Is the Sony and Insomniac relationship over?

A new Ratchet game just came out in November. I think any concerns at this point are a little premature.

No, actually. Tin Giant is working on the Vita version, and Insomniac has nothing to do with it.

Huh? Since when was Knack a 3rd person gun-based platformer? They're totally different types of games, I don't see why they couldn't co-exist on the same system.

They both fill that role of "colorful, mascot-driven" IP.

Supposing there is a downward trend in Ratchet game sales, Sony may not be interested in a big-budget PS4 Ratchet title this time around.
 
Despite the pedigree behind it, I really doubt Knack will actually become a franchise. I see one and done in that IP's future.

If anything, Knack should signal the official death of Ape Escape.

Yeah, insomniac left it in great hands. It should have been done already. I think the point even though I was wrong, still stands. Insomniac isn't finishing its current Sony exclusive due to third-party development.

Same here. Really disappointed in Insomniac for the time being, as someone who's played (nearly?) every single one of their games to completion, them being in bed with EA now is a turn off.

Mainly because Fuse leaves no good tastes in my mouth. Not a bad one either, I guess, but just generally "eh". They could be doing so much more. I want them to take the core of R&C and revolutionize it.
 
Insomniac hinted that they will continue to develop Ratchet&Clank games for Sony.
With that being said I think the company desperatly needs a new hit.
And FUSE will not be the answer to their problems, making a fps is not an easy way to surprise people or create something new.
They should have tried a different genre like action/adventure, unfortutanely they really want to stick with fancy weapon based gameplay where they think they're so cool....sales of their games prove people mostly don't care. I fear that FUSE might be the new multiplatform HAZE.

IDK, Sly and Ratchet were both on PS3 together, and Jak would have joined the party if Naughty Dog hadn't decided to do The Last of Us instead. And yes, there has been a downward trend in Ratchet sales (with good reason, some might say). But hopefully Insomniac is smart enough to see that people don't want spin-offs or bite-sized PSN games anymore, they want a full blown sequel to Crack in Time. I think that alone would get a lot of Ratchet fans who've lost faith in the series to come back.

Nah, you are still wrong and the point doesn't make sense. Whether Tin Giant has any record or not has nothing to do with it, Sony made the choice to have them work on the port. Insomniac did not choose who would work on it. And since it is not Insomniac's project (in fact I'm not sure if they're even doing any Vita development) claiming that they are not finishing Full Frontal Assault Vita due to working on FUSE is factually incorrect. Heck, just look at this statement they released last month before they were able to give an update:

"Insomniac cannot make any comment about the game," the post read. "We have repeatedly asked Sony and Tin Giant for an update to share with our fans. They have not provided any update we are allowed to share.

If that doesn't convince you then I'm not sure what will.
 
The relationship certainly doesn't seem as close as it was before, but it's not completely over. Insomniac has given strong hints that they'd continue the Ratchet & Clank franchise.

Hopefully that means they'll make a proper follow-up to A Crack in Time on the PS4.
 
Other then Quantic Dream Sony doesn't really have any known second party games coming.
I guess someone at SCE really doesn't want to do 2nd party development deals anymore?

Would not be shocked if a new R&C is in the works though. They just keep making them for some reason.


I could Microsoft signing them for something for next gen XBLA. Maybe they do another mutiplat game with someone other then EA after Fuse bombs.

But for me they just havent delivered the goods since since Resistance FOM and its hard for that mid level AA developer to stand out anymore.

Only the first Resistance felt like it had Halo influence. I miss it.

that's not a relationship.

that's EA+sony with EA driving where the games go. It could just as easily have been x360+wiiU.


sony probably killed resistance and at that point in time, the relationship wasn't sustainable for insomniac. that said, without the 1st party exclusive selling point to the games, Insomniac is going to bomb. and bomb hard.

I just assumed that by your statement you meant that Knack would replace Ratchet because they were similar games, but I take it you just meant that they were both colorful mascot driven IP's like Aquamarine said. Sorry to put words in your mouth.

I played Crack in Time before I played the original trilogy, and honestly I found the older games hard to go back to. ACiT makes a TON of gameplay improvements (spaceship sections, controls, hoverbooting, overall level design). The story thing I agree with though, aside from Qwark's allegiance switching in the first few games none of the characters really ever change much.

I honestly think you could play them chronologically backwards and not notice a difference in story or gameplay advancement.
 
Resistance can die in a ditch for all I care, but I'd really like some more Ratchet. Easily the best platformers I've played.

We still dont know about Ready at Dawm and Sanzaru was Lightbox'd / Suberbot'd before the game event released.


Super small teams like Giant Sparrow and Move guys are a bit different then your big 150 person team games which they dont seem to be doing with 2nd party anymore but yeah. I guess they do have a few 2nd party things cooking but nothing really big budget outside of Quantic Dream.
 
Well, the last few SCEA published Insomniac games have all been pretty big bombas, right? Yeah, I think it's over...

Insomniac is an Independent Developer and can work with whichever publisher they choose. Just because Sony has released a few IG games, and they're working with EA now doesn't mean that they're done with Sony all together. It's entirely possible that they're working on another game with Sony after Fuse ships.

And Fuse's sales (good or bad) will have no effect on IG's next game. It's foolish to think that a developer the size of Insomniac isn't working on their next game right now as they finish up Fuse.

Yeah I doubt Tin Giant has any clue what they're doing. I mean looking on linkedin they only have years of experience working at Insomniac Games, on the ICE Team at Naughty Dog, founding members of Xbox, working on DirectX. I mean their company name is never on the box so I'm sure moby games would show that they've never worked on any real games.

I'm sure porting a game to Vita from an engine like Insomniac's, which makes heavy use of SPUs, is trivial. Next time Sony should outsource it to Gaf to get it done more quickly.

This thread is awesome though, a lot of people who sound very sure of their knowledge and are so far off base.

-Every Ratchet game we've made has been successful.

-We chose not to continue making Resistance games, but we're really proud of all three games we made there and of the series as a whole.

-Fuse is coming along great, we're proud of it, it's a ton of fun to play, and working with EA has been good too.

they slowly went down in quality this gen imo. They were on par with ND during PS2, if not better. This gen they either didn't recieve enough money for their games or have lack of talent, but compared to ND they are B dev at this point. Or they became obsessed with going to 360 and quality suffered.

I still say ACIT is a gem, one of my top 10 games of this gen. R3 SP was very nice as well.

a bit of topic:Ru Weerasuriya was in that vid where devs talked about PS4. we know they are working on next gen game, and it was rumored to be PS4 exclusive ( first it was PS3). Either way, can't wait to see what it is, they said they looked at U2 as some sort of what they want to do/how to do. One of my fav devs around.

to add on Insomniac, I think we are going to get ACIT like Ratchet on PS4 at some point

It's not "over" but obviously nowhere as good as before. Seeing how FUSE basically went the generic route and their parting ways with EA in terms of their facebook game creates more worry about what will happen to Insomniac now that they're not under Sony's umbrella.
 
Is it also not possible that Ted was busy? Perhaps doing a "Price Check" on his current game?
