Is the World Cup too Euro centric?

Completely agree its a logistical nightmare. No win is guaranteed so you can't say definitively more European teams will qualify. Especially if they have to go and play in some of the places the other federations have to play.
You don't know for sure, but on average, that would still be the result. And there isn't that much randomness in the prelims.

And if you think making things more random because matches are played in bad conditions is good, I'm not sure I share this vision of sport or fairness...

I'd like to see some of these European teams play in La Paz or Mexico City.
Well, the cup in Mexico still had 3 EU in the final 4.

On a single match, I can see the result, but in a whole prelim, having a match in unusual conditions probably won't matter much.

That being said, I love seeing lesser teams for other regions and root for them. I just don't think fairness will help, quite the opposite.

Yes. Europe does have stronger nations on the whole but I believe the qualification process should have been changed. More playoffs between different continents should have been introduced.

Guess the changes for 2026 will please some.

I think the 3.5/4 slots CONCACAF gets is fair. We have way less countries and population than Africa and Asia.

India has +Billion people in population and can't deliver a squad.

Little Iceland (333k) all heart has stomped the scene, vooooooooooooooot, voooot, voot , voot

Population numbers mean nothing

Agreed. I'm not naive enough to think any changes will happen. It's interesting to think about though.

You'd have a point if asian or african countries would be remotely competitive.

Doing it now would just lower the quality of overall play and resulting in the same knockout rounds only that EU/SA countries would have a better goal aggregate.

Not really. If we look at who plays in the Quarter Finals between 1990 - 2018 we get the following results:

UEFA: 36 teams (64,2%)
Conmebol: 14 teams (25%)
CAF: 3 teams (5,4%)
CONCACAF: 2 teams (3.6%)
AFC: 1 team (1,8%)

Considering that 2/3 of the teams that reach this stage are from UEFA teams it think the current proportions are quite reasonable.

I didn't mean bad conditions, I was talking about somewhere like Azteca in Mexico.

Not a good way to look at it considering where those tournaments were played:

1990,1998,2006,2018 hosted in Europe
1994 hosted in North America
2002 hosted in Asia
2010 hosted in Africa
2014 hosted in South America

That world cup also had more than 50 percent European teams.

I just find it funny. If the Netherlands is melting down in Sofia and suburban France, imagine them dying of oxygen deprivation in the mountains of Bolivia.

Just looked it up. Canada won it in 2000 by beating Colombia. That must have been embarrassing.

And they only advanced out of the group stage on a coin flip.

The Gold Cup, everyone!

I'd be fine with that, but that won't change the result...

This reads like the same thing people said before 2014 and everyone said europeans couldn't cope with the climate in brazil.

The real test is Qatar. Are they still planning on messing up club football schedules to get this abomination to happen in the winter time?

No, it's different if you get acclimated. Brazilian players going from the comfortable confines of European cities to La Paz get hit by it, too. Go in for qualifying for a few days and it's going to hit you no matter what.

Qatar is gonna fuck everyone up. No wonder they want to play during christmas.

So you go there a week early and get used to the height. The same thing germans did when they went to live in super humid temperature in 2014. Just like in the NFL this is much more a psychological thing than a medical.

the level was fine as it was. maybe if an African side ever got past the quarters they might have deserved some more spots, because that is a real harsh qualifying process for CAF, admittedly. you'll get your wish anyway when it changes to 48 and we'll have way more mediocrity from all of the confederations.

If they could go there a week early, they would. That's not feasible with the FIFA calendar.

People have thought of this before.

I just checked and the german team arrived 10 days before their first game in brazil. That's more than enough to get used to the climate. I'd agree if it's a normal game where you arrive and play 2 days later but teams usually arrive early before tournaments.

I guess I have a different view point. Since I'm not from Germany, Brazil, or Italy I don't find it exciting to watch the same couple teams win every single time.

Teams can't qualify because they have a disproportionate amount of spots to do so. Africa qualifying is brutal in particular.

If you don't watch much international football outside of major football tournaments, get your DVR and FF button ready for the new format. That's all I'm saying.

I'd love to see more playoff games between teams from different continents

Ireland needed to beat Iran in a playoff to qualify for the 2002 World Cup and it was amazing

No, if it's Eurocentric because European countries usually excel at this sport but that's not even true because Argentina and Brazil are always top candidates for winning it.
Heck pick Uruguay, there are 3.5 millions people there but goddang they are good at football and they got 4th place in the 2010 World Cup.

If you are good then then you got on the top spots simple as that.

Just as an addendum, have you ever seen African Cup matches? The levels are spectacularly low akin to third tier stuff of European Leagues.

I'm sure it would. I wouldn't expect Greece, Ireland to beat the likes of Ghana or Ivory Coast/Morocco.

Did you watch Ghana in 2010?

In 2010 they got to the quarterfinals. Pyroclastic said past the quarter finals.

Being Scottish I have nothing to say on this topic.......we aren't good enough to qualify and that applies to everyone I think. I don't know the ins and outs of course but you get put in a group and you play to qualify. Seems fair though I am sure there are inequalities that I am unaware of.

Now if you'll excuse me I am off for a cry.

Maybe Africa would send better quality teams if something like an international football organization helped foster the game in those communities and stoked more interest by showcasing more of their countries on football's biggest stage.

Why do that when you can just let European clubs abuse young African players while they look for the next Eto'o?

side point : the European qualifiers via playoffs being seeded based on FIFA rankings is straight up bullshit and tells you everything you need to know about FIFA.

"bu bu bu we can't have the big teams go out!" :/

plus the arguments like "Well, do you want to see Italy at the world cup or a team like Northern Ireland?"

NORTHERN IRELAND! there should be no divine right to be at the world cup - it's sad that Italy maybe not make it in an unseeded playoff but this sort of pre-determined "lets throw the big teams a bone" shit is why FIFA are absolutely the skidmarks on an unwashed pair of pants of the footballing world.

I -hate- international football as it is, but FIFA are making me somehow hate it even more on a daily basis.
