Is there any wine that doesn't taste bad?

Not that I've found. Almost every wine I've tried, I've found deeply unpleasant. I don't usually ever drink the more expensive wines, which are probably better tasting, so that might be part of the reason why. But every time I have had wine, it's left a taste in my mouth like metal. I need to wash it out immediately.

Something I wanted to ask for a while but never wanted to make a thread for it. I drank this cheap one called Barefoot and it burned my throat pretty badly. Are cheaper brands stronger when it comes to the alcohol levels or am I just not going to be able to enjoy wine? I'd like to give anything a try, so long as I'm not drinking something that tastes like rubbing alcohol.

Wine is not a universal category. Depending on the wine you have, it may be higher in alcohol or lower.

Barefoot makes a multitude of different wines, so without knowing the specific one you had (red or white, just to start) you can't really answer the question.

It's like saying you drank one beer and complaining that it's hoppy and asking if every beer is going to be like that.

Cupcake moscato

Very sweet.

I'll second this. Remember getting Cupcake for the first time at Katsucon a few years back. Been a fan ever since.

I will be drinking that tonight.

if you like menage a trois, try scott harvey wines

small winemaker, but often sold on wine.woot.com

scott made the menage a trois blend many years back, before he founded his own winery, and that wine has since been commercialized, but a lot of his wines follow similar taste profiles. specifically, his inzinerator is basically what the menage a trois blend is supposed to taste like
I'll give it a shot

Wine is delicious. I feel like being able to enjoy aND appreciate a nice glass is a great social skill for people with healthy social lives.

The OP might like a prosecco. Make sure you know which kind. They range from sweet to dry. We just traveled italy in the Prosecco region and I actually enjoyed it. I seem to find mostly sweet stuff in the states, but I italy it was mostly drier.

Some of my favorite wines are like 10-15 a bottle.

Wine is a beautiful thing.

A few things:

Wine, like beer or even tea, has a huge range of flavor and quality. Try more wines. Go to wine tastings. They're usually free at wineshops.

Wine was designed to be consumed with food. Sure a solo glass or two is nice, but wine should not be treated like cocktails or beer, where you consume them frequently without any food pairing.

I started loving wine when I started pairing it with food. Mostly at fine restaurants, if its in your budget, you'll get expert food and wine pairings. As you learn more about wines and improve your palate it will become more pleasurable.

And last, if you're from Anglosphere-North America/UK/AUS/NZ, your palate may be biased to sweet drinks, such as fruit juices, soft drinks and the like. There is an adjustment period as you educate your palate.

Wine is great and well worth the investment. The best wines could be had pretty cheaply.

Can't tell the difference between red and white wine?

I'm sorry, but your taste buds are broken.

Do you happen to consume a lot of sugary beverages and foods, by chance?

I know the topic may sound pretty dickish to people who enjoy wine, but what I mean is that is there any wine that isn't an acquired taste, and just has a pleasant taste? When I see people order wine in pitchers and such it always looks good, but every time I've tasted wine it has tasted horrible, and I just don't have the taste for booze. Even beer is borderline for me. I also can't tell the difference between red and white wine, which I think is the case for everyone if blind tests are anything to go by. It all just tastes like alcohol to me.

Basically, what I guess I'm asking is that is there any wine that tastes more like grape juice and not like an alcoholic beverage, which is of course what they are? Or should I just stick to grape juice? Because I really do like grape juice.

Can't tell if the OP is actually being serious here.

Usually the only time I have wine is if my girlfriend buys a bottle and I have some of that. Maybe we just have different tastes in wine and that's limiting my exposure. She usually goes for the 10-15 range as well.

I've found that wines will increase in quality, but it's more of an opportunity cost issue. Are they much that better? I would say no. I've had some 100-200 wines too.

Bevmo's buy one get one for $.05 is a great time to try stuff.

As others have said, pair it with food. Next time you get a steak, try a more robust wine like a cab or Zin. Go get a fruity pork dish and try a pino. Get fish and try a chard.

i don't drink soda or eat candy. most days i only drink water, with maybe a glass of milk. why?

Because I notice that people who consume a lot of fast food or sweet foods have palates that do not support subtlety.

This stuff... Red wine with spices.

It's seasonal and really can only find it in Michigan but I'm visiting for the weekend and stocked up.

You can warm it up too.. I want to crack one open now

Not sure if you can get this outside of Japan, but my favorite drink is plum/apricot wine. It's called "umeshu" and has a veery sweet taste. It doesn't taste like typical wine, and people who don't like the taste of alcohol usually likes umeshu a lot. Of course it comes in different thickness. It's best enjoyed with ice cubes and you can simply "play" with the flavor by letting the ice melt a little.

A lot of good suggestions here for getting folks into something sweet and pallatable.

Seems GAF has a lot of wine fans, so I made us a thread to share and discuss our favorites.

Rice wine, or sake.

One of Dad's Japanese work colleagues brought back some clear wine for him, still in the fridge, its a potato nased wine. Its smooth as, never had anything quite like it, really good stuff.

Sake tends to be very much like rocket fuel though, that shit will fuck you up.

OP cant tell the difference between red and white? Calling bullshit on that.

Blasted Church is a local BC winery and the Hatfield's Fuse 2013 is quite yummy. I don't drink much, so this was a nice not too heavy wine to have during summer with friends.

Oops sorry bout the image size!

If you like sweet grape juice but want something to sip I'd say go with a honeyed dessert wine.

Or you can go Sangria or even 50/50 coke/wine mix is like a poor Sangria that tastes great. You can use cheaper wine this way.

Eventually you'll probably acquire a taste for it and enjoy it on its own.

You'll never aquire the taste for it if you don't just drink it whether you think it tastes good or not. So just drink it until you start liking it. It sounds ridiculous, but it will happen. You're taste buds will no longer get hung up on the bitterness and alcohol, and you'll be able to appreciate the actual flavors. Same goes for beer, coffee, cheese, ect....

If we're talking reds start with a blend like Apothic Red or something. For whites start with a Sauv Blanc. Don't be afraid to drink wine chilled either.

While wine tasting is mostly bullshit, there is a difference between white and red. It would be like confusing Vodka and Gin or Pilsner and Stout.

How old are the people in this thread who say they don't like any alcohol? A lot of young people have problems with stronger tastes found in things like olives or cheeses, as well as alcohol.

For someone who doesn't like wine a $100 bottle can taste a lot better than a $10 bottle

I don't agree, it's only the super cheap stuff that's vile and the decently priced ones are the most accessible. I don't drink a lot of $100 wines but the times I've had they've been more peculiar than $20 ones.

I have tried to find a wine I can enjoy with my girlfriend, but they all taste like burnt plastic to me. I have settle with letting her drink the wines and I will stick with the beers.

i have been to many family gatherings and events over the years and have never been able to stomach whine, liquor, beer, etc. it all tastes like piss and poison to me, even in my youth. so much so i always ask myself how other people even start drinking, and think they are lying to me when they say it tastes good?

i guess its just one of those things? i know i am addicted to soda, i only drink diet caffiene free stuff and it doesn't really taste good compared to many other drinks. all i can think of is the bubbles but don't understand why i can't just let the shit water go completely.

I have to try that poor man's Sangria some time. It just sounds nasty.

I normally really don't like wine.

That being said, Ice Wine is delicious.

Unfortunately, it is expensive (the one I get is €60/$75(ish) for a bottle that is fairly small).

I've never really been a wine fan either. It's the fermented//spoiled aspect of it that gets me. I tend to avoid those types of foods. Some white wines aren't too bad, but red wine just comes off as rotten grape juice to me most of the time.

As much as a beer snob as I am, the inverse is true for me about wine. The cheaper it is the better it tastes to me.

Nothing like a liter of white zinfandel for $8.

Sounds like your palate is biased toward sweet drinks since you say you have a soda addiction.

You'll need to take time to adjust it. Or just don't drink honestly. It's fine to abstain. No need to force it.

I'm okay with white wine, it's at least drinkable. Whereas all red wine tastes like vinegar to me.

Port wine is godawful. It tastes like someone put sugar in a bottle of vinegar.

Like that episode of Mr. Bean.

I'm drinking a serendipity from new glarus right now. It isn't what you're looking for, but it's exactly what you want.
