ITT: Post the games with the greatest textures

Relative to their release dates, these games really impressed me:

Shenmue II (2001)
Silent Hill 3 (2003)
Max Payne 2 (2003)
Unreal Tournament 2004 (duh)
Half-Life 2 (2004)
Crysis (2007)
Uncharted 2 (2009)

And GTA IV is impressive considering the scale of the game. Other sandbox action games like Godfather and Saints Row 2 look like they are running on older hardware.

Sure, they might not look amazing up close, but that's not how you are supposed to play a game. The textures look amazing from normal distances. Metal looks like real metal.

Is that Killzone? Honestly dont exepct everyone to know what game youre talking about.

Bioshock:

I remember playing the demo and I was just swimming around in the water for a few minutes and was amazed by the effects:

I played some Bioshock on PC last night. Those textures are not good at all. They're barely HL2 quality.

Yeah I see a lot of pretty effects, not a whole lot of super impressive texture work.

Still pretty, no doubt, but not in the sense of what this topic is about (except for the first screen)

Forza 3's Amalfi Coast has some pretty awesome textures. I'm too lazy to upload captures myself, so someone link to some photomode shots of Amalfi.

The problem with UC2 is that the texture quality is not constant. I wish someone would take direct feed pictures of the last area you visit in the game. Low-res crap all over the ground and the walls. It's like they said fuck it, rushed it and used the same textures from the multiplayer map. :P
I would not be surprised if this is because of a lack of memory. Given how obvious it is that they spent a lot of time on the textures, I don't think they'd cut corners for something as obvious as a ground or wall texture every now and then. Especially when you consider how long it was in development.

Anyway, I will post some of what I think are good textures..

They spent a lot of time on the characters in this.

I'm trying to find a pic that represents my point with GTA4, but some awesome use of overlays and great attention to detail to create a very nice looking environment. Yes they are low res, but maybe if someone could find some decent pics of the PC version ;p

TF2.jpg

Versatile textures, meaning they can work at a wide range of resolutions.

Most of the ones people are posting are based on realistic looks.

Again concentrating on textures, given the limit you really can't do better with WoW.

going to sound like a total douche but some people clearly have no fucking idea what textures are. why post on something you know nothing about?

Super Mario Galaxy. But it's a combination of brilliant sounddesign and texture work. It really makes you feel you're on wood, grass, snow, metal or whatever. That's very rare in a game and SMG nails it. If you're simply talking about sharp looking textures, just go to a random pc game. I found Risen's ground textures to be quite good. I even tried to see if I could find repeated textures easily. I could not. They're very natural and sharp looking...on pc.

The textures in SMG are actually pretty damn simple. Unless for you green textures signify to you that you're walking on grass, on their own the textures aren't anything special. SMG looks very good because of a combination of things. Textures are low on that list. It's more to do with the colour pallete.

Errr... what textures? These characters looks almost entirely gouraud-shaded! Unless you're talking about the disgustingly low-res wood textures in the scenary?!

Scenery.. I will try to find a better pic to demonstrate that point ;p

But the scenery matches the overall style well because of the textures.

this made me laugh :lol
- maybe we should have a thread dedicated to what textures are?

TEXTURES.

Not pretty effects, or nice-looking art, or bloom, TEXTURES.

And Uncharted 2 blows anything out of the water.

He chose the wrong pics.

The texture for the ground of the lighthouse landing is very nice.

Yeah I don't see how that is an example of good texturing, the textures on the two sides of the wall there don't match with each other. :P

Well that's kinda what I meant. I know the actual textures aren't that good, but SMG manages to make it feel like the environments have actual texture. I know that's not quite the point of this thread, but I felt it was an understated element of the game. You can have games with the sharpest, most detailed looking textures and they'll still fail to convince me in any way. SMG manages to convince me in spite of its low-res textures.

If you're going to post WoW pics in there, take something that isn't from pre-Burning Crusade with the horrible low lvl gear. :lol

Do we really need to show you what sandbox games looked like on older hardware?

Ugh... hideous. If you want an example of an aging (almost three years older than vanilla WoW) MMO with good texture work on the characters, try FFXI.

The FrostBite engine (from Dice) is a fantastic engine. I don't feel like going around and looking for some screenshots, but Bad Company had some awesome textures.

uncharted 2 is a good example of fantastic textures. resident evil 5, is not. (boat pic anyone?)

kameo is a good example of great textures. WoW? the game was my cocaine for years, but a texture demonstration it is not.

crysis has the best textures in any videogame though. ever.

Why don't you prove it.

And I didn't realize the WoW one was that old :lol

Kameo. First level, which is also the demo.

No but i got this screen officially released by capcom and all. :lol

It still amazes me how capcom could not notice that and just sent that around to gaming sites.

Dude, you posted WoW and TF2. I don't see how you're criticizing anyone else.

I mean, come on. So low res.

Some games have to use low res textures, it's what you do with them that counts.

Hi res textures don't equal the best textures.

thats pretty much what i think the OP wants, the highest resolution most detailed textures :/ i tf2 has great art, so does wow, but the textures suck in both games :/ i mean, i still find both games really attractive though, but i dont know when anybody would stop to look at the texture work on either game.

I dunno, I think WoW is artistically pretty tacky. I can see how its appealing, but it isn't great art or anything. Its got a comic style to it, and they do well with it.

If you want to talk about games with greatest textures artistically, I think that conversation almost begins and ends with the recent Prince of Persia. The quality of the textures is largely fantastic, and the way they use textures to create some of the effects is absolutely astonishing. Then, aside from the technical quality and accomplishments of them, they are absolutely gorgeous. The way the engine renders the game really accentuates it well, too.

If you wanted to show off TF2, then this is the pic to do it:

tf2a.jpg

No, they're not the highest res textures, but they're used so damned well. Of course, you might argue that the lighting is really what makes that pic, so it's not just texture work. Considering it's using the Source engine though, I think TF2 is a marvel.

RE5's quality varies. I haven't seen very many better player model textures out there, other than Uncharted.

edit: as for WoW...it's not very good, artistically. The best looking parts of the game are mostly ripped right out of works like LotR, save a few special places. Dun Morogh is my favorite zone, in terms of design.

That screenshot looks like mud. TF2 is a muddy looking game, imo. I don't think it should be involved with this thread, aside from maybe the philosophy of not having your environments be intricate as a design choice that I believe Valve explicitly made. I remember reading about that. I personally don't agree with it.

I don't see how its a marvel either way.

RE5's player model textures on clothing is decent. on skin, texturing is pretty much non existant. like the tf2 shots. like i said, dont get me wrong, i find tf2 a gorgeous game, and source <3<3<3<3 but yeah, i think we have hugely differing opinions on what good texture work is.
