..probably just me though. God of War: CoO looks pretty close to the Ps2 games except with more jaggies.

It's roughly equivalent to a portable PS2.

The PSP has certain advantages and limitations compared to the PS2 hardware, but they pretty much even out.
