It's time to choose the greatest song from Sonic R

Goddamn, some Monday morning nostalgia. Sonic R was my jam.

Back in Time and Can You Feel The Sunshine are the two best.

That isn't just limited to the Jacques material, either, which is a good thing. The Japanese branch of Sega also had a bunch of neat stuff with a lot of sampling, musical tone with some levity, a concentration on hip-hop, dance, pop, etc. But it isn't necessarily limited to Sega, either, too. Mixed Mode CD audio was seen in Ys and Tengai Makyo, so it's generally something I like to associate with the PCE, early PC games, the Sega CD, the Sega Saturn, etc.

Despite the fact that looping was an issue in this era (because optical discs were still limited in terms of spindle speed, so the player couldn't access the data again unless the track stopped playing), and the laser having to move back to the start of the track (and that's why you had this gap whenever a theme ended and had to restart), it still was a push for better quality instrumentation in VGM.

I mean, they tried with Dragon's Lair in 1983, but I think that sort of thing might have carried on into arcade games and better samples/higher-quality music with respect to that until the CD formats became a little more popular.

Sega were pretty good with music even in the 16bit era, but they really got into the experimentation of the times with the 32bit era. I mean heck they even started playing with advanced music as early as 32X, Chaotix as a game sucks for the most part, but the OST for that is truly stunning.

Sonic Team were crazy about music, see all the work they did on NiGHTS, I mean they could of just slapped level themes on it and called it a day, but the themes for NiGHTS actually changes depending on how you play the game. Burning Rangers had a ton of character themes, Sonic R's OST wasn't really strictly their work, but I think it did a lot to convince Sonic Team to work really hard on the music for Sonic Adventure.

The mid 90's were a really exciting time to be a gamer overall, 3D was the new fronter and everyone wanted to take a stab at it and try new things. Sure a few older companies that failed to keep up got lost, but there was that feeling that, while games were getting a bit more advanced and the industry a little bigger, people could really explore and make things without worry of going bust.

They all rub my brain in all the right ways, but I'll easily choose Work It Out, with Diamond a very close second, and everything a planck's distance of third.

It's Diamond in the Sky and you're lying to yourself if you think otherwise. Back in Time is the closest of close seconds.

Where's the Diamond in the Sky love?

You're the one that makes me feel so hiiiiiiiiiigh
Just like the diamonds in the skyyyyyyy
I never want to hear you say goodbyyyyyyye
'cause you're my diamond in the skyyyyyyy
mah Diggeh
Deft Beck and Coxy are cool too

Living in the City then, since the superior "All of Them" answer is banned.

So many great memories playing this game, but for it's music and certainly not gameplay. I would love vocal themes in Sonic games if they were all like Sonic R's, not that rock/rap junk that the Dreamcast era gave rise to.

3D Blast is sorta in boat. Crap gameplay, but some great music made it memorable.

Living in the city. I also love the stage. Collecting all hidden shit and still winning 1st was a pain.

Good memories.

My vote goes to Can you feel the sunshine.

Man, that song is catchy. Whenever Sonic R gets mentioned this is the song that pops in my head over and over. LOL.

Super Sonic Racing, but I love them all! I used to obsess over this soundtrack, my play counts for each are in the 200s! My bro made fun of me for liking this type music with it's cheezy lyrics (I guess they kinda are) but it is definitive 90s music.

Anyways Sonic R should have sold more in the States:
44,000 (according to NPD)

So many thiiiings for ussss to seeee...
THERE'S NO TIME
So many thiiiiiiiings for us to do...
BUT. THERE'S. NO. TIME.

I'll have to say all of them. Can't really choose as I have too much childhood attachment to all of them. (R PC and Sonic CD were the first Sonic game's I've owned. Sonic 1 was the first I played.)

I'm a rebel, Greenscar Coldman. I don't play by your rules.

THERE'S NOTHING I DON'T KNOW
THERE'S NOTHING TO DECIDE
APART FROM WHERE WE WANT TO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

TAKE ME HOME
TAKE ME ANYWHERE YOU WANT TO GO
TO A PLACE WHERE WE BOTH KNOWWWWWWWWWWWW

Yeah I'm going with Back in Time.

Flawless soundtrack. If it only had like...30 more songs? Yeah that'd be enough I think.

This is the greatest thread. This is one of the greatest soundtracks.

I'm gonna throw my hat behind Can You Feel the Sunshine.

It's so hard to choose.

WHERE YOU CAN FEEL MY HEART JUST RAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEE

I love this soundtrack.

everybody

EVERYBODY

EVERYBODY

SUPER SONIC RACCCCCCCINNNNNGGGGGGG

LIVIN IN THE CITY was my theme song for all ten years I spent in Tokyo and DAMMIT I SURVIVED

I also kept the dream alive

I love this topic so much. God, this is like choosing a favorite child. But, if pressed... I... have to go with Diamond in the Sky. That chorus and those feels. It just packs so much hope and wistfulness into its melody and lyrics.

I actually think Super Sonic Racing is kinda overrated compared to Diamond in the Sky. ::raises flame shield::

This soundtrack is just... it isn't fair how excellent it is.

Easily Can you feel the sunshine, such a great song. Used to have it as my Alarm.

I don't really like Number One though.

Anyone know of a way to play the game now? I have a game disc for windows, but it can't install anymore, so is there an emulated or otherwise way to play it?

Oh, and thanks to the person who posted the all stars racing transformed sky sanctuary mix, SS is my favorite theme ever, love that it got some love in both generations and transformed.

Oh, and super sonic racing all the way.

Super sonic raaaaayyyyyCCCCCCCIIIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG! OH! YEAH! OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Man, I'm pretty sure I played this game off a Sega collection I got in a cereal box as a kid or something.

Making a decision is way too hard! Probably Work it Out, but just barely.

It's on Sonic Gems Collection, so if you've got a PS2 or Gamecube/Wii or something that can emulate either of those buying that disc and throwing it in would be the easiest way.

Living in the City.

No question. It's so good.

But Work It Out is GREAT for gym mixes.

But really:
ALL OF THEM, SCREW YOUR RULES.

Not having played the games, only listening to the soundtrack here for the first time...

Gotta say Living In The City. But Work It Out comes in a very close second place.

"Can You Feel the Sunshine" and "Number One" are on a different level....IMO...I honestly can't choose but one of those...Every song is sooo good tho mannnn

My favorite is Living in teh City, closely followed by Diamonds in the Sky.

But man, I really dislike Work it Out. Not really sure why.

My god, there is no greater truth on Earth than this
except for Diamond in the Sky being the best

I have never gotten as good of a workout as I have when listening to Work It Out. Also, any of the Unleashed day tracks on a treadmill.

Green Scar this thread may just be your greatest contribution to GAF ever.

For my tastes, it's probably Living in the City, but that's probably got more to do with my nostalgia for nighttime neon glow than the sing itself. Ah, the memories of the hopeful era of the Saturn.

Living in the City is definitely my favorite track. By the way, TJ Davis (the singer of the tracks) performed a few songs live at a Sonic fan event 5 years back, there are videos of it up on youtube.

I FEEL LIKE I AM BEING LIED TO

Hahahah I'm glad someone else thinks the same thing. I had this game on PC as a kid and those lines confused me too.

Sonic R, Sonic 3-D Blast (Saturn) and Sonic Rush are all half-decent Sonic games where the soundtrack is what really makes the game special. Without them, they are mediocre to crap (except Rush which would still be above average).

The music in Sonic R just chills you the fuck out the whole time you're playing it. It's gaming marijuana.

Oh, and my fave is "Work it out" as well. so 90's.

Super Sonic Racing.

The Sonic 3-D Blast soundtrack doesn't get enough recognition.
