It seems like Shovelware is disappearing. Why? How?

people here are assuming 3DS will get shovelware when it takes off

I never thought I'd ever say this but 3DS and Vita better get some (as in, more than what they have now) shovelware, 'cause I don't think they'll survive without it.

If you're referencing to popular shovelware then wait until a new gimmick/WiiU releases.

Ubisoft to the rescue!

yeah, 3DS and Vita need presence in stores and that presence is gained with shovelware, sadly. Having a big selection, regardless of quality, give people the impression that the gadget has taken off.

as for Wii, for example, for every 50 crap games, we got a masterpiece like the galaxies or TP and that created a healthy ecosystem for Wii, back then. That nintendo left it to rot and die around 2009 is another story.

so yeah, it matters to have a big selection.

Still exists, there's just loads of great games coming out just now.

Uncharted, Arkham City, Deus Ex, Battlefield sit in our warm memories. Mario, Zelda, and Sykrim are glistening in our eyes.

I didn't forget to pick up Go Vacation. The be-all-end-all of shovelware titles.

Yes, 2009 was particularly bad for wii.

But give 2010 some credit. Monster Hunter 3, Red Steel 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment 2, Metroid: Other M, Kirby Epic Yarn, Goldeneye, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Epic Mickey.

At the end of 2010, I did look at my stack of wii exclusives and said 'that'll do wii.....that'll do'.

It's still all over the place. It's just that nobody pays attention to the Wii anymore.

This. Nobody talks about shovelware if there are plenty of other good games coming out. It becomes much more noticeable when there's nothing good coming out.

And that's just one publisher in one day in one region on one platform! :p

No dude. It's still coming out. TONS of it. It's just that now there are more GOOD games coming out so you don't notice the shovelware as much.

Ok, just to get this cleared up and for the OP to gain a sense of perspective: Wii releases in the last week (EU/NA only, 02.11 - 11.11)

Cabela's Adventure Camp
NASCAR Unleashed
Generator Rex: Agent of Providence
Trivial Pursuit: Bet You Know It
Monster High Ghoul Spirit
Sing4
Family Game Night 4: The Game Show
Just Dance Kids
Pro Evolution Soccer 2012
Monopoly Collection
Go Vacation
We Wish You A Merry Christmas
The Black Eyed Peas Experience
Country Dance 2
Happy Feet Two
Deepak Chopra's Leela
Nickelodeon Dance
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

People just aren't paying attention to the shovelware (as they should) but it's still there, just like always.

edit: also, I'm pretty sure that list isn't even complete, but I don't really know where to look for a more exhaustive list.

Yup, there it is. You can praise Infinity Blade all you like, but the vast, vast majority of smart phone games are unplayable crap aimed at people that don't know any better.

And Angry Birds is just a shit, dumbed down Worms. More or less.

Go to Target.
Find the bin labeled "Games $20 or Less!" or whatever.
See things you've never seen before because you're blinded by GAF.

Probably easier and more profitable to put it on the app store. But thats my assumption. No proof.

EDIT: Heh I guess others have shown, it still exists.

DS was pretty slow to start, too, took at least a good year and a half before the DS section really started overtaking the GBA one. 3DS hasn't even had a holiday yet, you're getting ahead of yourself.

The store I work at carries not one, not two, but THREE Chuck E Cheese themed DS games. There are still publishers/devs like UFO that are flooding the market with bargain bin shovelware titles, even at the tail end of the Wii and DS life cycles.

How dare you compare that piece of shit shovelware bird launching rubbish to an all time classic like Worms. At least Worms requires strategy.

I hardly go to Best Buy and the like these days unless it's to get a game day one. Last time I went to Target and they had the majority of good games in the DS section and just a few little shovelware licensed games along with it.

Most of my game buying comes from Amazon lately :)

I think that's the Marvelous Game iirc?

In Europe, sure.
In America, places like WalMart, Target and Best Buy have actual "value" sections that is basically filled with this crap.

In the K-Mart where I work (Australia) 90% of games in the Nintendo section are shovelware shit. I used to have to keep reducing the shelf space for the >$49 games because customers were apparently more interested in shitty $15 'Imagine!' games. Our entire video games section is just a haven for the shit now, for stock every week I'd get maybe 3 copies of Mario Kart DS, a couple of Pokemon and one copy of Galaxy 1 and 2 - and two or three large boxes packed to the rim with the most unimaginative crap, $15 games like "Garfield Gets Real" on the DS.

It'd help if Nintendo priced their games more competitively though, it really isn't that surprising that brainless soccer mums would choose to get a few $15 games instead of a good but overpriced $88 game like Mario Galaxy.

At the kmart I work at, we keep all that stuff up at the front by th registers. I love looking through those games. Once, there was this racing game that a customer was looking at. It was only a one-player game. In this day and age? Really?

how is this "healty"? shovelware takes store space and drowns good games in a mare magnum of crap. I think that the good / bad ratio was so low on the Wii that it actually hurted 3rd party sales (people started to think that only Nintendo games were good).

I remember around 2007 how the Wii and DS, like the PS2 before, were getting dozens of dozens of piece of shit videogames and videogame stores had complete walls covered with shovelware.

Not anymore.

3DS seems to be like a pesticide for shovelware and all other consoles just aren't getting much of it.

Why? How?
Most of it migrated to iOS and other mobile platforms. Facebook too.

OP doesn't visit the monthly US box art threads. There are still a shit ton of crap being produced for Wii, DS, 3DS, and more recently Kinect.
But yeah, iOS and Android platforms have an impact as well.

Well Ubisoft reported their lineo of shovelware titles stopped selling well lately. Probably because of piracy (on the ds) and partly because customers finally realized they sucked.

We still get Cabela games and quite a few really shitty games though.

It is still there on consoles and handhelds but more keep moving over to iOS.

And we should expect to still see a lot on the 3DS in the coming years. Preying on parents and kids with brands and ignorance.
