Is there any reason NOT to get RE4: Wii Edition?

There is one way in which the Wii version sucks like the PS2 version. The cutscenes are movies instead of real-time, and there aren't movies for the alternate costumes. Playing as RE2 Leon? Too bad, not in the cutscenes. Playing as gangsta Leon? Not according to this cutscene.

Wrong.

I've owned RE4 on GC, PC and Wii - in that order.
The Wii version is worth your money... again.
1920 x 1200 with a 360 pad is my preferred version.

No.

The wii version takes what little difficulty out of the game that it had in it. The difficulty is broken. If you even want an iota of a challenge, just play the GC version again, or try the ps2 version.
Just play on professional or/and try a handgun-only run if you want to challenge yourself. The challenge was never to finish the game on normal.

Interesting. Never noticed. Where exactly?

:lol What a load of crap. The PS2 version featured cutscenes that were pre-rendered (using the GC engine). The Wii features real-time cutscenes with the exception of Seperate Ways, which look pre-rendered and are probably just the movies they used in the PS2 version. Since the GC version did not contain Seperate Ways it can't really suck compared to it.

The game was never overtly difficult, and furthermore it was simply not designed with the idea that you could aim all over the screen in the space of a second. To claim it 'breaks' the game is pushing it, but it's way easier than with either the GCN or PS2 controllers on any equivalent difficulty or 'run'.

I was far too entrenched in the classic control mechanics to enjoy using the wiimote. It actually felt too clunky and unmanageable to me.

I'll second the difficulty complaints. The original was pretty nicely done, but the aiming makes it too easy. And like 99% of all games ever made, it's clear as day that the harder difficulties in RE4 aren't as finely tuned as the standard difficulty.

I'd probably consider the GC or post-patch PC versions to be my favorite.

Um... It's true, what were you guys smoking when you played?

Do you guys mean to tell me that in your Wii versions, Ashley wore a suit of armor in the cutscenes? She rode the jetski at the end in her armor? Was that in your game? I don't think so. The cutscenes were pre-rendered, and it was only with the default costumes.

See it was the exact opposite to me, I felt the wiimote controls added a lightgun shooter quality to the game that just made it incredibly addictive and fun. I never played the GCN/PS2 ones, but I'd much rather have a slightly easier yet vastly more enjoyable game than one with clunky controls.

So the PC version works with the 360 pad without any patching?

I'm still pissed that I bought DMC3 off Steam and it maps the movement to the right analog stick of the 360 pad.

Seriously...what the fuck.

I have a reason to not get RE4 Wii Edition...

I don't own a Wii (yet)

Take that!

But yes, I agree it is the definite version of the game (played it on a friend's Wii), and any Wii owner and self-respecting RE fan should buy it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Wii controls the most commonly cited reason people use for purchasing the Wii edition? I hated them.

But they aren't the only reason. You get GC assets for the main game plus the PS2 extras.

I actually bought for the sake of buying it cuz it was so cheap. I was looking at my gamecube dvd case and was wondering does the Wii version have the extra stuff found in the PS2 one? The Las Plagas laser, etc? I wouldn't mind playing through it again actually.

It also has all the extras of the PS2 version plus the superior graphics of the GC version plus 480p Wide Screen.

It's also on one disc. Which is nice because sometimes (with the GC version) I like to play the main game and then play mercenaries, and depending on where you are in the game, can force you to switch discs.

The cut scenes on the Wii are in-game except for Separate ways and if you watch them in movie browser. The costumes are always the standard ones.

wrong :P

There is none really. It's the definitive version, and if you don't want to use the Wii controller, there's always the option to plug your GameCube controller in as well.

It works really well with the 360 pad, you just gotta know what numbers on screen = which buttons on the controller. You'll figure it out pretty fast.

As for DMC3 copy this:

#----------------------------------------------------------------------

[Controller (Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows)]
START = 7
SELECT = 6
CIRCLE = 1
TRIANGLE = 3
SQUARE = 2
CROSS = 0
L1 = 4
R1 = 5
L2 = 11
R2 = 12
L3 = 8
R3 = 9
L<->R = 1

into your config .ini

Also use Nvidia's 'Manage 3d settings' feature and force all the options like v-sync on.

DMC3 is best on PC believe it or not.

Playing through on Professional my second time through (third counting the first time through on the cube), still in the first chapter, Leon is defintely not wearing the first outfit during the ingame engine rendered cutscenes. I've actually seen them so much with the original outfit, that it is neat to see them now with his alternate outfit.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

For anyone who wants the extra content, the better graphics but not the better(Wii) controls, you can just plug in a classic controller or a Gamecube controller and play the game that way.

Loads of fun however you play it.

The cutscenes thing:
I remember this from when RE4 first came out, the gameplay model of Leon has around 5,000 polygons and the cutscene model had over 7,000. The same goes for most of the principle characters.

I haven't played through the whole game with Ashley wearing the armour suit, but it would seem to me(and this is just a guess) that there is no high polygonal model of the two PS2 exclusive costumes. Leon's gangster suit or Ashley's armour, because the PS2 didn't have real time cutscenes. Therefore in the cutscenes they just use the default high detail models. But the scenes are definitely in real time because I'm playing through it just now and you can see Ashley's cleavage during cutscenes, using the first set of special costumes.

I'm going to start saying cinematics instead of cutscene.

The way I understand it, the Wii version has more enemies to compensate for the "easier" controls, right? Wouldn't playing the Wii version with the GCN controls be MORE of a challenge?

I don't have a Wii and I already own the GCN version but I'd consider buying the Wii version when I do get a Wii for that reason alone.

Wii version is the definitive version. Wii controls immerse you into the game more, are way more fun, and far superior to conventional controller controls. It's not even a matter of preference...Wii controls are just simply better...I'd like to see someone alternate headshots between 5 enemies with the amount of ease and speed like you can do with the Wiimote...True, it does make the game slightly easier, but owning both GCN/Wii versions, I noticed that the Wii version featured more enemies on screen

From my experience with the Wii vs GC versions, it seemed like the Wii version had less ammo, but more money. The number of enemies and their difficulty seemed to be about the same.

However, the fact that you get a ton more money means that you can pretty much always afford to keep every gun you have fully upgraded at all times, so you end up being able to take the enemies down a lot quicker than you could have in the GC version.

The nice thing is that even with the improved aiming, Mercenaries still kicks my ass all over the place. I unlocked
the handcannon
in the GC version, but I'm nowhere near doing it in the Wii one.

You, you don't even have a Wii. My point is that RE4 was never difficult to finish and if you want a challenge you can challenge yourself in RE4 Wii as well. For me the whole experience was much more satisfying and I got my challenge too.

Even with normal costumes you can tell by the quality that the cutscenes are real-time. The difference between normal and SW-cutscenes is pretty glaring. Try it for yourself.

Plus what DMT said, this costume was a PS2 exclusive as well (just like the mobster outfit). Doesn't take away the fact that the cutscenes are in real-time.

Nope. It's THE version to get. Get it and ignore the others.

You can use a GC or Classic Controller with it if the Wii controls aren't your fancy.

Can you take off the silly crosshairs and replace them with the old supercool laser scope?

Well if you already bought and beat the game on the GC/PS2/PC yeah. Otherwise no, great game. Wii version is apparently the best.

I was curious about this myself. Being a new Wii owner, I was curious which one would be the better of the two(PS2, Wii). Wii version it is then!

Tristam said:

I'm pretty sure the game does it automatically if your using GC/Classic controller

definitive version, no way around it

Get it! Just played through it (granted, this is my first time) and I think the controls warrant another play through, on top of the fact that it is an amazing game. If you haven't played Separate Ways it's probably worth it as well.

Yeah, the Gamecube is more difficult to play because the controls are crummier. That's not really the type of challenge most people are looking for. Play the Wii version, unless you really do like the "challenge" of fighting against your controls.
Yeah, I hate when people say this. The Gamecube version is better because it has clunkier controls... :S

The crosshair looks out of place in screens and videos but while I was playing it didn't bug me at all.

If you have a good TV the game looks like shit is a reason.
I would think that if your TV can't handle an SD source all that well it's not a good TV to begin with.

That being said RE4 does show its age in a couple of aspects. There's generally quite a bit of shimmering, aliasing and dithering. Overall it still looks good though, even on my 32" Pana LCD.

I can't be the only one that recognizes how incredibly jaggy that game is. I don't know if it has to do with progressive scan or the wii or what, but it looks like jaggy shit.

Okay maybe they're in real-time, my point is that the alternate costumes aren't in the cutscenes, which is very disappointing.

Show me a picture of armor Ashley on the Jetski if I'm wrong.
