Is there anything Metroid Other M does better than the Primes?

Pretty much everything, really. Prime and Prime 2 have awful story/backstory/canonical relevance. Other M has a great story, a good backstory and actually has relevance to the Metroid canon. It's also got much better voice acting than the other two, not to mention characters. Prime 1 and 2 pretty much just have Samus and Dark Samus, which is... well... not a lot to work with. Other M also trumps it in user-friendliness. I know lots of people who dropped Prime 1 because of how incredibly hard it is to navigate. Other M fixed this with a handy map.

Really don't get the hype for the Prime series. Other M is so much better in pretty much every respect. Thought people would realise it was just overrated once Retro revealed themselves as awful developers with DKCR. Waggle to roll? Really? The same people who made the 'amazing' Prime games?

Sorry, I should have clarified that by story and narrative I also meant exploration and setting (and certainly no more dumb authorizations), but my mind was focused more on the actual core gameplay itself. I honestly think the linearity is the LEAST thing wrong with Other M.

Edit: Wow, noffles has got to be trolling... just wow. Didn't know Sakamoto was on GAF.
 
Seriously though, Prime 1 and 2 are amazing and Other M is a pile of dogshit I paid £35 for.

This is a tired argument, for GAF, for the Internet, and probably Nintendo themselves.

Put simply: Other M succeeded in making Samus into someone else.

For better or for worse is up to you to decided. Personally, I wasn't pleased.
 
the metroid prime games were good. metroid other m was pretty good too. i really don't get the insane hatred for other m, the gameplay was pretty unique and interesting and it reminded me more of the original metroid than prime did

The only thing I'm gathering here is that it's a shame that Other M is considered canon.
 
Okay it's been awhile since I've played Other M so I may not be remembering this right. But I remember really liking the way the camera interacted with the environment. Like how it was essentially a 2D game but the camera moved in such a way that it didn't really feel like it. You had fully 3D environments that were traversed mostly in a 2D manner, but it didn't feel like just moving left to right. I know there were full-roaming 3D areas as well but I mostly remember just 2D stuff.
 
Other M also did fanservice better than the Prime games did, a key element of Metroid that has been in every game to date.

Other M's core gameplay is just more attractive to me. It's much more in line with classic Metroid outings. I didn't care about the authorization jazz, as games tend to have a way to prevent you from using certain abilities based upon progression. Also didn't mind the remote only control scheme. Would I have appreciated analog control? Of course, but it wasn't in the cards, sadly.

But Other M's story is garbage, hidden picture segments are garbage, first person missiles are garbage, etc.

Other M is great minus the story, first person detective work, and some of the art direction.
 
Metroid Prime is glorious. I don't see why people keep saying the CG cutscenes for Other M, they look cool but the way Prime told its' story was so much better. It was through exploring the world and reading all the scanned objects and enemies. You gather so much from all of that, it's amazing and subtle. Nothing that needs to be in your face about it. I guess the way Samus looks, face wise is better in Other M? Can't really say anything other than that. Those weird heels on her zero suit were stupid.
 
The sense of agility and combat. The Prime games get kind of annoying towards the end with its more complicated battle mechanics. A lot of the enemies become annoying bullet sponges and you're switching weapons too much which can make battles too laborious. Metroid games usually overpower the player, making everyone but the bosses complete cakewalks by the game's end. Other M follows that progression and it has some amazing boss fights. You get to see and control and acrobatic Samus which is a pleasure.

Those are the areas in Other M excels further than the Prime games. Well that and storytelling but the Prime games (and the series in general) are horrendous in that department. It's not even worth mentioning.
 
Wow. Some really strong feelings in here. I have Other M waiting to be played at some point. I have the first two Prime games for the GC but have never played either one. My Metroid history is Super Metroid, Zero Mission, and Fusion. I've absolutely loved all of them for different reasons.

Dingdingding. This is the one thing. Samus is a delight to control. Its too bad its wasted on a mediocre at best game with a shitstain of a story.
 
I dunno. I had more fun controlling Samus in Prime than any other character in a first person shooter I can think of outside of maybe the old twitch shooters. Also one of the few games where I dont hate precision jumping in first person.
 
Might have to play Other M next with all of you guys talking so badly about its story. Hmm. In reviews and videos, it looks like a fun game to play.
