Is Tycho an idiot or am I missing something?

...actually there were six megaman games before x. i'd send them an email if i thought it mattered a damn. :/

Ha! Even the Nintendo Power announcement of Mega Man X pointed out that "No, that's not the roman numeral X, it's a new series!"
Someone wasn't reading his NP!

Yep, thus far this thread proves that there's NOTHING confusing or whimsical about the confusion of X and 10. All Tycho will learn is that Megaman fans are reactive, panicky and pseudo-political rather than illiterate.

And seriously how dumb do you have to be to think "X" meant "10" in this case?
How much of a dork do you have to be to ask this question? It's called MegaMan X. It's a confusing title and an easy mistake. The only people who know it's not a sequel are people who...already knew it wasn't a sequel.

Does he think X-Men is 10-Men too?
This is beyond retarded.

Well lets not forget X2 through X8, which kinda gives it away. That and there's no X1, AND MMX was out before MM7. So it's all dumb.

This is the same problem I have with people referring to Xenosaga Episode II as "Episode 2" instead of Episode "Aye Aye" (a reference, of course to the pirates in the game rather than it being a sequel).

But they aren't. You can tell that they are definitely in disagreement about this by the folowup posts they've both made.

Actually their followup posts lead me to believe what I'm thinking is right. :P

I considered that, but it's not funny. It would only serve as him being elitist.

Har Har.

Examining the responses on the front page, I wonder how much berating Tycho does do to Gabe based on assumptions.

I do suggest everyone read the front page. I find the banter hilarious and very similar to arguments I used to have with other gamers (though not on this particular subject).

Reminds me of a joke I heard once. Kid is in school, English lit. class. He reads the title of a play as "Henry V" - and says the letter v not "the fifth". He's corrected. He then goes to history class and reads, out loud, the name of Malcom X as "Malcom the Tenth".

You know, I can think of no other artistic medium so creatively bankrupt that X is justifiably confusing as to whether it means ten or not.

They've updated their frontpage:

HAHA I was right you fucker! The X does not stand for 10. I've got about a dozen emails from gamers telling me the real deal on the X. There were only eight Megamans, uh…Megamen there were only eight games before X. The X denotes a branching of the Megaman universe. Who’s the junkslut now? I propose that you sir are the junkslut.

"I'm sure you've already recieved countless e-mails regarding this, and if
you have feel free to dispose of this. I've been a huge Mega Man fan since I
first played #2 on my Nintendo somewhere in the pre-historic era. The
CLOSEST there ever was to being a Mega Man 9 was a game called Mega Man and
Bass, in which you can play as either Mega Man or Bass, but this game did
NOT follow the regular "Mega Man" story line, at least not too closely. Alot
of people dispute that this is the missing 9, but that is simply not the
case. See " http://www.mmhp.net/GameHints/RnF.html#Plot ". I hope this sheds
even more light on your recondite situation. : )"

Well, Leighton, its not that it sheds light on my situation so much as it plunges my cohort deep into impenetrable darkness.

Imagine me pacing through a dark command center. The walls are covered in giant video screens scrolling though volumes of text and data. The sunken room is filled with row after row of computer terminals, each one occupied by a young man in a wrinkled white dress shirt with thick black glasses. My hands are clasped behind my back as I stalk the aisles. The only sounds are the soft hum of electronics, the gentle thrum of the air purification system and the rapid clicking of computer keyboards.
Then a scream! A young man, I think his name is Henson jumps to his feet and shouts “I’ve got something sir!” I move to his terminal and take the sheet of paper he’s holding in his outstretched hand never breaking eye contact with him. “Are you sure?” I say. He swallows hard, the kid smells like coffee and mountain dew but he stares right back at me and says. “I’m sure sir, this is it.”

I let my gaze drop to the print out he’s given me:

actually, there were only 6 mega man games before mmx. mmx came out in 1993, mm7 came out in 1995. they then released mmx2 & x3 for the snes before releasing mm8 for the ps1 and saturn.

mmx series is a spinoff.

gabe = you win.

tycho = go play your pc ^_^

I look back up to find he’s still staring at me. The room is silent as I place my hand on his shoulder, “You did good today son. You did good.”

While amusing, it's just banter. Reminds me of the talk in Pulp Fiction about "same ballpark". Just don't take it too seriously. I find the whole thing hilarious.

I remember when I was a kid I thought MMX was the 10th one because there were 6 for the NES and 3 for the Game Boy already out. Of course as soon as I played it I knew I was wrong.

it is hilarious. but it's also hilarious to look at the whole "x" naming convention, or any genre naming conventions [mgs and it's adjective/noun-animal hybrids immediately springing to mind].

Yes, Tycho is an idiot. That doesn't really have much to do with this strip, just something anyone that have read pennyarcade would know. If you're a regular reader, you're also an idiot. It's that simple!

First time I agree with you.

It's more the irony that he thinks everyone that pronounces it "X" is an idiot when he is oh so smart for knowing his roman numerals. And seriously how dumb do you have to be to think "X" meant "10" in this case? Does he think X-Men is 10-Men too?

"Although i'm sure various Megaman fans have
e-mailed you, their sniveling nerdy noses wrinkling at the thought of
their blue-bomber hero, to support your attrocious lies. . .they fail
to recall the game "Rockman and Forte"; which is often dubbed "Megaman
9". Although unreleased in America and not officially called the 9th
game by the cartridge itself, it was clearly numbered as such while in
production (confirmed by Capcom in Nintendo Power, March issue, 1998).
This would clearly make it evident that Tycho was indeed right in
calling you a "junkslut"...you junkslut...

Auf Wiedersehen"

So this is Tycho's counter-argument? Some obscure numbering from internal Capcom documents? Weaksauce.

FTW. Unless Capcom suddenly comes out with Devil May Cry 7, followed by Devil May Cry 4, thus bringing the argument back to the forefront because of the Cap's misuse of numerations.

Even so, I can't believe that Tycho did not realise Megaman X was called that because the Megaman in that game, his name was X. (ecks)

I've played through X, X2 and X3 and I don't recall X being referred to by anyone as Megaman, or Megaman X even...just X.

Good to know it really was a fuckup, which I suspected it was. I never expect anything deep from PA. :lol

The sad part is your hate for them is neither particularly original or particularly clever. Indeed, the comic and site itself is actually preferable to the endless tirade of complaints from nobodies trying to prop up their e-penis by criticizing visible targets.

Yeah they're not gold, but they give out a good chuckle every once in a while.

Talking about originality, then wanting every reply to be as witty as possible? No.

At least nobody called "Guilty Gear X" "Guilty Gear 10". As for Guilty Gear XX, then people would call it guilty gear 1010 or just Guilty Gear 10 hense the binary code.

:D

Just joking around I guess to lighten up the mood.

Not to be a DB, but if people assumed that the XX in Guilty Gear XX is Roman Numerals, then people would call it Guilty Gear 20. ;)

What? Start making some sense.

Shit pisses me off. What the hell are you even trying to say?

Does it even matter? PA is two guys who do something they like, were able to amass many fans, started up a charity that does outstanding and I'm pretty sure they're making decent money off their site. So even if I don't roofle my ass of at every comic I still say good for them. They could probably not care less what is said about them by over-analytical cockshits on GAF.

Isn't the biggest tip-off the fact that Megaman is actually CALLED "X" in the MMX series? =/ Anyone who played the game should know this, you don't have to be that much of a super nerd.

Edit: Also, the comic doesn't even make sense. I thought the new Mega Man came on PSP was a port of the NES Megaman 1, not Megaman X? MM1 and MMX are two completely different games.

QFT. Thread done.

Did anybody notice in Tycho's (shitty and completely wrong) response has a link which further proves hims wrong? Way to go.

Important Note: This game is not Mega Man 9. Not even the Japanese version. Don’t believe all of the ROM download sites. If the game was Mega Man 9 it would say so on the box and title screen. Trust me on this one.

:lol :lol :lol

the simple truth is that Tycho is a fucking moron, and not really much of a gamer, it seems. Fuck him. End of story.

How did you not know? The remake for MMX has been out in the US for like 2 weeks now. On the small chance that you're european, I fail to understand how you managed to completely dodge the news that MMX was remade.
