Is there anything that didn't go downhill after the early 2000's?

The only thing that went down the shitter and has yet to really recover is the economy. Everything else is generally better IMHO.

The Wire didn't exist before 2000 so I can't say TV got worse.

The PS2 also came out in the 2000's i.e. GOAT gaming console imho. Gaming certainly didn't get immediately didn't get worse. I guess you did say "early" 2000's though so maybe it's inclusive

Kids shows really appealed to me when I was a kid. But these days... kids shows really don't appeal to me (must be the quality).

Also, when I look back and select the very best TV/Film/Music from an entire decade, it doesn't seem to compare with what is on TV this evening between 7-8pm. So, there must be declining quality.

/proof

I think the dotcomburst + 9/11 and aftermath, just really dimmed the 00's after the 90s.

i mean we started the 00s with dotcoms bursting, then 9.11, then iraq, then the housing bubble.

the 00s just sorta sucked.

world of warcraft was a watercooler for awhile tho.

I'm really glad I got to experience the glory days of Nickelodeon. I feel sorry for kids these days that didn't get to experience prime Spongebob.

I don't subscribe to that bullshit. Put a little effort into the stuff you claim to enjoy and you'll find some new, creative, an inventive people creating content that invalidates what you're pushing.

TV got soooooo much better. All we watched on tv in the 90s and before was pure garbage.

You sound depressed.

That's true. It was a hard decade, and it's going to be even harder for the West if the decline continues. I loved the '90s, but that's also because I grew up in that decade. Who can hate on Sega Channel?

Having said that, there's plenty of good to be found. Computer technology develops, medicine continues to develop, and technology continues to develop. There is absolutely a lot of innovation going on, and that's going to grow as globalization and information networks continue to tie people together.

with the growth of the internet, there is literally more exposure to games, tv, movies and music than ever before. You can find and access music or games that some random dude in his basement made 2 weeks ago. If you can't find anything you like, you are just hopelessly blinded by nostalgia. I'd much rather live now than 20 years ago where MTV, radio, the major networks and major game publishers decided what I got to listen to, play and watch.

Anyone who thinks TV in the 90s was better than from 2000 on is literally insane. TV has overtaken film entirely in the realm of comedy.

Portable handheld technology is a million times better as well.
What TV show in the 90s was better than Game of Thrones? Full House?
X-Files. :P

but then Vince Gilligan went on to make Breaking Bad so at least something got better.

cell phones

The phones themselves have gotten better, but as a result, people have gotten worse.

Prices and the stock market?

But seriously, with the internet, quality for films, products, and services have gone up because of word-of-mouth. Thanks to amazon and yelp reviews, people are becoming smarter consumers.

LOL, you must be very young.

Metal music has remained strong.

Music and TV didn't go downhill at all.

There's still a lot of good music now. It's just that you aren't going to find it if you rely on the radio.

Superhero movies got a hell of a lot better.

Publishing barriers are disappearing, so indie games (hell, indie anything) are getting more exposure, increasing in quality, and are more accessible.

I also think we have greater access to music. Think of YouTube. Even if the audio quality is not great, think of the access you now have to so many different genres, so many different artists, and from music all over the world. Whether you want to listen to folk music from Albania or Hip Hop from New York. You have access to it all.

I personally think that's wonderful.

Popular music has been shit since the conception of music. Don't try and cloud reality with nostalgia.

It's not nostalgia. "Popular music" as in new music you'd find on the radio and on MTV did not used to be all 100% crap like it is today. I still sometimes listen to music that would be playing on the radio or on MTV in the mid 90s. I seriously doubt 15 years from now I'll be saying the same about music on the radio today. The music industry landscape has changed dramatically over the past 15 years, and that is part of it.

Not only have things not gotten worse, but access to everything has gotten even better. You can go on youtube and watch whatever 90s show you want on demand instead of having to wait for it to come on or record it with a VHS. You can download almost any video game on demand and play it usually with improvements like online (and most of them you can do it legally!) or go on ebay and buy practically any video game in history.

Now is pretty much the best time to be alive ever as far as access to pop culture is concerned.

TV is shit now days.
Popular music is shit too
Movies more crapola
Games..meh...I haven't played any since I graduated college in 2005

Someone probably said the exact same thing in the 90s.

There are a crap load of great shows, popular music isn't the only kind of music out there, and there are a lot of great movies.

What was so great about the late 90s / early 00s? I heard this shit a bunch, but get fucking over FFVII, jesus fucking christ.

Whenever I need to remind myself of crap music, I think of the the state of "alternative music" during that time.

optimism, being 8 to 18 in the 90s was an awesome time, wrestling was hot, gaming was hot, pc gaming was hot, the economy was hot.

everything is terrible in 00s.

Late 90s and early 2000s had some of the worst music ever. Coming off an artistic movement, and going into a shit movement lead by Creed, Matchbox 20, Shinedown, Puff Daddy, Spears and all that other bullshit.

the late 90s/ early 00s were the low point of human civilization.

Well, the 80s were pretty bad too.

Well if you were a 3rd grader during this time and limited to bike rides, Seinfeld, and bad MTV, I could see this. But there was some really good stuff that just started kicking off. Things got off with a really good arc, that we really expected to just take off into the sky. Unfortunately the IT bubble was blown up, popped, then later the real estate bubble was predicted and popped. All this stuff happened in the financial section, but caused the rest of the world to slowly turn like warm ice cream.

I was there man, I know, I played pogs, I had some Ninja Turtles man. But if you look back, we were sold a bunch of cheap shit with a lot of screaming bad rad dudes who were numbskulls. You can apply that to Bop-It just as much as shit like Linkin Park.

EDIT:

And how can I forget "You Don't Know Jack! Millenium Edition". That almost single-handedly describes everything that was wrong with that time period.

You were a kid (I'm going to guess 8-11) in the early 2000s. You aren't now. Life sucks that way.

The good news is that by the time you're a little older, you get some perspective and are able to judge stuff a bit more holistically.

Do people ever look at themselves when making statements like this and say "wow, I've turned into the same jaded asshole as my parents and grandparents before me, longing for the good ol' days out of my crippling fear of a changing world?"
