ITT: We create new mascots and IPs for Nintendo

I can understand people being frustrated that Nintendo hasn't made many new IPs recently that have been pushed as big tentpoles- I mean, I love Xenoblade to bits, and I can get on just fine with the likes of Pullblox or Harmoknight, but they never received an ounce of Mario or Zelda's prominence.

But, again, this kind of doesn't seem applicable now- Splatoon, their brand new competitive shooter IP, has received more promotion at this E3 from Nintendo than anything not named Smash Bros. Multiple indepth looks on Treehouse Live, prominent booth placement, dev interviews in the NDE, Reggie comparing its potential impact on the shooter genre to that of Mario Kart on the racing genre, execs wearing squid pins etc... there's clearly high hopes for the title, and we can probably expect them to push the hell out of it for the next year or so. Yeah, Codename STEAM is going to be more niche by way of its artstyle and its genre, but giving it its own roundtable and special announcement is a show of confidence that Nintendo hasn't given to a new IP since... ooh, Wii Music? Even Xenoblade's spiritual sequel is getting a significant amount of focus, and that's not a franchise that has set the world alight yet.

So yeah, wrong time to make this thread. Nintendo's got some breadth in the scope of its new IP announcements for the first time in a long while.

So the new argument that Nintendo's new IPs don't count is because they may or may not receive sequels?

Made more hilarious by the fact that lots of new Nintendo IPs are getting sequels now

Xenoblade Chronicles X
Crashmo + Pushmo World
Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger
Tomodachi Life
Steel Diver: Sub Wars

these are all sequels to IPs that have launched from 2009 and beyond

Hang on... 5) a game about a raccoon bandit? Sly Raccoon mate. Sly bloody Raccoon. If you're going to harp on about original IPs, it would be good if you didn't knock off one of the competitors main family friendly IPs. And a shooter with a paintgun? Check the E3 streams, you might find a surprise waiting for you there...

Also slightly creeped out at the thought of making a kid-friendly game based on bailiffs collecting money from people who haven't paid up...

Pocket Mayne - you play as a hideous animal creature who captures humans in little capsules and forces them to perform menial tasks like home cleaning and tax filing in competition with one another

You could even turn it into an MMO, but I'm not going to even consider how much that changes the fundamental game design, I'm just gonna act like they're a perfect fit for one another and consider myself a genius who should be employed at Nintendo for having thought of it

At this point it just seems the root of the problem is that Nintendo isn't Sony/EA/Rockstar. That is, they didn't follow the same path Sony and big western 3rd parties did for the last decade and a half - when people want "new IP" from Nintendo in the west, they seem to really mean they want Nintendo to make stuff like God of War, Uncharted, GTA, Gran Turismo, etc.

Nintendo could make a variety of creative new characters until they are blue in the face, but it won't register until they make an expensive AAA game that has a "grown up" theme. By the standards of what a demographic of western players consider "grown up".

This might be the case for some people. I also think a lot of people just want to see adventure games with the scale of Mario and Zelda, but while Nintendo are creating all these great new ideas with original characters, they're also sticking with their established brands for their really big projects. Personally, I don't think that's a bad thing at all as every 3D Zelda game is different to the last, and having it as a well-known franchise ensures that people still pay attention to it. Then, you have entirely original games like Luigi's Mansion and Kid Icarus Uprising that might as well have new protagonists, but work so well with the old ones that it doesn't really matter.

I don't ignore any of them, but let's be honest...how many of them actually evolve into staple IPs on the same tier as Mario, Link, and Samus?

"How many of them actually evolve into staple IPs on the same tier as the most recognizable ground-breaking franchises in videogames since the mid 80's? I mean why doesn't Nintendo just do that?"

How many IPs EVER become like those?
A lot of the current big budget, 5+ million sellers a pop are franchises that are only a gen or two old. It's not too early to say that titanfall, destiny, watch dogs, the division, etc will be relevant franchises going down the road, and it's not like these are legacy ip. People doubt Nintendo's ability to simply go "hey, here's a new game that everyone is going to care about for years to come," whereas it seems like every other major pub can do that.

i feel like a franchise and an iconic character is a bit harder to do. I would love if Inklings from Splatoon become a new iconic character for Nintendo, or the character in Codename Steam.

But it seems like often times people ignore their new characters and only go with what they know.

Horse Bag: A horse who is a bag

Jesus how has no one though of this?

The new captain toad game could also be considered a new ip so you would have 3 new major ips from Nintendo this year.

It seems like the logical next step in Tom Nook's racket. Could very well be an Animal Crossing spin-off.

Horse Bag: A horse who is a bag
I think we need to flesh this pitch out a bit. It's got a lot of potential. Clearly since it's part bag, one of its core mechanics should be centred around collecting. Careful management of where you store things inside it will be key. Space will be limited and you don't want heavy objects to crush the flimsier one. The horse element will bring speed into the equation.

Maybe it's not a new "IP". Wait, doesn't "IP" mean intellectual property? I'm not sure I much like that idea. But um, here's something I'd like to see done with the Super Mario games.

A 2D and a 3D series of Mario games, starring Peach and Daisy.

Something like Super Princess Peach, but better.
The 2D games could be like the New Super Mario games, but have lots of new and different items.

And I'd like the 3D games to be sort of like a story of bravery and comraderie for Peach and Daisy. Instead of just Mario being captured, I'd like it to be more tragic and world changing, like Super Mario RPG and Super Paper Mario.

Something darker rather than lighthearted like Super Princess Peach was. An otherworldly enemy kind of like Smithy comes and messes up the dimensions in a similar way to how Count Bleck did. Except a more Cthulhu like entity, or maybe kind of like Giygas.

Mario is soundly defeated and sent to another dimension. And the people of the Mushroom Kingdom live under a tyranny and darkness and live in despair. And feel hopeless because they don't have a hero.

Peach eventually begins to cope with her despair, and learns not to be a damsel in distress. But a brave hero who will go against this great evil that defeated Mario and Luigi and all of the heroes of the Mushroom Kingdom, no matter what the odds are against her. She enlists the help of Daisy, who feels similar to her.

And they adorn outfits inspired by the plumbers, Mario and Luigi, who saved them many times. To reflect their change and determination.

And it would be a very action packed and difficult game. Borrowing from Super Mario Galaxy, but more frantic and difficult and having more gameplay mechanics. Like a part with rising lava that you have to be very very quick, kind of like in Paper Mario. But more like a speed run. And a boss where there's so many beams of energy on the screen, that it's kind of like playing a 3D version of DoDonPachi.

And it's all about Peach and Daisy learning to become stronger and braver and more determined in the face of the greatest terror their world has ever seen. I don't really like dark settings. But I think I would make a game like that just because it would develop Peach and Daisy's character so much, and the more difficult and desperate of a challenge they had to come, the stronger they would be. And I would like to make a game that would make people really respect them as strong characters and warriors.

Or at least that's the kind of game I imagine I would develop.

There were a whole lot of new big budget IPs from major publishers that crashed and burned in the 7th gen. Making a new IP successful isn't as easy as you're trying to make it sound.
Not every major publisher can do it, just ask SONY.
:P

Well, they certainly failed with The Wonderful 101. Not that failure is unusual.

I honestly thought this E3 might have finally shut people up about this "Nintendo have no new IPs!" bullshit that gets around.

The new bullshit is "But are they gonna be as popular as Mario tho?" Like we can tell that during the week they were announced. lol

I figure since a lot of us seem to have a problem with Nintendo's inability to constantly provide fresh IPs, we try to create some ourselves and hope by some miracle Nintendo (or someone connected to Nintendo) listens. So, in this thread, we come up with ideas for new properties and ideas for Nintendo.

If nothing comes out of this, at least we've exercised some creativity, brainstormed among ourselves, and shared with each other what we'd like to see from Nintendo.

Below are mine (I actually drew a composite sketch for some of these but lost my Art Academy file somehow):

1.) Mini Mii: This game stars a miniature version of you as you navigate through the wonders and horrors of your large scaled version of your home and your past locations. The video game will create the levels from images you upload to the system and break them into platform-style stages.

2.) Mr. (F)rank (P)aul (S)eymour: This will be a first-person-shooter spoof starring a cartoony character that explores a vibrant, colorful world that is threatened by all types of space marines. The character himself isn’t a gun-crazed hero, he’s armed with a paint-gun and other relatively harmless weapons, but the villains, on the other hand, have your traditional FPS arsenal and are intent with destroying the world using them. There are destructible elements in the game, areas that are constantly blown up by their weapons and your job is to stop them and rebuild each stage

3.) Save Everyone’s Coins (SEC): This will be Nintendo’s answer to Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright, but instead of the main character solving violent and/or property crimes, you pursue financial violations and white collar criminals instead, with a heavy emphasis on learning more about stocks, bonds, and even real estate.

4.) Noah (Working Title): This will play EXACTLY like Pikmin, except you use real life animals – mammals and insects – and not Pikmin creatures. For example, one of the early bosses could be a nasty snake, and you have navigate your army of ants/spiders/roaches to defeat it. The animals you control and the bosses you face become more and more complex/threatening as you progress through the game (e.g., snake on the first few levels, a human being or something in the later levels).

5.) Raccoony (Working title): More or less a stealth game, where detection kills you (same way falling into a hole in Mario kills you). You’re a raccoon bandit, going from building to building in an elaborate city-world checkered with platforming goodness. You have to figure out the best way to circumnavigate areas without being detected and then, at the end, solve a puzzle to secure a prize. This will be a time-based game, so bonus points and unlockable content become available depending on the time you clear the stage.

Oh, and of course, when you beat the game, the dimensions go back to normal and you save Mario and everyone. Just like the many times Mario saved Peach and Daisy. And it's ridiculously over the top and epic.

But I don't see why not. Some of the earlier games were about Galaxies and black holes and things like that. Why not have the multiverse?

I like the idea of introducing an enemy that's way too strong for Mario and the other heroes to defeat because it means that Peach and Daisy can be the heroes without doing a simple reversal on Peach being kidnapped, and Mario being kidnapped.

And I'm a little bit tired of Bowser being the enemy all the time. One of the things I like about the RPGs is that they often have an enemy that isn't Bowser. I'd kind of like to make an action RPG game that is kind of between a Mario RPG and the 3D Mario games like Super Mario Galaxy. It would be fun to borrow elements from games like Kingdom Hearts, as well.

And I kind of liked how Smithy from Super Mario RPG was like an alien invader. And how Count Bleck was someone who was messing with multiple universes or dimensions. Something like that mixed with Giygas seems like a good antagonist.

But I must confess, that while I don't like violence, or power fantasies, and wish there were less violent games. I do often seem to imaging games with female protagonists, that are ridiculous over the top and epic power fantasies. I don't know why that is, I don't really seem to enjoy power fantasies about male characters that much. And I'm not a really big fan of violent stuff.

"Press A to jimmy the front door lock."

"Hmm... that sofa and TV look like they're worth a few bells. I'm sure Gracie won't mind us taking them to make up the rest of her debt payment. Maybe the bed too, just to be sure."

"Press B repeatedly to break K.K's legs with a baseball bat. Gee, I sure think we're not going to have any trouble collecting bells after the village hears about this."
