Isao Okawa wanted the Xbox to be backwards compatible with the Dreamcast

Just caught this on reddit. I've always maintained that the Xbox was the Dreamcast 2, from having great original Sega games to building on the online capabilities and having the same controller layout. This just further confirms it.

Xbox 1 would have instantly gone from 5th favorite console to 1st or 2nd.

nothing would have changed at all. PS2 hype was through the roof for the whole sixth generation era.

Wouldn't have changed sales, but would have thightly bound SEGA to Microsoft which would have been extremely interesting for the long term. Plus playing Dreamcast games on my Xbox would have been fucking awesome.

And yet there's a Dreamcast emulator for PC but not "Dreamcast 2"/X-box emulator on any platform. :(

This is how I always thought of it, especially with all of those niche titles on it, and the fighting games - in fact it was the console that was next in line that I bought after the Dreamcast.

Goddamn. Had they done that then the Xbox would have been huge. Probably would have garnered a lot stronger Sega Support. Possibly even exclusivity.

I can't even imagine how this would have changed things.

360 is an Xbox emulator. And besides, virtually every worthwhile game got a PC port.

Many games emulate but emulate poorly with glitches or slowdown. JSRF has a terrible framerate in some spots and is borderline unplayable, Panzer Dragoon Orta crashes after the 3rd level every single time without fail and although these games run in higher resolution on 360, many of them don't run in widescreen as they did on the original Xbox, which is admittedly not a huge deal but it would be nice to have some widescreen hacks. While a lot of games did get PC ports, I'd rather play an emulated Xbox version of Splinter Cell than the PC one with dodgy keyboard controls, something even Xpadder can't surmount. Chaos Theory got a great port though after fiddling with Xpadder for a few minutes to get things perfect. I do understand that maybe it shouldn't be as high priority as PS2 or Gamecube emulation but it would still be very welcome.

Knew of this, but not why it didn't happen, wow.

Was online (outside of PSO) that big on DC? Kind of an odd reason for MS but also one you'd think be small enough for Sega to accept. I dunno.

i spent many hours on NFL2k and Unreal. Probably not a huge user base as today, but gaming has blown up a bunch since then.

I owned 3 Sega consoles; then 3 Nintendo consoles and now 3 Sony consoles. I progressed in a very linear fashion and was left looking for a new "home" after the Dreamcast (excluding weird ones like the 3DO, Turbografx, Commodore 64, etc.).

If this had happened; it would have greatly impacted my gaming experience. I owned the 360; but it collected a lot of dust, as I always preferred online gaming on the PS3 and the exclusives.

This would have been massive for me.

Take this one step further and imagine if the Sony & Nintendo cooperative plans had happened. What a strange world we'd be living in right now.. ha

I think it would have been a scenario much like the PS2 chip inside early PS3s: It was neat and many appreciated it, but over time the games developed for the new hardware (PS3 or "Xbox" in this example) was what mattered.

In my opinion, 360 was the real "Dreamcast 2", down to the hardware colorway.

I loved Dreamcast back then so this probably would've made me buy the original Xbox. Now I never owned it, only jumped in with 360.

Some of Sega would have been closed for sure. However, if a franchise sold well, like with Halo, Fable, and Forza, M$ would keep them around.

I'd guess Sonic, the sports, Virtua Fighter, and possibly PSO w/ charging for a hunters license would have all been kept around into the 360. Everything else though would have probably been done after its last release. I also think that with Sonic, MS wouldn't have felt as compelled to buy Rare.

Get this shit outta here

XBox was an awesome system, and early on had some great Japanese games. DoA 3 and Shenmue 2 were two other titles to add to Green Slime's list. And then the first Splinter Cell (which was a good game).

OG Xbox was fantastic. I'll never forget that christmas when I got mine.

Exactly. Not to mention games like Phantom Dust ( one of the best games of that gen), Phantom Crash, Wreckless, Panzer Dragoon Orta ,the Otogi Series,Jet Set Radio Future,Gunvalkyrie, Ninja Gaiden Black and Metalwolf Chaos. Og xbox had a great line up.

Shenmue 2 is a black eye since DC owners got royally screwed by MS there.

How so? I came to the Xbox straight from the DC and i had( actually still own) Shenmue 2 for it and played the hell out of it.

Ugh, I actually got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach reading this. I liked the OG Xbox (ah, fond Morrowind memories) and their picking up of key Sega properties did get me to jump on board, but no, just no.

I don't think that's possible. I'd only put Microsoft ahead of EA.

Microsoft is in the console business and runs a, well-funded, gaming division.

Sammy is a pachinko company that doesn't give a shit about gaming.

If you ask me, Microsoft would have been the lesser of the two evils.

That didn't help Rare. We would've probably got a few good games out before they decided Sega and their franchises didn't fit with Microsofts direction or goals, and relegated the name to Kinect or party games. On top of that also would have abandoned Sega's amazing PC division.

Pokemon with microtransactions, fps Mario warfare, Donkey kong kinect ...

Bill Gates seemed to be pretty close to all these Japanese Console manufactures. Before Xbox was produced.

Although he seems to be busy with his Philanthropy, I wonder if he is truly still interested in making a deal with Nintendo.

I can't see Nintendo accepting anything of the sort. At least not just yet. Perhaps if their next console suffers a similar fate, but who knows where the industry will be then. The ideal solution would be for Nintendo to make multiplatform games. Unlikely but one can dream.

Edit: But yes, if Nintendo and MS teamed up to make a console, that thing would be unstoppable. But the same would be for both Sony and MS and Sony and Nintendo partnerships.
