So i'm looking at Schwinn and they say this about this bikes and from looking at the description i'm leaning towards these. Not sure which would be good for me

Cruisers

Perfect for riders who want a classically-styled, comfortable and simple bike to cruise around town or on the beach.

Hybrid

Perfect for riders who want a comfortable and versatile bike for casual and fitness riding on road or off.

Urban

Perfect for riders who want a functional, durable and stylish bike to commute or ride casually in urban areas.

and

Bike Path

Perfect for riders who want a comfortable and easy-riding bike with convenient features for casual riding over all surfaces.

Check if you have a nearby bike coop. Properly fixed up old bikes can run for cheap, and will be far more pleasing to ride than a cheap Walmart special.

And take care out there. Read up and follow rules of the road and stay safe.

Watch out if you get a Walmart bike. They have really shoddy construction and prone to defects, just make sure you check it all around. My wheel on the bike would not fit at all.
I work for walmart and build those bikes. They're cheap but, not garbage. Just be sure to test it first.
Lol, so true. But don't go too cheap, OP. Those Walmart bikes are kind of terrible.
They aren't that bad. If you want a good bike go to a bike store.

Been thinking about this as well. I think Ontario has a bunch of nice bike trails that I'd like toe experience. Plus I need the exercise and a new hobby.

If anything, don't get a bike with zero fenders or mudguards.

Because if you hit even a single puddle, that mud and water flings up and ends up on your back.
Fine if you're a mountainbiker and don't care about that, but for a commuting bike it's absolutely terrible.

I wanna learn how to ride a bike. NYC winters make me appreciate Puerto Rican summers. And now that this winter was cut short I feel so fucking good, this weather is directly impacting my emotions. Makes me feel amazing.

I would recommend knowing how to ride a bike BEFORE biking in NYC

Any GAFfers have a BMX cruiser? 24" or 26"?

I'm 5'11" and used to ride when I was a kid. I want it for mostly for casual riding. Is it decent for point a to point b rides? Probably no more than a mile or two at a time.

I haven't ridden a bike since 2008 or so but it's how I used to get around everywhere. There's some bike trails nearby my new place, roommates own some bikes but I dunno if they are okay with me riding them around. Might be a nice alternative to always just using an elliptical. Work is like 18km away though so that ain't happening.

My old bike(s) when they were my primary means of transportation to/from work were cheap ones from Canadian Tire (there was one maybe 1km from my apartment). They had pretty good warranties and I was...very rough on bikes. Snapped axles, bent handlebars, and pedals broken completely off meant I'd be back there at least once a year for a replacement. Sounds like a good deal until you realize that most of those problems also resulted in me eating dirt at the time of failure. I was built like a tank back then though, due to manual labor + no car.

2 years ago I got a trek on craigslist in denver for $50 from a college kid. Really good condition. Got it home and stripped it to the bare frame. Paint stripper, new paint, new brake lines, new seat, tires, tubes, tuned the shifters. Then it sits there for 2 years with maybe a full mile rode on it since I got it.

Everyone said I wouldn't ride it and I was going to prove them wrong. Nope still sits there.

My GF and I just bought Trek bikes (hybrids) and we've been riding 10-15 miles a day. Absolutely love them and I don't regret spending the $500 one bit.

Get a nice bike. We tried riding Walmart bikes in the store and they felt like quicksand in comparison to what we have now.

Local bike shop seems like the best way to go, if you're actually committed to riding. You don't have to be a racer to get good exercise and enjoy yourself at the same time. Might as well buy quality.

Craigslist could be good too and cheaper I'm sure, we were just squeamish rolling the dice with random sellers for two bikes.

I have to say this is a very good accurate experience for novices.

The "bike nerd" who intimidates you in the store may exist, but you can always find another helpful sales person who can help you find a bike with right size, weight and function.

It's not much different than video game buying for novices. Just have a budget in mind, and be honest about the types of surfaces you'll be riding on + how often.

I went with a cheap bike, then to a $300 two years later to a $700 model five years after that.

Wish I had skipped the "cheap" bike stage.

Buying a Walmart bike would be kinda like buying an Ouya as your only console.

An ouya that might have been assembled improperly and will burn your house down.

I've seen some shit at walmart. Front forks put on backwards etc. etc. Bikes undergo a lot of stress while riding and you can seriously get hurt if they aren't put together correctly.

Honestly, get a decent used bike on Craigslist over a Wal-Mart bike. Still won't be a giant investment and it'll be nice if you end up enjoying cycling.
