It's just me or are Youtubers getting boring?

A lot of them are getting real boring and the ones starting up are damn annoying trying to hit every youtuber cliche possible. A large percentage of them turn out to be racist homophobes or have an incident they have "apologized" for.

The only channels I completely watch anytime they upload something is SBFP, somecallmejohnny, and The Super Gaming Bros.

TheradBrad I used to watch all the time, but now just occasionally.

Damn, I forgot about MetalJesusRocks when I posted earlier in this thread. Yeah, he's a great guy. Not just likeable and informative but really wholesome as well, which actually makes for a nice breath of fresh air in the Youtube space. His chill nature and enduring positivity go a long way for me.
He has a really good video recently which is him and Paul talking about their early days working at Sierra, it's worth watching if you are interested in the early PC gaming days.

Only thing I watch on YouTube with any regularity is the jimquisition.

Everything else is just....... awful.

Sometimes watch Scott Manly on the rare occasion he isn't being an unbearable twat.

I saw a video from that channel yesterday and it just seemed like a Grover wannabe cheerleading Nintendo?

Maybe I'm, not the target demo.

Some of his most popular videos are brutal take downs of Nintendo's recent treatment of certain franchises. Though, yeah, if a positive video about Nintendo is "cheerleading" to you then you're not in the target market.

I still watch quite a bit of Youtube channels today like:

DarksydePhil Detractor Channels(like quite a bit of them)
Cinemassacre
Console Wars
Digital Foundry
My Life In Gaming
Retro Core
On the Stick
Renegade Operative
Cygnus Destroyer/LJN Defender
TheRetroReplay
Game Sack
CinemaSins
Double Toasted
Red Letter Media
RookerVision
Censored Gaming
LordBBH
WatchMojo
KOSDFF tk
ralphthemoviemaker
Movies2GamesReviews
Beta64

There's still more channels I watch, but yeah, I watch more than enough youtubers to not get bored on that site.

I think it is more that they are becoming the same, somebody finds a niche and gains sub and likes and smaller YouTubers (and others) see this and try and copy it.

I give my subs a clear out once a year or so, I think the best thing is to keep the number as small as you can, I watch a lot of car YouTubers for example:

Shmee150
MrJWW
Salomondrin
Misha Charoudin
Supercars of London
Seen Through Glass
Sophia Calate
Harry's Garage
Jay Leno

one or two others but those above all know each other (not Harry and Jay) and do collaborations every now and then, and 90% of the time they are all doing something different, this weekend it was the Goodwood Festival of Speed and five of them were there, there was some overlap but they mostly did videos of different things, and as they all know each other they I assume know that they have to do their own thing and make their content different even if they are making a video about the same thing.

I agree that in gaming it is a little different and harder to do, there are only a few actual people in gaming that I watch, some specific ones like Don Joewon Song for Forza and BattlefrontUpdates for StarWars and others for other games, then of course Digital Foundry and The Know, but for gaming personality's I only watch a couple, HappyConsoleGamer, Kaceytron and I know he is not welcome here boogie2988 (who I have been going off the last couple of months) but was one of the first I watched, I have just discovered Last Gamer though.

I just think that if you find a few YouTube channels in a genre and make sure they are all different, giving different views, opinions and style that you get a better all round view and also you are better informed and also entertained.

I think that the best Youtubers just keep evolving and they have to so they stay relevant thus gain subs, views and likes and this give an incentive to keep going, I would think that creating content and posting it and it only gets few views is incredibly disheartening.

What's It Like Being A YouTuber? via MrJWW, I don't know if what they say in this video is true, but they are all successful YouTubers so I think it must be true.

EASY STEPS for you to get YOUR DREAM JOB! via Salomondrin a self made millionaire.(there is adult language in this video). don't listen to friends that say 'it will be too hard, you won't make it' instead listen to the people that have made it! and honestly I need to listen myself more to the latter than the former.

I really enjoy That One Video Gamer and SomecallmeJohnny. Lord Carnage is hilarious as well. Kinda Funny games is always decent.

For my upcoming podcast YouTube is only one part of the plan. I think it's important to be diverse with my deployment plan. Ultimately, I'll be running my own website.

That's what happens when you have the same people shouting the same BS over and over and over, nonstop, no breaks for different material. Surprised it took you (OP) this long to realize this.

Ultimately, as increasing bored as I may be towards YouTubers at the end of the day tho what I feel most of all is concern for them.

YouTube is so many of their fulltime jobs, and they're also young. Do they have a backup plan for when the Let's Play/Streaming fad loses steam? It has a good chance of happening, and they need to be ready for when the revenue starts to plummet. I hope they're being responsible and are building up savings. YouTube could implode tomorrow and certain people will be just fine, but that is the true success stories where they've made millions. Everyone else, it's a paycheck to paycheck job.

I'm hoping that the recent "Ad-pocalypse" has been a wake up call for many to start thinking about the future. That's the scary thing with newer professions like this, we have no idea what the job security is.

It seems like the kinds of YouTubers I watch always changes. Before, it was all Game Grumps and Achievement Hunter, then Funhaus came along, now I mostly watch Oneyplays.

I do my own videos, but I don't want to fake a personality. My hobby of videos actually helped me with my shyness, and made me a bit more confident. Even though YouTube is a bit oversaturated, I still have fun doing these things after work.

To OP, the recent Yakuza 0 LP from SBF/Sw1tcher has been pretty good (still haven't fully caught up on that). I would recommend looking for other channels if it's not doing anything for you though. I went on a channel binge from the last YT thread here on GAF and I've found some great stuff.

I think the gaming content on Youtube has 2 categories. The informative content, and "entertaining" content. I tend to go with the informative stuff these days like retrospectives, no clip documentaries, video reviews, etc. Playthroughs or lets plays are really not my thing.

I think this is a good way to categorize things. It's not all just shouting, overreacting LPers playing blind/for the first time.

I also don't really like blind let's plays. That said, informative ones, like most of supergreatfriend's LPs (like his current Killer7 one), or Matt Plays NMH1 or Ratchet and Clank developer commentary or just any LP that's a bit more than just somebody playing the game are what I often look out for.

I still listen to the Friendcast often, but SBF LP's are mostly just background noise for me now. Nothing on them, by all accounts they are swell dudes, but maybe I'm somewhat outgrowing the "Lets Play" in general.

I do watch a lot of longform and analytical stuff now, and there is plenty of it, Bunnyhop, Noah Gervais, Joseph Anderson and the like.

I also watch a smattering of film reviewers, and occasionally some game reviewers like GGGmanlives and ACG.

my thanks

I have a few that I like. MrKravin, John Wolfe, and ManlyBadassHero all play horror/adventure games and don't act like PDP or Markiplier. They're great for me because I'm terrible at horror games but still want to see them played, but don't want a grown man screaming in my ear. I also like Game Grumps, mostly for the banter as background noise. It is a pretty saturated market but if you spend some time trying different channels you may be able to find someone who suits your preferences.

It's the occasional high horse they get themselves on that gets irritating.

"I can't take it any more, I need to speak my mind..."

Yeah ok, bro.

I've noticed this due to the ad policy.

Lots of you tubers are basically becoming targeted ad makers.

It sucks and I wish there was a better alternative.

As people have said, it is kind of a broad topic to talk about. I've never been a big Let's Play kinda viewer, but I do enjoy the more informative gaming Youtube channels, or those that do a lot of analysis, ie. Game Maker's Toolkit, Matthew Matosis. I recently started watching a bit of Super Bunnyhop, I've been enjoying his vids. Might use this thread for more recs! There are also review channels, like ACG, EZA, etc.

...I mean, then you also have something like McElroys and Monster Factory, which I think single-handedly justifies the invention of the internet.

Huge rec for Jon of Many A True Nerd, though - he does a lot of self-imposed challenges, along with regular Let's Plays. I think it was his permadeath run of Fallout: New Vegas and the DLCs that got me into the channel in the first place? Jon's got a great sense of humor, and he has always got interesting things to say about the games he's playing. More importantly, he manages to make the inevitable repetition of a Let's Play constantly engaging. My favorite runs are the You Only Live Once F:NV run, and the No Kill F:NV pacifist run - I had no idea how much of F:NV could be completed that way. Jon also has a ton of non-Fallout things. The No Guns run of Mass Effect 1 was fantastic, too.

Sometimes you should look for channels that are more to your tastes. They exist but you need to look for them. Some are smaller channels. I can't generalize all YouTubers as being the same anymore because I do most of my viewing on YT these days and I keep finding new channels I enjoy.

Tried watching some Game Grunps yesterday and realized I can't stand them anymore because of Arin. I'm tired of him hating on games because he's bad at them or he decided to play the shittiest port of the game. At least when the SBF are bad it's because they know they are being dumb and it's funny.

I mostly watch positive or informative videos these days. I like Arlo, Summoning Salt, Beta 64, Mark Brown and the like. Recently I found a new guy called Freelance Nintendo too. His videos are pretty rough but nicely researched and really interesting. I like this kind of niche stuff.

For me it's too much of a chore to find vids that are of interest. The vast majority of content just isn't for me and the good stuff is like a needle in a haystack. The average style of youtubers does little more then irritate me.

Even if do find something I like it's rare I find there's much more on the same channel worth keeping up with.

Used to watch AVGN and Cinemassacre but I never did actively follow a lot of youtubers. Still don't. My little brother follows a bunch of channels so I suppose it is different for each person.

Twitch and my degrading attention span killed YouTubers for me.

I'll watch Jim Sterling on Mondays most days. I'll watch Kripp posting Hearthstone stuff if the video title intrigues me. But to sit down and watch a Let's Play? I just can't.

I like Team Four Star's gaming channel. I also watch Helloween4545 and any Polygon video that has a Mcelroy brother in it. But thats pretty much it.

I can't say I never watch videos on YouTube. However I am not 'bound' to specific channels/uploaders. I just try to look up what I feel like and I just click the one that looks most promising.

I tend to flow and change with YouTubers depending on my mood in terms of the games I want to watch, I'd say the YouTubers I've followed most consistently over the years are probably Arumba, SergiuHellDragoon and MassiveG. If Jeff Gerstmann made his home game show a regular thing, I would watch that too.

I just watch the smaller channels like Ice Poseidon/Asian Andy etc now since they're more daring. Why watch LPs when you can play the damn games, go watch movies/tv shows/dramas or something lmao.

maybe this is a good time to pick up a book. do you have any interest in art? photography? film?

there are lots of artistic mediums that have decades of decent and intelligent discussion and theoretical frameworks. videogames is still a baby, most of the commentary is bottom tier compared to these more established works.

Uh ok? It's the same shit everyone else says about you so continue to ignore it I guess? I don't really care as I wasn't expecting you to change in some way from a random post. Keep doing you bud.

I just realized Maximillian kinda looks like Bob from Twin Peaks. lol

I don't really watch anyone regularly. I watch things I'm interested in a bit but I don't watch things where people talk a lot. May watch things with well thought out information but I rarely watch full episodes of anything.

So many videos are so forced to continue the grind. For example you can tell that metal Jesus rocks doesn't really have a good plan most the time, nothing so rich or filled with content, just some random idea and the same basic things over and over. Stand there and talk about a game randomly with whoever he has asked to come join him. They often like and talk up games as if they are far behind my gaming tastes.

One of thier shows was about current gen not sucking and half the games they mentioned were not ones I'd choose. Like dragon age inquisition

No mention of soma, Yakuza, tlg, Nier etc

I don't think he really plays games as much as he just talks them which is completely fine. Just doesn't seem like a show that holds much water for me.

I still enjoy indepth analysis videos and some channels that put a bit more time and thought into their videos but I think I'm pretty much done with stuff like LP. It's not so much that they got boring, but rather I've grown tired of them.

Only thing I watch on YouTube with any regularity is the jimquisition.

Everything else is just....... awful.

Sometimes watch Scott Manly on the rare occasion he isn't being an unbearable twat.

Let's not forget super best friends that just insist on shouting over each other for 20 to 30 minutes without stopping.
