Is There a Game You Play Every Year? Why?

Super Metroid for me.

Why? Because it can be speed ran, explored, animals can be saved that I didn't know could be saved before, shine sparks can be performed in areas I sucked to much to be able to perform them in earlier, and there are tons of collectibles, epic boss fights, and the game never gets stale. Perfection....Like icecream dipped in cherry at Dairy Queen. Here's another game like that, Resident Evil 4.

Symphony of the night usually gets a playthrough around Thanksgiving, courtesy of either my wife or myself. Mostly me these days, but my waifu went through a phase where she busted out the ps1 and trounced through the game for the umpteenth time.

Ocarina of Time.

My favorite of all time. I try to beat it every year, but I usually just get through a few dungeons at the most. For the future? Team Fortress 2 no doubt about it.

I play through Earthbound every year. Something I used to do with friends. We'd get together and switch off controlling and beat it in 24ish hours. I've continued to do it myself over the course of a week or so a year.

There is no single secret. I just fucking adore the game. I tend to mod the game and I vary each playthrough with ridiculous self-imposed restrictions. Most recently I played through the game with nothing but cowards. I fired every soldier that started with bravery over 50. Jagged Aliance may very well be the superior game yet X-Com: EU is the game I keep coming back to on a regular basis.

I really want more PC/Console games in this genre.

1x a year since release.

A few of my favorite games have backends that are still really hard for me though:
Link to the Past
Sonic & Knuckles
Metroid Prime (Phazon Mines)

Maybe doing these games once a year could toughen me up to today's games?

Chrono Trigger and Fallout (or Fallout 2, so I guess those two are every other year).

Why? Because they're goddamn amazing.

I also used to play Diablo 2 through every year, though I've been bad about it the past few years.

Would be good training for sure. I know I used to always dread going to Phazon Mines back in Prime.

I played Suikoden II every year for a span of 5 or 6 years, then stopped for a bit. I replayed it last year and am starting to get the itch again, so I'll probably fire it up again soon.

I only play Earthbound once a year. I also generally end up playing some version of Panel De Pon every year, but that's kinda different. It's hard NOT to fit in a few rounds of Panel de Pon at least once in a whole year, although typically it's thousands of rounds :P

Final Fantasy V. Which reminds me: RevenantKioku, if you're reading this thread, are you doing the Fiesta again this year?

Also, I have a feeling that Dragon Quest IX will be on the annual replay list in the future. I just love playing around with games that have customization like that.

Not really.

But im gonna come up with one anyway since there's no way you can check if its true or not, and it will make me look cool and like a bigger fan of the game than the rest of you.

right ?

I think I'm going to make ODST the game I play yearly. Something about it lends itself well to multiple playthroughs. I've gone through it 3 times since it was released.

Gyruss on the NES. The music gives me chills when I hear it. I always play until I get game over, then put it away and don't play for months.

Somehow I always end up replaying Wind Waker each November since its release. Eventually I realized I had six completed save games with the date around late November, each a year apart.

i used to do this with Fallout. Then i stopped because i felt i was cheapening the experience. ill save Fallout for my deathbed playthrough. Cause of death: euphoric bliss.

ha! looks like you're playing the jerk game at least once this year. ;-)

I used to play FFVI and Chrono Cross every year. But nowadays I don't have the time/interest to go through them. Though they are still pretty much my top favorite games.

I play one or two of the following yearly...

Yeah, I'm a total whore for LucasArts adventure games... they're quick, incredibly written, and remind me of when I was 10 years old and my dad purchased an external CD-ROM drive for our Macintosh LC (III?). It came with a CD-ROM that included full versions of The Secret of Monkey Island, Loom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I had never played an adventure game before, but within weeks I was trying to get my hands on anything within the genre; I was hooked. Ahh, memories...

Used to play A Link to the Past frequently. Hadn't played it for a few years but I revisit Super Mario World every few years and ran through it just recently with the wife. She went the overland route while I worked my way through Star Road. Good times.

More recently I get a hankering to play Assassin's Creed quite frequently. I've finished AC twice from start to end and AC2 1.5 times. By the time I'm ready to play again, Revelations will already be out.

I like your style.

I probably start a game of Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura once a year or so, simply because the character creation options are just fun to play around in. So much good writing just in those descriptions. How far I get from there varies, but it's always a good one to return to. Soundtrack continues to be amazing as well.

Super Metroid

It remains enjoyable and I use the game as a model piece on design done right. And it's pretty much the standard.

A number of them, and they're usually played in the summer when I have more time to myself:

- Mega Man 2
- Yoshi's Island
- Super Mario Bros 3
- Suikoden I and Suikoden II
- Arc the Lad I and II
- Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles
- A Link to the Past
- Majora's Mask
- Earthbound
- Terranigma, Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia
(Time permitting: Legend of Legaia, Chrono Trigger)

I am extremely fond of all of these games--I know them very very well from beginning to end, so I can get through them easily without having to stop and think or take a break. Not to mention that they're extremely fun experiences that I like revisiting from time to time.

Silent Hill 2.

It always serves as a reminder that, no matter how bad game narratives keep getting over the years, at least one game did it right.
This right here. Always find something new each playthrough.

I've thought briefly about the idea before, but never actually got myself to do so. If I ever get it started, it'll probably be A Link to the Past.

My friends and I still bust out the N64 and play Super Smash Brothers every couple of months. In our opinion, it is the best in the series. Slow paced with limited moves. We been playing it for over 11 years and we still see something amazing happen EVERY time :)

I play through these ones every year:

Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3
Sonic and Knuckles
Megaman X
Megaman 2
Super Mario 1
Super Mario World

Short and replayable, and some of my favorite games ever.

Like some internal force of nature I can't possibly comprehend, I just have to play Doom and Doom II all the way though at least once a year. Same thing with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Besides that A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Final Fantasy IX call out to me pretty frequently.

I've played through Half-Life 2 and the episodes every year since The Orange Box released. It's getting to be about that time again.

Other than my annual Christmas holiday run through of Super Castlevania IV, there aren't any games I play through on a yearly basis. Maybe Super Mario World, Symphony of the Night and Morrowind.

No way. This gen just has too much content, especially with PSN/XBLA/WiiWare and Steam. I can barely keep up with my 2009-2010 backlog let alone classics from earlier decades.

Sorry MGS1, it's just never going to happen again.
HD REMAKE PLZPLZ OMFG

REmake around every Halloween. It's still my favorite survival horror game.

Yes!!

The day after Christmas I start Super Metroid. Once that is done I play LTTP. I have played these 2 games every year since 2001. Come to think of it I try and play all the games I loved as a kid every year...

I try to get a playthrough of Max Payne 2. It's short and always satisfying. Sometimes I will use mods, but the slow-mo whore in mean demands that I play at least 1 game a year that contains that feature...and boy have I played some shitty games with slow-mos.
