Is Wii U still sold out ?

And then we come to price. I don't see either coming in at under $400, and despite what people saying about how much tablets and the like cost, there's a huge difference between them and consoles. Consoles over $400 are going to struggle at first, especially since a lot of people will keep buying CoD and Fifa for the systems they already own until there's a big difference between the two, which will take awhile (Especially for Fifa). Unless there's a TON of must have games at launch (Which there won't be), it's going to be a tough first year or so.

Surface just bombed at a high price tablet. Apple are losing market share and the cheap skates are ruling the town.

Agree with what I bolded so much. The market has changed, multiplayer has taken over, its not because of gameplay as such but socialising. A $400+ price would just mean for me to play COD with my mates I have to pay $460+ Theres just no incentive. People will literally not need a new console.

No doubt we'll see a next gen exclusive COD as Activision push the series on similar to what they did with COD4; until stuff like this happens I think they'll struggle.

$399 would be the difference between doing 'enough' and doing poorly though.

These threads are silly enough without assuming things about games that don't exist yet.
For all you know COD4 is going to be completely different. Probably not. But it might. It might be a HUGE visual upgrade. Maybe not, but it might.

You have no idea what the incentives could possibly be, and purposely choose to assume the worst.

i bought a wii to play twilight princess (and owned a gamecube)

Kinect meanwhile has died, and is a broken mess of a fad. People have gone back to dancing with Wiimotes.
The superior input method..

If anything, the superior input method for dance games is kinect considering how you just dance instead of needing a controller and/or remote.

Dance Central 3 being one of the highest rated games this year also further proves that fact.

I have never seen hate so strong on gaming forums as I have recently seen with some people on gaming forums when it comes to kinect. There are things I don't like but man... some gamers really go in as if kinect did something personal to them lol. Will never understand it.

I don't see what that has to do with my point. I was arguing price acceptance not how it competes with ipads
I'm saying price for the next consoles will be a big issue. Saying tech sells at high price points because Apple products do is faulty because there's virtually no way any console is going to have the kind of appeal an iPad has.

Neither the Nextbox nor PS4 is setting launch records with a 399 USD price tag unless the economy really picks up in the following year.

100 million is not a big number in the big scheme of things

There are only 5 systems that have cracked 100 million in history:

PS2 150 million +
DS 150 million +
Gameboy/Gameboy Color 119 million
PS1 102.5 million
Wii 100 million +

That's it. And the Wii is still selling, expect the Wii Mini to hit other markets next year. It will handily be the 4th best selling console of all time by the end of next year.

Wii hasn't hit 100 million.

Because it doesn't work well. They skimped on the chipset to get it into stores as cheap as possible, and it has a lot of trouble recognizing motions and doing what it's supposed to. The Giant Bomb Kinect Quick Looks are like an ongoing comedy routing.

But the next edition is supposed to include the necessary processing power, and be included in the system. It should do well.

COD4 came out in 2007 so I really hope thats not what they're using to launch the systems :p
I doubt there will be a huge upgrade until 2014 when both consoles are out. Plus we know MW4 is out next year - so that will be cross-gen 100%.

IThe visual upgrade will have to affect gameplay by making the overall image clearer.
I don't see anyone paying $450 for a COD on 720/PS4 when its on 360/PS3/PC/WiiU.

Some people will. The graphics whores will, people with spare cash will and early adopters will.
But for most the COD on the current systems will be all they need/want.

I've said throughout the WiiU launch that no console needs to sell its LTD in 1 week; which will be true of PS4/720; but if there above $400 then I think that acts as an ongoing barrier to sales.

Just thinking about the money people have in their pockets. Sales will be affected by such a price point.

i bought a wii to play twilight princess (and owned a gamecube)

I did say earlier on that if theres big support for the systems they will do better.
Meanwhile TP had motion controls. The big pull that gen.

Me? I bought in on Gamecube and got a 360 because the Wii launch games did not excite me. Buying a Wii later down the road.

Do you work for Microsoft? Kinect games have been selling like crap, and people hate on them cause their shit. Its poorly made hardware that does not work.

Same with Hula Hoops.

I'm really worried this is not sarcasm...

The kinect only games may be bad.
But i have greatly enjoyed the voice controls and use them a lot/in games where its an option.
Sure I look stupid shouting "OVERLOAD" at my tv. But the voice command aspects is definitely functional.

I think 400k during Black Friday week was pretty good seeing as during that time they were sold out everywhere and going for crazy prices on ebay. Not the case now but still.
Crazy prices? $500 at the most on ebay.

Wii is the fastest selling console in history. If that's the standard we're holding things to for considering Wii U lukewarm, then PS4/Durango will be dead on arrival.

Best selling HD console debut in history. If course, how could this not be seen as lukewarm?
Do you not read? The Wii could not be found for months after release. Wii U is having no such supply constraints.

Exactly.

Same with Hula Hoops.

...and people probably used their hula hoops more than their Wii's. If it wasn't for Netflix...Wiis would have been forgotten about in most homes.
Sounds like you're projecting. There's no doubt that Wii had the the standard software droughts Nintendo consoles have experienced since the N64, but I still play my Wii library as often as any of my other systems, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

The fact that Microsoft is likely going to include motion control in their next system should show the Wii was not a fad. This is like saying because Nokia sales went down the toilet cell phones were a fad. Motion control is going to continue to be part of systems going forward sans maybe Sony because there's did nothing to help the PS3.

Seriously I thought this dumb argument ended years ago.

Oversimplified view. This is a console launch, the last console to launch that did not completely sell out was the PS3.

Because that was the last freaking console to launch. You're acting like this type of thing happens every year. I think anyone is saying the Wii U launch was amazing and should be celebrated, only that is a respectable number and we need to wait to learn more.

I think it would be great if the COD crowed avoids the generational leap so publishers would finally realise that they can't try to get those 20m users making more dudebro games. If that means that gaming would become niche again I'm fine with it.

There was a time that the Wii was selling more software than everything. Nintendo should have released the Wii U two years ago.

I love how the first two words set up the rest of the post. I think making a direct comparison between the PS3 launch and the Wii U launch without looking at context is disingenuous at best.

I'm only stating facts, no need to jump, especially considering how the Wii U is in fact being lauded as selling more than the PS3 as if it is supposed to impress anyone.

Well, both PS3 and Wii U are the successors to the most popular consoles of their previous generation respectively, among other parallels. I don't know how the Wii U will do, no one does, but I have my expectations of it, and they're low. All the signs from what I can see tilt negative if anything though.

I think if Wii U would have released 2 years ago it would have done better. People had started going for the 360 after the Wii. Nintendo has lost those customers and mindshare. People grew up.

Yes. People are ready for adult games like god of war and modern warfare. So mature.

PS3 was so easy to find in 2006. Just as easy as the Wii U, at least.

You might be having some revisionist history, but PS3 was pretty hard to obtain before Christmas 2006. I know because I was trying to get one before Christmas and I had to line up before opening at a Target to finally get one a few weeks after launch.

What games do they even have in store for the next 3 months... I don't want to wait till March for the next Pikmin...

You don't think the next three weeks will be a wonderfall of quality?

Yes, because Nintendo's doing an unprecedented number of channel restocks for a console launch. Wii going the way it did is precisely why they're handling Wii U the way they are.

All this doesn't change the fact Wii U is outselling 360 and PS3 launches though. Sure it has more supply available, but it's still doing significantly more. And it did sell out it's launch shipment during the first week anyway going by Nintendo's comments.

I was at gamestop earlier today and they had big signs everywhere that said Wii U available here and they had them just lined up on the counter behind them. The store was empty.

Do you work for Microsoft? Kinect games have been selling like crap, and people hate on them cause their shit. Its poorly made hardware that does not work.

lol no I don't work for Microsoft. I was just stating that there's a decent number of games (some kinect only.... GASP!!!) that have gotten solid ratings showing that kinect does work for certain games.

Love how you just completely dismissed what I said in my post (about dance games) to call me an MS employee.

Because it doesn't work well. They skimped on the chipset to get it into stores as cheap as possible, and it has a lot of trouble recognizing motions and doing what it's supposed to. The Giant Bomb Kinect Quick Looks are like an ongoing comedy routing.

It was definitely rushed but there are a decent number of examples of it working pretty well for certain games/features. After trying out various games, it's obvious which ones were actually made with the device in mind and which ones were pretty much forced to work with the device.

Anyway, back on topic...
