Is TPS the best genre ever?

For me it is...

My favorite gaming genre is TP shooter/action/adventure/stealth (i'm probably reaching with stealth). Which is why Uncharted is one of my favorite franchises ever and Chaos Theory is one of the most satisfying gameplay experiences I've even had and TLOU hit so right at home with me, etc., etc.

I just love to see the character I control on screen so I can appreciate all the animations and mechanics that most games in this genre have to offer. I also feel like I have a better sense of control when I'm playing this types of games and, strangely, I feel more immersed playing this genre, than any other.

Which genre YOU think is king and why?

EDIT: Removed Batman AA as I might confuse people and make myself look stupid by adding it. ;)

Platformers and their variants.

Nicely designed ones have a ton of replay value, and some of the variants have some excellent adventuring aspects.

Whatever Zelda is

...also, RTS games. I miss Ensemble.

I like the mixture of adventuring and puzzles in Zelda and games similar to it and I enjoy building up bases in RTS games (unfortunately, the genre seems to be moving away from that).

I don't know how seriously I should take this thread.

SHMUPs and Action are best, though.

EDIT: Are we counting Battlefront?

platformers? really? i guess different strokes

I like rich RPG worlds and stories, but I also like shoot mans, the perspective is not particularly important. RTS is good too.

Batman is not a Third Person Shooter.

Fixed it.

Meant third person shooter, action, adventure or stealth which most of the time are combined with the exception of stealth. Although most third person games are implementing stealth even if it's as an after thought.

Bottom-line I mean TPS.

I vastly prefer third person to first person... but best genre? Turn based strategy, man! Civ and XCOM could carry a person for 8 decades. Maybe 9.

I like third person shooters. I HATE third person cover shooters though. Worst new genre ever. Other than gears of war 1 mutiplayer. That was rad. Mostly everything else is quite awful.

Not sure about shooter, but third-person games for life!
I cannot get into anything first-person; I never feel like 'I am the character', just stop it with that perspective until VR takes over. :p

No fucking way. I like TPS mechanics but I don't like any games centered around them, except for UC and that's only because of the story and platforming/quiet parts. Maybe UC fans will probably relate to feeling worn out by the shooting at certain points.

MGS, classic Tomb Raider and GTA are great examples, three of my favourite series that have TPSing but aren't solely about that.

Explains why I couldn't get into Max Payne 3 at all.

In general I prefer the Immersion first person gives for shooters. Third person is definately better for stealth, 3D platformers and other stuff.

Forgot about RPGs because I don't play them too often.

Yea, I don't play turn based as much anymore (since they mainly only come out on handhelds and I don't own one =/ ) but I think games like Mass Effect, Dark/Demon Souls, Skyrim, Witcher, FFXV/KH, etc. are only going to get more popular as systems get more powerful. They have the most room to grow.

God no. There are only a handful of third person shooters that I like. I much prefer side scroller shooters, FPSs, or even on-rails shooters.

As long as the camera angle is good then they are a blast. MGR is one of the worst games I have played mainly because the camera angle was so shitty. What is the point of having it so that you sometimes can't see your opponent because they are standing right in front of you and Raiden is blocking the view. So shit.

Best genre is either RPGS or Platformers.

Nope. Lots of good TPS, but the genre doesn't do much for me overall. I'd place platformers, FPSs, and character action games ahead of it.

As much as I want to say platformers because of SMW (favourite game ever), I would have to say that the FPS is the best genre, despite the over saturation. Platformers have only been done REALLY well by Nintendo in my opinion, were as the FPS has been perfected and revolutionised by many different developers.

Halo: CE, Halo 3, Bioshock, Half Life 2, Goldeneye, Portal, and CoD 4. Plus all the classics like Doom and Marathon. There are just far too many really good FPS games.

Grand strategy.

Map games forever!

For me, yes. I wish there were more more TPSs of the same calibre as Vanquish, Space Marine, and Gears. Hell, DMC, Bayonetta and Batman AA were fantastic in third person.

Somehow I read TBS and was pondering about the wonderfulness of games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Valkyria Chronicles.

Not that Turn Based Strategy is my favourite genre, but boy does it have some addicting games.

my favorite has always been the platformer genre. it's not just that a platformer with good level design can be so rewarding, it's the sheer variety in what can make level design in a platformer good. you have your skill-based level design in stuff like rayman and super meat boy. there's exploratory level design (which also tests your skill, but is more about you thinking outside the box) in games like mirror's edge and super mario galaxy 2. there's some platforming that's puzzle-based like in the ratchet & clank games. there's games made purely with spectacle in mind like limbo. there's a little something for everyone. i fucking love it.

I actually think it's one of the worst genres to date, considering it's plagued with fundamental issues with no solutions thus far (camera, FOV, controls, etc). The gunplay is also generally weaker than FPS's. That's not to say there hasn't been some great TPS titles, as many have eagerly listed.

Can you elaborate on those issues? Which is your favorite genre while you're at it.
