Is the Switch Pro vaporware or real?

there is definitely a new switch model coming. 100% sure of it. will it be called a Switch Pro? i don't know. will it be a "4K" system? i don't know.

the switch is over 4 years old now and all we're getting is a more efficient model with improved battery (2019) and a small lite model (2019)? i don't think so. we'll definitely see a new model announced this year or next.

Of course there will be a new Switch model, the only thing up to rumors and uncertainty is when it will happen and what precisely the new features/upgrades will be.

I don't doubt it's real. There's a lot of smoke, most of it coming from the business sector rather than "trust me" insiders. I don't doubt it's got a 7" 720p panel and that it upscales to 4K in some fashion (though whether we'll be lucky enough to get DLSS I don't know). I also don't doubt it's coming this year and that we'll start seeing something more definite as soon as it goes into actual production this summer.

Beyond these few assumptions, I doubt everything. Lol. I'm not even confident guessing whether it will be billed as a Pro model or a successor.

I'd hold out until September and keep playing games on your lite, especially if your main motivation is to play on the big screen. Either way, then you'll be coming into deals season and, very likely, the Switch's first real price drop.

Yeah, but the difference was very small and very few games even made use of the power advantage. I hope they do things differently this time but I really don't expect it.
It was actually pretty large. The original 3DS had a dual core CPU @ 268 Mhz with 128 MB RAM and 6MB VRAM. The New 3DS bumped it up to a quad core 800 MHz CPU with 256MB RAM and 10MB VRAM. The GPU was largely unchanged but still benefited by being attached to a way better CPU. Most games released after the New 3DS became a thing have considerably better load times and higher/smoother framerates than the original model with some games like MH4U seeing improved assets too. But resolution stayed the same and I don't think Nintendo wanted to make too many titles like Xenoblade Chronicles that were exclusive to avoid splitting the user base too much.

Seriously go compare Hyrule Legends on an Original 3DS vs. New.

OK, fair enough 🙂!

Let's hope the supposed Switch pro plays past games at like 1080p60 across the board. That would be awesome.

With everything Nintendo, I suspect the Pro will see the light of day but will be woefully less than what was expected at a higher price.
And like Nintendo, it won't matter a bit.

I have a couple of dev friends. It's definitely real but the specs aren't final. It uses DLSS to hit much higher resolutions than it could normally using conventional rendering. They won't tell me more than that.

A cheap (in production) DLSS docking station is such a perfect way to upgrade ALL old switches without any compatibility problems. Slap dat marketing BS about a 4k Switch on top of it and let the fanboys pay 200 Bucks each. ONLY problem is the RONA and supply problems...

Every generation of Nintendo handhelds has had a hardware revision:
- gameboy -> gameboy pocket
- gba -> gba SP
- DS -> DSi
- 3DS -> New 3DS

Switch won't be an exception to that rule. OP you should buy a Switch Lite since it's cheap and amazing, without a doubt the most pleasant handheld to play. Then buy a Switch pro for TV play when it comes out and you can find one (as it's gonna be hard to find in the beginning).
It isn't an exception.. there has already been a Switch lite. And technically a stealth revision to the existing original Switch.

I mean they tried the more powerful version of existing handheld thing with the new 3DS and it didn't work. Why would they do it again for the Switch?

Manufacturing reports had come in hot, one supplier had even mentioned about their OLED screen being used for the new switch on their investors call.

I expect the new switch to launch on at least this fiscal year.
Its important to note that that company isn't a Nintendo supplier, so it isn't additiomal evidence for the Pro. They are jusy absing their comment off the same Bloomberg report that we have read
I'm sure Nintendo will make a next gen variation on the Switch but I doubt a Pro model will be the prototype. Nintendo has never been about building super powerful consoles. There wasn't anything like it with previous gen Nintendo consoles. By adding a Pro controller, adding a larger micro SD, simply connecting it with a 4K monitor...it's a Pro at that point.
DS and 3DS both got more powerful revisions, and with DLSS there's even more incentive for Nintendo to release a new model.
I don't think so, not after 4 years.

What's more likely is a Switch 2.

At least that's what I hope Nintendo is doing, seems to stupid to me to release a "Pro" version this late in the game, but I guess it could work like the 3DS and not like console gens.

Still, I think it would be smarter just to focus on a successor and not a revision, I even know the perfect name, just call it the "Super Switch"
The train for a "Switch Pro" is already long gone, it will be a successor but in the same package (just like NES -> SNES or PSX -> PS2).
Nintendo also has a stable SDK and will stay in the ARM SoC Game, so backcompat will be a thing.
Its wayyyyy too soon for a successor. Switch sales are still growing so we won't get a Switch 2 until 2024 (holiday 2023 at the very earliest).

The Switch Lite is more like the 3DS XL or 2DS. It's a form factor change for the most part. Every Nintendo handheld except the GBA and Switch (so far) has had a more powerful upgraded version.

GBC, DSi and New 3DS are all more powerful versions of the previous models with some exclusive games but a good portion are cross compatible.

Consoles now get and especially handhelds always got upgraded versions, so it is inevitable. Question is just when will it finally be released.

Except, Nintendo just ordered 30m more units and continue to post record profits. There's supply chain issues due to the pandemic and a shortage of components. All this very likely pushes back (or puts a halt to) any "Switch Pro" well into 2022, at the earliest.

Supply chain issues and a shortage of components could indeed push a new model back.

The 30 million unit order wouldn't, since the Pro model would be included as part of those 30 million, and record profits is not a reason to delay a product launch.

Still 720P in portable mode is extremely dissapointing though. Makes me believe that the improvements will be minimal at best when all I want from the switch is a better portable experience.

I think its real but like Sony and MS Nintendo was hit by Covid and delayed their plans a little, there is still alot of window to announce it in the year be patient

Rule one about Nintendo rumors: Don't believe anything that Nintendo hasn't announced themselves.

I've been done with rumors since the pre-Wii era -- the frantic and incoherent whisperings of the true nature of Nintendo's 'Revolution'.

The way Nintendo is talking about their R&D expenses, this sounds like it could be considered a next iteration device. It will be almost 5 years for Switch about the time this new device arrives to market. I would also offer that it doesn't have to necessarily segment the Switch market, but it would also seem that some of their bigger upcoming games may not run on the current Switch.

They could follow an iterative model it's true, but I don't think any of Nintendo's upcoming games will skip the base Switch anytime soon. They'll wait until the model after the Pro to move on from the base Switch I think.

Third parties may however port games to the Pro that can't run on the base Switch.

Will Switch Pro/Super/Ultra, or whatever its going to be called support 120fps... I hope so, though I suppose Indie games only.

I like the idea of Nintendo returning to a 5 or 6 year console life cycle with the type of product line they have made here. Switch Pro? Nah, Switch 2.

My friends brother has hinted at a switch pro for a year and a half now. I have no other details to provide since I don't speak to him directly, but he's released a game on the switch and has been a dev for decades and has a solid track record on rumors that I'd be interested in.

It's coming or should have came out and it's probably experiencing chip issues just like every other tech company.

Come on, don't you happen to have an uncle working for Nintendo in which they trust so much to give important information all the time? I thought we all did.

Supply issues always plague new Nintendo hardware launches, doesn't it? I'd imagine it would be even worse if they launch a new Switch model before 2022 what with chip shortages and all..

People are still having trouble being able to get a PS5 6 months after launch.

Judging by Nintendo's track record on handheld upgrades, it is inevitable. I'd even wager there will be another upgrade or two after the so called Switch Pro.
I would LOVE a Switch Lite that can dock. You could just use a pro controller or a set of Joy-cons to play while docked. The Switch lite is a more enjoyable portable to carry around and play.

The switch itself, moderate improvements, quality of life. Bigger screen, Oled screen, a few bells and whistles. But nothing that breaks the pre-existing install base. Or, at the very least the minimal impact on the 80-100 million units out there. Nothing like a 32X or a new generation. Think more of the New 3DS, 2D, XL, XXL whatever iteration you want to use.

However, the Switch dock itself? sure, it's a perfect opportunity to introduce DLSS, 4K upscaling, significant upgrades that are also optional. I guess developers will treat it like Series S and X.

But when does the Switch, become an entirely new console where you have to separate the sales and insert a generation gap?

Nintendo has not transitioned well, the WiiU is still to recent. Nintendo cannot mess this up, so I expect upgrades without breaking the mold.

ppl have been making switch pro threads since about 2 weeks after the Switch launched.

its always "right around the corner"
Yea a certain youtuber and his stream has been saying it every Saturday night for at least 3 damn years.
"It is coming bro" "We have rumours of a switch pro in the pipeline".
STOP TRYING TO MAKE A SWITCH PRO A THING! IT WONT EVER BE A THING!!!
Is what i would like to say to them every sat. Yea Nintendo could do it, and it could be the 8k 200 fps unit we all wish for, but until i see an announcement by Nintendo themselves i wish they would STFU about it. Because they never have any sort of hard evidence. It is always just "trust me bro" and "hackers found this entry in the new switch FW files."
Not considering that Nintendo have been known to mess with hackers before.

Think a bit about.

There is nothing in the nVidia lineup for a Switch Pro... if it is even possible to nVidia make the new chip Nintendo needs to pay a lot for a custom chip.

Just assume everything has been delayed because of COVID, there is been too many rumors, hints for Switch Pro to not be real, not to mention new3DS was a thing so it would not be the first time for Nintendo

I just want them to show the games, Switch Pro needs good looking games to create hype

That is another reason. Nvidia use TSMC to make their chips. Who are going through a silicon shortage. So even if Nintendo got a new design in the pipeline. They still need Nvidia's chips, and considering they can't get flagship GPUs out fast enough right now, never mind some revision of the Tegra. Switch pro release date is looking to be 2025 at least.
