It’s almost showtime for SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket

SpaceX announced on Friday that the company is targeting "mid-November" for the second flight test of the Super Heavy rocket and its Starship upper stage.

The company said the launch date is pending regulatory approval, which means that the Federal Aviation Administration and US Fish and Wildlife Service have yet to complete the environmental review
process for the rocket and its launch site, which is surrounded by wetlands in South Texas.

Even so, the SpaceX announcement indicates that the company believes it may soon receive this regulatory approval. This is consistent with what sources have told Ars—that federal approval for the second launch of Starship is close to wrapping up.

Edit:

SpaceX delays second Starship test launch to Nov. 18 to replace rocket part

There is a chance that the fish and wildlife service demands that they recuperate the water from the sound suppression system.

I guess they will have to check regularly if adding freshwater into the surrounding brackish water does damage.

I expect SpaceX to build slopes and a retaining pond, as water in these quantities isn't cheap anyways, so it's in their best interest to get that water back.

Was hoping for a launch today as I was off work. But gotta get those fins working.

Totally excited and nervous as hell for tomorrow

SpaceX stream is up on X. Gorgeous shots of the Starship.

Can't embed the broadcast so check out the SpaceX feed.

SpaceX just officially confirmed the size of Starship and the booster is equivalent to Mecha Godzilla.

Not even kidding, they even had a nice visual to compare the two.

Everyone is scratching their heads about the loss of the upper stage. It seemed to work perfectly all 6 engines worked until it used up the planned fuel and then it seemed that the fts was triggered

What happenned with stage 2?

From my perspective it would appear they knew it wouldn't reach escape velocity and decided to toss it, they rocket was closing in to 30k and and fuel was almost empty (you need 40k for escape velocity).

Objectives include (courtesy of ChatGPT):

* Successful ascent burn of both stages, opening and closing the Starship’s payload door, and demonstrating propellant transfer during the upper stage’s coast phase.

* First-ever re-light of a Raptor engine while in space and aims for a controlled reentry of Starship.

* Flying a new trajectory, targeted to splashdown in the Indian Ocean, allowing the attempt of new techniques like in-space engine burns while ensuring public safety.
