Is your love of gaming waning?

Nope - ever since I built a gaming PC a couple of months back it's opened another door in games I would never be able to play before (Starcraft 2 and The Witcher 2 to be exact).

More like buying less and playing the older games more.

Same plus accepting that companies I used to love are not as they used to be.

Also for point 1 in the OP PSN/XBLA can really diversify what your options are.

I'm sitting here looking at my gaming shelf of 100+ PS3 games.. and I realized only about 5 of them do not have any type of driving of a vehicle or shooting of a weapon in them. That is why my interest is waning. I want more unique games like Alice: Madness Returns (even though you shoot in it, I know.)

Main pillars of current generation:

Guns
Swords
Cars

Not in the least. It's a bit like asking "Are you bored with watching films?" or "Bored of reading books?" there's too much breadth to the medium to ever be bored of it. If you're sick of shooters (or Hollywood films) then just turn your head away from it and look at all of the other amazing stuff that's out there.

It's not waning so much as it's tending towards extreme exclusivity; I probably love gaming even more now than ever, but I just don't have the time (or money) to throw myself into it so wholeheartedly as before. While nowadays I'm always chasing down only the outstanding games that review exceedingly well or casual titles like Terraria that I can drop in and out of time permitting, my actual appreciation for the hobby has definitely not gone anywhere.

I spent less and played less games this generation, but my interest for gaming has stayed pretty much the same. I do replay games more this generation than the last though, mainly because there are barely a few games that interests me.

Really though, the difference wasn't really that big for me, my collection on ps2 wasn't that huge and there weren't really a lot of games I enjoyed as much as Gaf do, which could be said for this generation as well. Though I've played considerably less games from some developers I liked in the past because of their low output and mediocre games, but what could you do, time change.

There's too much variety in gaming these days for my interest to wane. Yes, you heard me right. Variety.

We have more variety in gaming now than in possibly any time in history.

Everyone focuses on the big, advertised, triple A epics all being shooters or Half Tuck Hero games. Now, that is a real problem. Big Pub is running those games into the ground.

But in an era when FIGHTING GAMES are in a full scale revival and I can walk into a brick and mortar store and buy weird Japanese cave shooters off the shelf, the scales are balanced out by other factors.

We all focus on the one or two big personal disappointments, such as pining for Xenoblade to get released for the Wii in the west. Or pick your niche interest, insert here.

But between the PC, indie, all these consoles, these portables, and yes, Those Fuckin' Smartphones, if you can't find a dozen games right now that are awesome, no matter how weird your tastes are, you might be tired of the activity of gaming itself, and not let down by the gaming landscape.

If you want to make things happen in an electronic world right now, somebody has got you covered.

My interest in gaming isn't waning but, my boredom with what is out kind of is at times. I really wish Nintendo, Sony, and MS would push out new IPs as hard as they push new hardware.

Real life also gets in the way a lot of my favorite hobby, which may lead to my thoughts on it some.

you should rename the topic to..
is your time for game waning?
to that i'd say yeah...
my love for games will most likely never go away, that's the real issue :)
Consider that apart from some guys in the range of 35+ (those being archaic-game adopter, coming when games were ranging from pong to odyssey for example), most EARLY gamers (space-invaders early) are now in the range of say 23-35, hence are either starting to face university or they are in the middle of their job career..
thus those gamers have less and less time, and you could mistake that for waning love for gaming itself..
save a few working gamers, the most avid gamers nowday are in the 14-25 range, so we're considering a player-base that at most has lived the mid period of snes...

plus call me nostalgic but I can't always get the old-time attachment to most characters of videogames nowdays...
someone for example named cole, and I share his pain.. while nice in the game and all, he doesn't really click in my gamer's heart like a say nathan drake does (if we're considering new franchises..).
or from a jrpg perspective no matter what, ffxiii characters didn't give me anything, while say a Fei from xenogears was a whole complete matter...
maybe I'm just nostalgic...

I just miss the Japanese arcade games that were more abundant in the 16 and 32 bit era :( I want more of those type of games :o

And more platformers that were on the NES and SNES.

Every time the first thing I check is if I can run Full Throttle on max settings.

My interest in gaming is the same as always. There are droughts in which don't feel like playing but these don't last more than 2 weeks. Though right now my gaming time got cut down because my PS3 died. Thank god I have a DS.

I find myself stuck alot now. Stuck between waggle, mini games, on rails and not into the remaining epic games like shooters/qte. Yes there is abit of a 2D resurgence at least but very few deliver the true full package. You have to accept waggle in it, generic polygons, or multi player focus. Dont get me started with rpgs. From PS2 to what we have now, oh the pain. I just hope DQX delivers as I was not feeling DX9 as it could be last rpg or game I truly get into after three decades.

If the Apple videogame apocalypse people are predicting comes true, I might be. But for right now I am a happy camper. If anything is bothering me I wished Japanese companies were ran more efficiently and that western developers tried harder to make their games more difficult so that cool mechanics don't go to waste.

We still have STGs covered, at least, assuming Cave isn't dropping out of arcade development just yet. Hard Corps Uprising is great, too, though it doesn't stick to arcade principles super closely. And all these fighting games, too.

Ultimately, though, I agree, of course. Outside of the above, I'd like some skill-based (not Castle Crashers) belt scroll games. There's, like, the new IGS game and nothing else on the horizon at all.

On the 5 waning franchises in the OP, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was a terrific return to form for the franchise. PW is definitely a strong MGS installment and one of the best games on PSP.

It's just changing. I don't seem to have the time or patience for longer gaming sessions anymore but I still spend quite a bit of time just reading about games or watching videos of games. I also find it difficult to finish games which doesn't really bother me, but it's somehow seen as a total waste of money if you don't complete the games you buy. As long as I get joy out of the stuff I spend my money on I'm fine.

I've lost interest in MP games and I'm more into smaller or older games than before.

Yes, but I chalk it up to growing up and lacking the time to actually play games. Getting sucked up into the "hype" by the community also didn't help -I ended up buying games despite not finishing or enjoying the ones I already have. It now feels like a chore when I turn a console or a handheld in, knowing that I have a huge pile of stuff waiting for me.

NeoGAF is still fun.

It was, but then Demons Souls and then this year actually revitalized my interests. The first Infamous actually helped a lot too.

My tastes have changed from the beginning of this year though.

At first I was all about high production values and great stories, so I played games like Mass Effect, GTA and etc. I soon found out that I actually wanted deep gameplay when I played Demon's Souls and wanted more games with uber deep play. Now I still want super deep gameplay, but I want high graphics too. I like high production games with great stories and stuff, but I don't seek them out as much. I don't even care about Mass Effect anymore, too shallow.

Not really.

I've found, looking at older games, that I've had to adapt my interests more to current trends that rarely match the things that originally enticed me into gaming in the first place.

However, I still find and enjoy many more games than I probably realize, and some of my favorite titles have come about in this current generation. Perhaps it's more difficult to wade through the waves of mediocre, similar titles than it once was, but when I find a game that catches my interest I still latch onto it just like I did when I was younger.

For me it's more like I'm getting older but games are stuck in the teens croud for the most part, and the so called "mature" games are more like "13-old teenager fantasies" than anything else.

So in a way I can see myself dropping from the hobby on the medium term.

Nope, my love of games isn't waning.

My love of waiting years after a game is announced to be released is waning. FFXIII, vXIII, Zelda: Skyward Sword, the new Tomb Raider etc. I'm tired of games being shown off, and then "Glad you liked the demo, not that you'll actually be playing it until at least a year, likely longer..."

Get the game ready, show a COMPLETED game when demoing, release no more than 3-4 months later.

I feel that I am at a crossroads in my gaming life. It has been a part of who I am for well over 20+ years yet lately I have begun to focus on my wedding in October, starting a family, paying bills and spending time with my family more than I ever used to. I still play but definitely not as much as I used to. Thing is, I am cool with that and I do look forward to some games coming out, especially at the end of the year.

If you wanted to be real cynical, you could criticize most popular fighting games for not quite living up to their predecessors. Blazblue, SF4, and MvC3. Either small step backs here and there or an annoying obsession with comeback mechanics which hurt the game. However I truly like all of these fighting games. (And for the first time ever Mortal Kombat isn't complete ass.)

I feel the opposite. The older I get the more "mature" games try to be right now, whereas if I go for something more "kiddy" I am totally okay with that. It's even enticing.

My love of JRPGs is waning because of companies not wanting to release them in English (and what few they do release being either crappy or creepy), but I've been playing more and more WRPGs so I don't miss them so much anymore.

I don't see myself continuing to support console gaming in the future more-so once this generation is over and the next set of consoles are announced. I opt for the portable option of gaming for it's easily a platform I can consume entertainment around my life. In terms of what the industry is offering and the direction it seems to be heading -- I think consumers in this field will be treated extremely well and have a lot to look forward to.

Honestly... if it weren't for indie gaming and certain smaller development houses (such as From Software), I'd be extremely disappointed in gaming right now. I still love gaming, but it's seeming to congeal around very particular experiences - and I've had those experiences for decades. I'm enjoying the new ones I've been getting recently though.

Also: Board games have grown more important to me over the last year or so as video games have fallen off in relevance.

My love of console gaming is waning.

Basically, I miss new IP. Franchise sequels have become increasingly iterative and safe.

I feel basically the same way.

I, too, used to have all the systems, now I only have a PS3 and I mostly play PS2 games.

I also think there is way too many FPS, not enough of the rest. And what they did to the rest is disappointing.

The reason, I think is mostly because now, people vouch more on graphics than on the story.
And what is with the futuristic stuff. Futuristic is good but I would love some more medieval based games, such as final fantasy 9, with swords and stuff.

There is also the fact that maybe we are growing up and our interest in games fade as we have less time to play them.

I won't even talk about the fact that there is no more new franchises, and the huge amount of remake, wich is ridiculous.

No. Since I starting gaming with the N64 era, discovering the SNES and NES eras of gaming has been amazing. Currently playing Chrono Trigger, Megaman 5 and Super Mario World 2. Awesome, awesome games.

However, I do kinda agree if we're talking about modern gaming. I simply have very little interest in all these American made, AAA games.

Not in the least bit. I sadly don't have enough time to game as is so while the decline of the Japanese game is unfortunate, it hasn't had much effect on me. Sports games are really great for playing for an hour or two and as time has progressed, theyve gotten better and better so that helps a lot.

Competitive gaming will always keep my soul on fire.
Soul Calibur V, SFxT, Heart of Swarm incoming.

Also, as long as there are Blizzard games, I am happy.
