It's been 10 long years - MP3 players

You know what, music has come so far.

When I was in highschool I had a discman and a CD wallet that weighs like 20 pounds.

Now, I have my WM6 professional cell phone with 8GB of memory. Web access, NES emulator, SCUMMVM, ebook reader, email, MP3, decent camera, everything.

Not only that, I have stereo bluetooth headset... I can go to the gym, leave my phone in my pocket and rock out with no wires getting in the way.. and I can take phone calls and annoy everyone around me.

In short: technology rocks.

I was kind of LTTP.

My first mp3 player was a cell phone IIRC, circa 2000.

In 2004 i bought an iPod mini 4GB. I think it has some sector damaged of its tiny HDD, but when i find a cheap one, i'll replace it with a CompactFlash Card, making a 16 or even 32GB iPod mini.

I'll probably also stick it to car use tho, since for listening music on the go i use my Nokia N73. Much more convenient.

give a stupid response...

Exactly!!

Had you asked about, say the 80GB iPod Classic, your question would make a lot more sense. But considering the Touch is so much more than just a media player, the comparison of it to the Zune isn't really the same.

It's kind of like asking: "Hey guys! I just read a review of the Toyota Corrolla! Is there ANY reason I should pay more for a Corvette?"

Yes!

Considering I know nothing about the Zune and the guy above me posted a picture of it (quite sexy, looks like the Touch) I was looking for general differences. You know, feedback.

Hey, the question wasn't directed at you so stay out of the discussion.

Hey! Exactly! Awesome! Thanks! Hey!

I figured it was open for discussion, since you didn't quote anyone. But since you don't know anything about either of the devices, I'll break it down for you a bit.

Zune 80GB obviously has much more storage, a slick interface, and is great at playing music and video. iPod Touch clearly has considerably less storage, but also has an amazing interface, better than the Zune's thanks to the touchscreen imo, but it also goes way beyond just being a media player. It's WiFi allows you to surf the web, on an amazing portable browser, check your e-mail, use Google Maps, watch YouTube videos, and more.

Essentially it comes down to more storage and very good media player for less money vs. less storage, very good media player, with some amazing other abilities as well for more cash.

Simple enough for you?

Here's my first beauty, and it still works like a charm (use it almost every day):

If image doesn't work ^

Since buying it, I've amassed over 100 gigs of music (I listen to all of it, believe it or not) and I can't find a good MP3 player to hold it all. :lol

That was my first mp3 too! I think I still have it in a drawer somewhere actually... went from it to the 60GB:

because I wanted to start watching movies on the go and wanted a nice sized screen.

I'd be interested in a Zune or Ipod Touch except that the Touch doesn't have big enough space yet, and neither the Touch or Zune support .avi AFAIK which is the format that most of the stuff i download or rip comes in.

Yes, open discussion. Saying someones question is 'stupid' is a bit...nescient

Big toss up. I want a large amount of storage for music and videos...on the other I like the capabilities on the Touch. Might go with the Archos 604 30GB. Best of both worlds. Dislike the fact that you have to pay for the browser and codec to to play AVI files.

Thank you.

Anyone here have a Cowon D2?

I'm looking at that or the IPod Touch as my next mp3 player.

If only the Touch had an SD slot it would be such a better deal...

Your snarky response to my first post prompted the 'stupid' comment. And of course I later admitted that my answer was also 'stupid'.

But lets start over. ;) Archos makes some very cool players too. I have one of their older 20 GB media players, and it's still a nifty device. They're kind of overlooked in the market here, but they are affordable and offer a lot of bang for the buck.

Also, don't forget the Touch gets a major upgrade in June when the new firmware drops, the App Store opens, and suddenly you can do a lot more with it. Hell, you'll even be able to play Spore on it in September. The SDK is going to make both the Touch and the iPhone even more amazing.

first mp3 player i ever purchased was an ipod, 20gb, 3g i think. a friend of mine had a rio mp3 player back in like 2000 or so and i was like lol you can hold 10 songs on that thing while i had an mp3 cd player which was sweet. broke my first ipod after i dropped it while riding my bike to my car in college. lasted me a good 3 years, so i was pretty satisfied. now i have a nano, though i sort of want an ipod touch.

damn, I've only been using mp3 players since like 2004 and I have used like 6 different ones. All Ipods too haha.

I was on the old MiniDisc bandwagon for ages, totally loved it. But after numerous drops and bashes it was pretty much shafted so got an iPod, 4th gen 20gig I think. That eventually died on its arse, devastating. Currently on another iPod, this time 2nd gen Nano. Fits nicely in my pocket and is good for the car, and I update my playlists every few days.

first mp3 player was gigabeat G20 Sapphire blue.

gb203.jpg

currently using gigabeat G40 L.E. Turquoise.

next one will be sony flash 32Gb whenever they're out (dec 2008?)
I'm definitely not going for less.

Same. But I hated mine. And it broke a week later. I returned it to Amazon, and instead got an MPIO per a GAFers suggestion:

It turned out to be a fantastic player and it works till this day. I got a 3G 10GB iPod about 18 months after, though.

Edit: Oh shit! I totally forgot about the tiny little 64MB Yepp that I had. It was about the size of a Tomagotchi. It came in between the Muvo and Mpio, I think.

Holy crap, I found it!

Wow, just checked out the 80gb Zune review at Cnet. Is there ANY reason that I should shell out an extra $130 for the 16gb Ipod Touch?
NAND Flash?

well, i mean, i'd still say get a 32GB Zen instead, since HDD's are played out.

My first and only mp3 player. Awesome design but the software for it sucked. I still think its one of the best looking MP3 players and it came out back in early 05.

Next mp3 player will be either a 2nd or 3rd gen zune...depends if i feel it urgent to get a 2nd gen this summer...
