Is Twitter just too confusing to grow like Facebook?

i never really "got" twitter. i dont really know why "#" is called a hashtag or even why people use hastags and for what purpose
You could read the thread you're posting in, where it has been explained about a dozen times in plain, simple English.

I'm curious now; what's a good client for twitter? I use it all the time and never really thought about using a client.

People use clients for Twitter? Why? It's so simple, already.

It's called a hashtag because it's a tag marked by a hash.

# = hash
text_following_it = tag

I use Twhirl

It sits in my taskbar like any IM client. Very simple to use.

It looks like this except I set the input box to be on the top because it makes more sense for twitter:

If Twitter is too confusing, then you might not want to be on the computer at all.
it's not hard to use, it's hard to understand the point of for a lot of people.

it's awesome if your internet is fucked though. I don't call companies, I just search on twitter and read the bitching.

So then don't read anything by those people?

It's like saying you don't read GAF because some people here aren't very smart.
People are so insulated from others on Facebook that they don't realize how many dumb as fuck people use it. As if Twitter's transparency is a bad thing.

I read most of this thread, but...

...this.

I think if people who make Twitter accounts utilized the Lists feature more, the experience would be a better one for you, probably. I love it for sports and game news, and where else will I find out when a celebrity croaks?

Although I don't know how I feel about this "Activity" thing at the moment.

It's not too complicated, it's an objectively inferior concept.

Facebook lets you passively keep in touch with friends you don't see constantly. Twitter is essentially a blog with a small character limit. Somehow normal people have gotten it in their heads that other people want to read their Twitters. It should only be used for celebrities and such, IMO.

ugh, celebrities are the worst at twitter. there are some rare exceptions but most celeb twitter accounts are dull, dull, dull.

but sometimes something amazing happens like with Aston Kutcher's ignorant tweet about Penn State. that was great.

I love twitter as it keeps me entertained with some genuinely funny and interesting people creating posts all day long. sometimes they link to interesting things. sometimes they're just really funny and make me smile a bit while I'm killing time. And since I don't need to worry about following real life friends like I would on facebook, the twitter feed is much better than the always lame facebook feed from the people you know.

As for the idea that twitter is complicated. yeah, I'd say that's fair if a new user were to see all the posts with hashtags and confusing, multi-layered retweet symbols and @replies.

the official RT function seems clear enough but it's confusing when some people use the offical function and then others just manually type in "RT" in front of another user's tweet.

I find it easier to enjoy twitter if I just ignore hashtags most of the time.

I don't think many outside of computers know a # as a hash - in everyday use it's just used as a standin in "numeral" or for indicating selections on automated phone messages, where it's called a pound sign.

Another issue - why do tags need to be "marked" for trending? Can't it simply use basic word analysis to see what people are talking about? There are technical reasons I'm sure, but the average person cares little for things like that.

I love twitter. I follow lots of writers and generally cool/insightful people. Plus it's great for live events like sports or bad awards shows that everyone would be watching at the same time.

I don't use Twitter. I have an account but what can I say in 160 characters? I think what people like about it is that it's the one platform where you can interact directly with celebrities. On Facebook they have fan pages which are usually managed for PR purposes. On Twitter, you can go back and forth between Aston Kutcher when he makes a stupid statement about Joe Paterno. Can't do that on Facebook because most celebrites have fan pages and their real profiles are private.

Let nobody question the purpose of Twitter from this point forth.

All the NBA drama right now is breaking/blowing up because of it.

I hate the word limit on Twitter. I use twitter for dinosaur related postings and fuck me if I could fit a dinosaur name and say anything worth while within the limit.

I always wonder how stuff like
#iwouldkillyouif or similar tags become trendibg topics. Who starts those?

i dont really get the #tags anyway as twitter analyses trending topics with normal words anyway
