i wonder how much i can sell an iriver h10 with 2 batteries for...

Since my Ipod broke, I've been using my PSP as a MP3 player, and it works just fine for me.

Before the Ipod, I had this real crappy Samsung player, that was nearly rusted by the time I was done with it.

Aw, come on... MD was awesome at the time. I loved my MD player, and the fun of trying to figure out 74 (or 80) minutes of songs to put onto one, after which I'd manically push the up and down volume buttons in order to give the tracks names.

Didn't replace my MD player until I got my first iPod. At that point, though, I never looked back.

Same here. MiniDisc rocked the house, then came iPod.

I still have my MD, but my brother broke it...

I don't understand how you guys can use PSPs as your main MP3 players. The thing is huge.(As far as MP3 players go)

I guess if you only used in the car...

I was LTTP, I purchased my first player, a 128 MB Iriver IFP-880, in
Akihabara the spring of 2004. I bought it for its Ogg Vorbis support
(which was very limited), but it turned out to be a bitch to get working
under Linux. Recently I purchased a 2GB Iriver T10 and converted it to
a UMS device. Both work fine, they're ugly but well-built (battery lasts
forever too).

Same thing here with NetMD.

I thought it was the shit back then because you could switch disks, but once I got my iPod it suddenly didn´t seem that handy. A nice couple of gigs is actually all you need.

My first player was a Creative Zen Microphoto (piece of shit) and I recently upgraded to a Zune 2 (not so bad).

I was also a minidisc man from way back. One thing I loved about it was the editing. I would record live bootleg disks and take out all the interminable wait between songs, tuning, shitty songs, etc. It was amazing to take a 2-hour concert and fit it onto an 80 minute disc. Likewise, studio albums had their between-song interval shortened. You could also rearrange the track order to whatever you wanted. Minidisc had a better native recording rate. Until the much bigger hard drive models arrived, I didn't see any reason to change. I didn't switch to the iPod until I picked up a cheap 5G video. Even then, I kept it on Rockbox OS and only just switched to iPod proper when I bought an iMac. I do wish the PSP had been backward-compatible with the format.

Obviously, you can't go back, although if I could find a nice Minidisc stereo for my car, I would install that with pleasure. I have all these disks of great concerts, cool mixes, etc. that are just lying dormant.

My first mp3 player was a RCA Lyra

By mine, I mean my brother's, I just used it more.

After I got out of Air Force Basic Training, I bought a 5G 30GB iPod Video and I had that until it got stolen (still pissed about that).

My current mp3 player is a 160GB iPod Classic.

I won one of those in a contest. :lol

I used it in my car so often that the buttons don't even work anymore.

I thought it was the greatest idea because the media was so cheap. But who wants to carry around all that media, I later discovered.

I have a Zune and an iPhone now.

I started with a ...

creative_nomad2.jpg

And loved it for many a year...

Replaced it with a Vision M 2 years ago and that one is still going strong.

Got a Zen Jukebox Xtra, loved it heaps. Now have an iRiver iHP-140 which is pretty great too. Possibly thinking about getting a Cowon Q5 if they ever release it outside of korea

edit: scratch that, looks like you can get it at some places online however it's insanely expensive........

I used my Sharp 831 MD player from '99 to '05 before I went MP3. As far as I could tell, nothing beat it in terms of sound quality. The bass enhance mode on it was unrivaled and made music sound huge on my PortaPro's. Haven't heard anything that rivals it yet but I'm sure there's something out there.

I use an Archos Gmini 220 20gb

h596a.jpg

Has line-in and built-in mic for recording and works like a regular usb drive without proprietary software. Also fits in my car's cup holder perfectly :)

This was my first one:

I went through 5 of them... they kept mysteriously locking up!

Then I had this:

Then I had this:

The headphone jack stopped working :(.

I refuse to buy another mp3 player :lol.

That was my first too. I actually bought it off of fellow GAFfer Nomoment. :D
Glad to hear you remember, Wellington!

I remember having to pawn it off for a GBA at the time. Man, were those meager times. :lol

I'm still rocking this in my car. Sure the left audio clip on the headphone jack doesn't work. Sure the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore. It get's frozen every couple of weeks. Somehow I can't seem to get rid of it. (I'm using the dock in my car hooked up to the cigarrete lighter, and rca > headphone jack>tape adapter and I always keep a paperclip handi in my storage comparment to reset it, :lol)

This is my actual first MP3 player:

Came from Nike, had 64 MB of storage. From there I moved to the Archos 20 GB before getting the Rio Karma. Now I have an iPod Nano 2G for working out (with Nike+), an iPhone, and a 160GB iPod Classic.

Oh Shit, I had the same experience with both of these. My Dell Jukebox worked great, but the internal headphone jack in the player disconnected from the rest of it, making it a paperweight.

Had the Diamond Rio 32 as well. It fit like 4 or 5 songs :lol
Still...early adopting ftw! :D

Current one is ipod touch 16gigs <3

I also had the first Diamond Rio, bought an extra 32 MB card when I purchased it. Tough little machine, bet if I pulled it out from whatever box in the closet it's in it would still work just fine.

My first MP3 player was 32 or 64MB. Not sure though. Don't even remember the brand. All i remember was it's some German/European company. It was green in color and features side scrolling text.

I remember storing max of 5 or 6 songs and drool at the "portablilty" :lol
Transfer took an hour or so though :lol

Wow, some of these MP3 players look like they must have the most cumbersome navigation systems.

Here was my first. I loved it to death. I thought that having six 700 MB CDs worth of CDs was awesome. I took it out a couple weeks ago. The CD player still works, but the remote might be FUBARed.

Then I got a 4 GB iPod mini 2 1/2 years ago when I bought my PowerBook. I replaced the battery in it in November. I think the hard drive crapped out on me last month. I was considering replacing the MicroDrive with a Compact Flash card, but it wasn't worth the money. I just decided to hold off and buy an 80 GB iPod when my tax return came in. I picked it up on Monday. :D

My first mp3 player was a cheap lil' one with 64MB of flash memory. Can't remember the brand for the life of me... But I eventually gave it to a friend, and replaced it with a 20GB Archos Jukebox. Loved it, worked fine for a while, but the HDD eventually failed me. Replaced it a few months after with a 60GB iPod... Which I eventually sold.

I would like to get another one. I'm thinking about just holding out for a new Cell phone with decent multimedia capabilities, like the iPhone or Xperia later this year, instead of getting another dedicated mp3 player.

This was my first:

You have to burn 120MB MiniCDs for it, it was great, still works perfect.

Then I bough an iPod Mini 4GB and now I have an iPod touch 8GB.

I remember back in 1998, one kid I knew bought one of those Rio MP3 players... had something like 16mb or 32mb, some low amount like that. We were all like "What would you ever need an MP3 player for?" at the time. But look where technology has taken us.

My first and only was a 3rd generation iPod classic (20 gb)...

My first:

Riovolt SP90. Was pretty decent for its time. I also hacked the firmware so it acted like its more expensive brother, the SP250. :D

My first. Rover 64MB Flash drive that played MP3's. Ran on a single AAA battery. Bought it from newegg or tigerdirect when I was in highschool and interning at a summer camp. Ah,16 songs in my pocket. Don't think I went a day without this thing in jacked into my ear. Loved it.
As you can see it's been damaged to hell, and the MP3 functionality no longer works, but after all these years it's my primary flash drive (transferring docs to and from computers, ect,ect.). Even gave a presentation last night with it.

Realized 16 songs sucked, got a 256MB Sandisk MP3 player with FM tuner. Lost it at an airport.

Got a 30gig Ipod Video. Dropped it, no longer works.

Got a 8gig Ipod Nano. No idea where it is.

Plan on buying a Ipod Touch in a couple of weeks.

I don't remember the name or make of my first one, but it was a massive harddrive with a shitty design and UI. Not the Archos from what I gather.

Then I went to:

mswalkman.jpg

Awesome size, little space. Loved the thumbstick navigation model (found on older BlackBerries).

to:

(only picture I could find)
zenxtra.jpg

Much better harddrive size and another thumbstick navigation model. Full of total win.

to:

muvo4gig.jpg

Amazing player. Battery life that would last for fucking ever (I would leave it playing all day and it wouldn't even be drained to half. Interface navigation blew all sorts of ass because of that little circle on the front.

to:

10669610.jpg

Had to try an apple player, and this was the one I went for. Form factor was hotness and reminded me of the tall, then Sony I used to use. Wheel navigation was a nice step up. Sounds quality seemed to be a bit less, but fitting into the 5th pocket of my jeans was awesome.

to my current:

zune_80gb.jpg

Fucking amazing player. A little beefier than it's apple counterparts, but the interface is really fluid, and the sound quality feels like it took another bump up.

... Best wishes. o_o

I think it's entirely odd how I'm such a tech head and love gadgets and yet I bought my first mp3 player last month. To top it off, it's a shitty 512mb sansa player I bought only to transfer a couple This American Life episodes or a couple Brodeos to listen to on long trips. I've never owned a serious mp3 player, one capable of holding a decent music collection. Fission Mailed.

Wow, just checked out the 80gb Zune review at Cnet. Is there ANY reason that I should shell out an extra $130 for the 16gb Ipod Touch?

Because they are two very different products??
This.

The Touch and the Zune are hitting totally different consumer needs.
