It's sad seeing what Machinima.com became

Hey, guys - I work at Inside Gaming now - started a couple months ago. And we're trying to do more interesting stuff there. Obviously, there is a lot of resistance given that the old guys left and made FunHaus, and the channel was dead, etc, etc.

But, anyways - I started a series called Pushing Buttons that tries to give a deeper look at an issue in gaming. I used to work at Insomniac for almost 5 years, so I think that gives me a unique perspective on some of this stuff.

I understand that this could be seen as self-promotion, but I just wanted to let everyone who is like "MACHINIMA IS CANCER!" know that I actually think we are going in a more positive direction.

Thanks! Check the series out and drop some feedback if you want!

Oh yeah think I remember you from Sunset Overdrive. Personally I don't think the issue is Inside Gaming itself, while it sucks that Matt left recently, it's still in a good state. It's more of the other stuff on the channel (considering its weird that in Machinima, there isn't really that much Machinima) should be on secondary channels like ETC and Steve and Larson.

Does that guy who would always wear a Master Chief helmet to hide his face still work there?

That's who I think of when I think Machinima.

That dude now works for Rooster Teeth with his their own thing called funhaus.
Don't ask me anything about that group 'cause the only reason I know them is because I saw that guy you mentioned's face and that's it.
I would have made this tread a few months ago if I wasn't still a junior because I checked them out out of morbid curiosity and say what I pretty much expected and worse.

I loved the (early) all your history series. Their final episode detailing where it went wrong was a bummer.

That final episode sort of sums up the problem with Machinima and almost all of these massive content networks that popped up on Youtube.

Every single time something doesn't go over well, a bad change is made, generally "bad content" is done, it's almost always the fans fault. That the fans didn't like it, and it's their fault for not liking it. They they're supposed to just eat this shit up.

It's almost always a "vocal minority" that caused the issue. The creators refused to believe that they were at fault. It had to be the fans that were wrong. It's hilariously insulting to the very fanbase that allowed them to become as large as they did. And eventually once you've eaten your own bullshit for long enough, your ego gets to the point where you think you can get away with anything (see the Fine Brothers stuff that tried to go down).

The rogue "indie"esque groups became the very monolithic corporate driven entities they were trying to set themselves apart from in the first place.

This is what a lot of video game sites are turning into. I have lost count of the number of times that Gamespot stuff has appeared in Google Now that had nothing to do with video games. People that are more interested in comic book movies already have sites to read and YouTube channels to watch. There is no way that sites are getting adequate traffic for their gaming coverage if they are resorting to this crap.

Arby n the Chief and other Halo 3 machinimas, Freeman's mind, sonic for hire, and Sanity Not Included were the best.

They were actually "watchable" until they decided to ditch the original Inside Gaming staff, just to realize months later they fucked up and tried to resurrect the brand to no avail. Hell, just a days ago the reignited their Machinima Versus, who was pioneer for their time, and just because they opened a eSports Consultant Agency. Nothing bad with creating more jobs, but holy hell how have they fallen over the years, to the point where Machinimas are not existing anymore (besides the SFM shorts, which I'm not really sure they should be called Machinimas)

To be fair, I don't think that's Machinima.com's fault. There was a massive gold rush after the success of stuff like Red vs. Blue, but that's very clearly the outlier rather than the rule; in particular the thorny copyright issues were enough to stop a lot of natural growth.

The people doing machinima now seem like dedicated people who want to tell stories with the tools they have, to a small but appreciative audience. In some ways that's *good*, as otherwise it would have become clickbait and garbage-infested had it continued to grow. It is a shame that SFM mostly homogenized a lot of it, and I don't think I've seen any non-pornography uses of it.

I'm always so confused as to what they even are now. They used to be the channel for all gaming youtubers, but then that changed to being Polaris and machinima seemed to just stop being relevant. Every now and again the Best Fruends will mention that they're with them and I'll suddenly remember they exist.

Who else actually works for them anymore? The Best Friends, Steve and Larson, anyone else really?

SBFP doesn't do much for them anymore. That's when I stopped following them.

I am of the belief that Two Best Friends Play videos are some of the funniest game videos on the internet. I love them now too, but there's something special about a good ol' 12 minute Machinima video.

They still do things for them, but they work in seasons now, they probably gonna be starting another season for them soon.

Hi Brandon!

All I know is that Arby and the Chief was awesome. After the movie I don't remember if it continued but really at that point you didn't need to continue.

Damn, can't believe how far Machinima has fallen. Pre talent exodus, it was one of my favorite channels with SNI, Arby n' the Chief, All Your History, the top 10 lists by Anoj and Steve + Larson, and all the little Machinima series they would host.

I remember watching Arby n the Chief and Freeman's mind religiously back in the day. I'm pretty sure they're what got me REALLY into gaming. It's sad to see them go the way of all big gaming channels (see: rooster teeth (and everything they absorbed like screw attack) and polaris).
Also those types of thumbnails (Cartoon font caption with stupid face) are crimes against humanity.

Does Youtube force uploaders to make those dumb as fuck thumbnails?

Because those are kinda the norm when I'm watching stuff, seriously.

Goofy faces with big words will make kids click on the thumbnails. The reason why every youtube channel does it is because it works.

I hate CLICKBAIT titles that capitalize RABDOM WORDS???

All the video titles =

Used to watch all their stuff religiously in highschool, but that was like 8 years ago. They had a lot of good shows and talented folks working there at the time, its where TBFP got it's start, and I fondly remember watching stuff like Sanity, Inside Gaming, Arby n' The Chief, Freeman's Mind, and All Your History.

I remember I stopped watching when a lot of those folks either left or got laid off. The rise of Twitch and streaming pretty much killed their gameplay video channel too, but I think ultimately I just outgrew a lot of the content taste wise. Kinda sad to see the channel devolve in to what it is today, but it's not entirely unexpected given the nature of YouTube.

This kind of dumb nonsense with clickbait thumbnails is par for the course for 95% of the shit on YouTube.

Man, hours can disappear if you're watching house tracks. Bombarded with thumbnails of semi naked women. The first comment is almost always "thumbnail brought me here" lol.

I'm sad that Machinima.com is no longer a website about highlighting different machinima creations from games like Quake and the like. You know, when their domain name made sense.

I didn't even know they still existed. Used to be affiliated with them (and some people who were signed with them) but left in 2010 when things just went to shit.

Hadn't realized they were still making those. The Skyrim videos were hilarious.
