Is TPS the best genre ever?

Action Adventures like Zelda, Metroidvanias, survival horror, etc
They usually have to be strong in atmosphere, while mixing a good variety of gameplay elements from exploration, over puzzle solving to combat, etc, without one certain aspect going overboard or outshining the rest like in other genres.

For me it is...

My favorite gaming genre is TP shooter/action/adventure/stealth (i'm probably reaching with stealth). Which is why Uncharted is one of my favorite franchises ever and Chaos Theory is one of the most satisfying gameplay experiences I've even had and TLOU hit so right at home with me, etc., etc.

At first I was like all "Did this guy through Uncharted into the TPS genre?!?!"

But then I read. Carry on.

Fighting and RTS are better to me. Shooters are too simple

These are, by far, the best genres for viewing. StarCraft Broodwar was a real sport for over a decade in Korea, and the FGC has been super hype with the SF4 series for 5 years now. I know MOBA / ARTS is now popular to watch too, but as a genre it is still very limited in selection.

For me it's easily platformers, especially 2D ones.

They're endlessly replayable, usually have awesome music, and require a very specific skill set not often/ever required by other genres (though that last thing could be said about most genres, really).

Survival Horror. Seriously depressing that the genre is almost dead. Stuff like Lone Survivor doesn't come around too often anymore.

RPG and Action RPG comes at a close second, then TPS .

Grand strategy.

Map games forever!

That wasn't even my final form. I reincorporated Italy, took Bohemia, Hungary, the whole adriatic coast, ukraine, the Caucasus, Most of Arabia, the entirety of Persia, large chunks of North Africa, Norway....

platforming and TPS is a pretty killer combination

It's why Jak 2 is a masterpiece (it even had open world) and Uncharted 2 multiplayer is the bees knees

Lol, no. I don't hate them, but there are only a handful of TPS games with good gameplay. Most of them are just a casual stroll through a slow motion target range.

I think so. My favourite genre anyways. But more they're variants, which add in puzzles and traversal. I'd love if more FPSs became TPSs.

*EDIT* Wait, it's actually RPGs and JRPGs which house most of my favourite games... So it's more a tie then a definite yes.

The Last of Us was probably the first TPS that I truly loved since Resident Evil 4. And then before that... Maybe Tomb Raider II? It really is a C-Tier genre in my eyes.

My favorite is FPS. So much more finesse in the controls.

RPG and all it's variants/combos for me are the top genre for me, but strictly speaking shooters...

For shooters I prefer first person for competitive multiplayer, third for single player/co-op generally. I'd prefer Borderlands/Destiny if they were third person. Especially Destiny with all the different gear. Get to look awesome but never get to see yourself? Bleh.

Gunvalkyrie and Earth Defense Force 2017 are great, but not great enough to carry the entire genre. Haven't been able to get into any other TPSs.

I agree with OP mostly. But for me FPS are just as good. I like the mechanics, and they're mostly the same regardless of the camera mode. Excluding FPS leaves out Blood, Doom, Quake, Unreal and a hell of a lot of other amazing games.

Of course, TPS and FPS can cover a TON of varying game types, because really you're talking about the camera and controls more than the genre. Are Quake and Skyrim the same? Not really, but they both use the same camera and controls.

Nope, far away from that though I enjoy them.

RPGs are my favorite, namely those that are at least somewhat open. I don't even need full blown open world, just something where you're not running down a corridor the whole time. Incidentally the major reason I can't say most TPS are far from being my favorite genre, perhaps if you made a Metroid Prime-esque TPS then we'd be talking.

I think TPS is the best way to play a shooter with a pad compared to FPS, plus there is more emphasis on dodging (although I think all modern 3d shooters could do copying from rail shooters like Panzer Dragoon in regards to projectile types and dodging, rather than just hiding behind walls)

My problem with TPS is that there isn't that many I like, we need more Vanquish's, Space Marines and Zone of Enders.

And the fact that Virtual On - Ontario is mostly forgotten by today's gamers with no real modern SP/MP equivalent is a good example of how much stuck in a rut both the TPS and 1Vs1 fighting genres are in atm imo.

I've only played the first Virtual On (on a Saturn, of course) but I'd love to see the series reborn. A unique take on fighting games.

Third person games have always been the best to me. RPGs, Action/Adventure, Stealth, Tactical, Platformers... there's no genre you can't do really. First person is great, but it is a bit more limited I think because it is quite difficult to get some types of games feeling right with it.

The correct answer here is that games utilizing both viewpoints are almost always vastly better than ones that don't. It's a variety thing. That's me anyways.

For my personal preference I'll take third person over first person any day of the week. I don't like playing as 'the faceless mute'

My personal favorite are platformers, RPGs, and sim/management. Add in a dash of economics RTS and 4X and we're good to go!

Third person shooters are actually one of my least favorite genres. I went through all 3 Uncharteds before I realized that they're probably not for me, but with everything there are exceptions. Resident Evil 4/5 were really fun to play (5 mostly because it was co-op).

Obviously it's very versatile. It can be fun with almost all action genres if done right.

It's fun as a platformer, melee action, shooting in both single player and MP, and great for stealth.

I'm more of a fan of FPS's and RPG's.

TPS just doesn't work for me, mainly because most of them involve ducking behind chest high walls and popping your head out every few seconds, which I never really found enjoyable. Only TPS I actually liked was Vanquish, and even then I was getting tired of it near the end despite the fact that the game is only a few hours long.

I dont like games by genre in that way, although I do have a special love for fighting games. TPS is probably one of the worst genres as most are clunky and even the good ones like GoW and Uncharted aren't the most replayable games.

Mass Effect 3 MP is the best TPS :D

For shooters absolutely.

I want to see my character, their gear (and in-game HUD elements), animations and their relative position in space. I want to do swat turns and seamlessly vault between and over cover positions. I want to see more of the action than what I'm facing.

You lose so much in first person, and you usually end up as a camera on the head of a midget or worse, sticking out of a stomach. Your entire existence is a weapon protruding into the center of the screen. Its bizarre. And then you look down and its a gamble with every game: "Do I actually have feet this time?"

Just ditch the obvious chest-high cover in so many games and make the environments more organic and I'm all good.
