Is the Wii U making a comeback?

You're not obligated to understand it. Different people like different things. Yes, we get Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Smash, Metroid, Kirby, Donkey Kong, etc.. every generation. That doesn't mean each new iteration can't bring new and refreshing ideas along with it. I've been playing Nintendo's offerings since the NES and I haven't grown tired of what they do. Maybe you have and that's fine. However, I've had a blast with MK8, DKC:TF, SM3DW, NSMBU, etc... To each their own.

Anyway, I am satisfied as a consumer, but it's clear that the general market just doesn't care for a "tablet" controller that's supposedly an add-lon for their 9-year old Wii. It'll probably be for the best if Nintendo releases their 2016 lineup and then NX as to cut ties with the toxic Wii brand ASAP.

Just to imagine that the gamepad could become a trend and copied by MS or Sony makes the blood rush to their feet. Learning something! To play video games! Having to become good and develop a new set of abilities! Their world would crumble.

Well, right now Wii U LTD is not really that far behind Xbone. But yeah, Ninty doesn't have any games coming out to push a whole lot of units this fall or next year.

Even if it's close LTD numbers, the Wii U isn't going to be closing a 160k monthly sales gap with the X1 without MS doing something crazy (or Nintendo) for that gap to remotely start to become smaller.

The Wii U has some good exclusive games, but that system is dead as hell as far as sales and those exclusives aren't enough to bring it out of the grave that Nintendo put it in.
I didn't expect Wii U to sell only a fifth of what 3DS manages to do. Neither did I expect Nintendo to refuse to cut the price, and announce a new system that early. They don't look after a Wii U come back, their goal is to make money out of the situation.
The good news is, they still manage to release great games on the system. So enjoy your Wii U for what it is OP. Kinda like you certainly enjoy albums from artists that don't sell as much as more successful ones. That doesn't make your taste less relevant than others'. Just different and less widespread.

By video game financial analysts, it will be remembered as a giant misstep.
The reverence by fans will be a situation similar to the Dreamcast: a [by reputation] strong library, combined with a short, almost "tragic" lifespan. It happens in video games. It happens with movies (James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, etc). It happens in music (Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison of the Doors, etc). It happens everywhere.

Right, that's why I said Nintendo doesn't really have anything coming out to change anything. Like maybe if they had a new 3d mario, smash bros, mario kart, metroid and some sort of awesome new ip coming out this holiday and dropped the price to $199 they could catch up, but even then it would be close.

Even with MK8 last year, the Wii U was only selling like 60k. There's no way Wii U catches up to XB1 in monthly sales unless MS intentionally inhibits themselves.

I look for great exclusives and great third party options. I found both elsewhere.

I should really get back to playing my Wii U more.
I have a ton of games for it but I've started most of them and just never finished them. Bayonetta I played like 1 level of, Pikmin 3 I played a bunch of up to
, and Mario Kart I played through all the levels on 50cc and only did like one level on 150cc.
It's a decent console with a good selection of stuff available for it now, but I don't really see anything turning it around at this point. Mario Maker probably has the most mainstream appeal since Mario Kart, so it might do better this holiday, but I don't imagine it will be dramatically improved.
I hope the NX does have some kind of Backward Compatibility (or cross-play support) for a lot of Wii U games, but I guess that all depends on whether it has a screen on its controller (maybe offer it as an optional controller) or continued Wii Remote support.

It's not making a comeback even if it started getting one great game a week. Nobody would ever know, because the gaming media have no time for Wii U games that are not coming with a massive push. And they can't all get a push.
We've seen it with Zombi U, with Wonderful 101 and we're seeing it again with Devil's Third, all great games getting undeservedly low scores because someone didn't give them enough time for the review run. And I'm saying great games because I'm currently having a total blast with DT's multiplayer, I swear it might even be better than Splatoon. It's definitely more complex with all the military base premise. Yet hardly anyone's playing it, because it's getting a lot of bad press.
So there's no point in even trying for Nintendo. Can't say I'd be completely shocked if they packed it up after Xenoblade X and just moved everything else to the next system.

If you consider the day of a big release clear indication of a comeback, by all means state that case.

Umm... yeah, it has had a shitty release calendar. Nobody is disagreeing, but way to wreck the SHIT out of that straw man.
I have a PC for the majority of my gaming needs myself. That said, once you have the vast majority of options checked off some people like having other options.
Not everyone will have a Wii U. I'm just saying it's packed with great exclusives is all. Not gonna disagree that it'd be a horrible only system.

I already stated it in my post above yours! The system sells like shit, but it has added up to quite a library in the years it has been out.
In all fairness, you are right, everyone has a different definition for comeback. Some people think that high sales mean comeback, some people think games that they enjoy make for a comeback.

The Wii U is selling worse than Nintendo expected. It will be lucky to even sell half as much as the Gamecube. But Nintendo are still releasing awesome games for it. Its profitable for them. The company are in the black. They're releasing another console.

Hey, we're good. I've been with Nintendo a long time. Had some Game & Watch devices when I was just a wee lad, before the NES hit North America.
I've got a lot of love & history with N. Maybe this is unfair, but I just expect quality first-party titles from N. That's just kind of a baseline for me. N releasing good first-party games isn't a "comeback," it's what they do.
The answers to larger questions of market share and cultural relevance, where Wii U actually could use a comeback, have not changed, and I don't see them changing.
I'm not just casually knocking N just to knock them. I like N and want them to do well, but they drive me crazy sometimes.
