Itagaki leaves Tecmo, sues Tecmo president

No, you're right. Hayashi leads a different team.

He still ripped a workmate in a interview for the media. Also Itagaki has always acted like a egocentric bastard on most of his public apparitions. Dunno if it's "staged" or not, but i wouldn't like to work under someone like that.

BEST IDEA IN THIS THREAD. I would slaughter a 1000 gaffers for a remote possibility of this happening.
Well it may have been, up till now though:

Bushido Blade with DOA boobs, combined with the NG2 weapons and gore. MAKE IT HAPPEN

Hope he lands somewhere where he is allowed the resources to create the games he wants to make, and be properly compensated for his work. I love Team Ninja's titles, and hope that he takes the lot of talent from his team with him as well.

Oh, and I wouldn't mind another Rygar.

I wonder if he is going multiplatform from now on.

I feel devastated. It seems that Itagaki's comments were his way to vent out against the opression of Tecmo. FUCK TECMO!

I can't believe it's happening, especially in Japan where loyalty is worth higher than money?! Now what? Miyamoto suing Nintendo for all those bonuses? What in the world?

Would it be strange if MS gave him $50 million to start his own studio? For his years of dedicated service. Would that really surprise any of us?

Bad luck has nothing to do with it. All of those, to some degree or another, are easily explained away as MS being 'asleep at the wheel', nothing more.

MS haven't bothered fighting to keep their first and second party portfolio because it didn't appear as if they were that keen on having that many studios to begin with.

They still have the project gotham IP. Quiet as kept they really didn't need to hold on to any of the developers. Just secure the IP's. Or contract them.

Microsoft should have him head up an "action" studio for 360/PC products in asia/japan. Then you have Sakaguchi head up an "rpg" studio based in asia as well. Those in addition to Lionhead Studios, Turn 10, Ensemble, and Rare are a good 1st party mix. Then they lock Bungie, Valve, and Epic as 2nd party partners for PC/Xbox. They could still pimp out 3rd party deals to silicon knights, remedy, and the like.

"Action" Studio Asia: Itagaki -> 2 teams
"RPG" Studio Asia: Sakaguchi -> 2 teams
"Adventure/RPG" Studio Europe: Lionhead -> 2 teams
"Platform/Family" Studio Europe: Rare -> 3 teams
"Racing" NA: Turn 10 -> 2 teams
"RTS" Studio NA: Ensemble -> 2 teams
"FPS/Action" Studio NA: Bungie/Epic -> 3 teams

If MS is serious about Xbox Next, they have to really lock down talent and foster quality long-term development houses which it seems they are trying to create. They should have jumped on the clover guys when they had the chance.

Meh, Itagaki's small time. He really only had one great idea that was well executed and non-derivative. Even DOA at the top of its game still can't compete with the major franchises that went before it and now will be outliving it.

Though, who knows. Often times great things happen to a franchise when they switch directors. Final Fantasy anyone?

that's extremely inaccurate. MS allowed all those things to happen willingly. the bioware thing has been stated publicly that they just didn't have the kind of money to buy them (almost a billion dollars). you make it sound like MS didn't notice these things happening.

Just woke up and saw this news and this huge thread.

Holy shit. :lol

Very interested to see what he does next.

boycott tecmo? that won't be a problem seeing as they don't have shit worth playing now
I dunno, that Tecmo Bowl revival looks pretty tasty!

Team Tachyon (Pangya, Rygar, Fatal Frame, Monster Rancher) is also still around and I imagine Hayashi might step up an take the reigns of (what remains of) Team Ninja. This loss definitely hurts Tecmo imo (as losing your star producer would any company) but they're not out of things yet.

- Bungie wants to sever ties with Microsoft Game Studios and become independent

It's better that they are their own studio that still have close ties & a beneficial relationship with MS than have all the core talent leave out of frustation.

- Bizarre is purchased by Activision

A group that made 4 racing games in a franchise that was growing stale, and a score attack shooter that bombed is not worth investing millions to own.

- Bioware is purchased by EA

While I admit this was probably their biggest mistake out of your list, it just wasn't worth the price tag to outbid EA.

- Silicon Knights sues Epic

This has nothing to do with Microsoft, and it would have been inappropriate of them to intervene.

- Itagaki leaves Team Ninja

This has the potential to be a great thing in disguise. Considering the news is less than 24 hours old, the jury's still out on this one.

Sorry for being an optimist. :)

The guy is far from 'small time'.

lolwhut

Geometry Wars didn't exactly "bomb"...

One has to wonder, if Tecmo was willing to screw over their most successful games producer, what kind of treatment the rest of the company receives.
For all the people stating that people might not leave with Itagaki based on his alleged poor treatment of his staff, they might just up and leave because of poor treatment by Tecmo.
Itagaki's departure could potentially be the first and loudest shot fired as the company reaps the rewards of it's behavior towards it's employees.

Yes he is. He talks big and has hardly anything to show for it. Kamiya, Kojima, Miyamoto, Sakaguchi, Suzuki, these are the real names in japanese development. Itagaki has had less influence on the industry than David fucking Jaffe, for crying out loud.

He has a B+ fighting game series and an A+ Action game series under his belt. Plus he was the main coder on Tecmo Bowl back in the day. Pretty impressive resume if you ask me.

Most of those developers have been Lead Director for decades, Itagaki has done quite well in his 10 year long career.

Maybe this is why the Fatal Frame team is working with Grasshopper and Nintendo on the Wii game instead? They might get a better chance of not being fucked over that way.

The 800mil somehow look like peanuts compared to what MS was willing to spit out for yahoo. Hell, they could've probably realized everything that open_mouth mentioned in his first part of the post with that money, and still have some of it left. ;)

Fending off Google is a lot higher on Microsoft's list then being king of the video game market.
