I find everything about the Mother franchise to be so sinister, and I've never even played them. Everything I've seen, heard, and read just makes it seem like it's got this really fun, cutesy, satirical exterior, yet deep down is this horrible, sinister, and dark game that leaves you feeling tense, pressured, and uncomfortable without ever really knowing why.

I should play it some day.

I've never been baked, but I share the OP's definition of "trippy." For me, its anything my girlfriend doesn't understand or appreciates. She's very casual in anything she likes.

My pick is:

Everyday Shooter. This game is so relaxing, I find myself playing it just to unwind.

Hands down REZ HD, throw a couple extra controllers around your body, crank the headphones or surround sound. I was on uppers one night and once those controllers around you get bumping and the music builds up from start to finish theres nothing else like it.

Audiosurf with the right song is trippy to the max. Not necessarily trance/psychedelic music, just something that you like and has a strong rhythmic base. I tried doing the same with Rez HD but it doesn't work in the same way, maybe because shooting stuff distracts me from the music.

I wouldn't say "best", but to this day I still haven't played a game quite like Sentient by Psygnosis. Does anyone even remember that game? You were on a space station called Icarus that was, funnily enough, heading toward the sun. Every now and then you enter a dream and you're in a maze-like garden. Confusing as fuck.

The criminally obscure Spheres of Chaos.

The sound design and visuals are pretty much exactly what happens when you take a hit of nitrous oxide at the peak of an acid trip.
great game, really.
Oh and it's cool cause i'm not into drugs but i LOVE most of the games in this thread!
REZ >>> ALL.
NiGHTS Into Dreams definitely deserves a mention as well!

As someone else said ZoE 1 and 2 are both pretty good at this. But especially the bonus modes in ZoE2. I used to get blazed and play until I got dizzy, going through 200 odd enemies with zero shift.

Hell the entire game is amazing. Especially going through the game again with all your subweapons. I loved playing around with Decoy.

The music also add to it a lot. I have always liked the soundtracks to these games.

I find films like Pulp Fiction and 2001: A Space Odyssey to be trippy, if that helps. I don't think trippy = "weird".
Eh? Sorry for the off topic, but Pulp Fiction and 2001???

Try: Bad Boy Bubby, Meet The Feebles, Braindead, Barfly, Naked, They Live, Eraserhead, Bad Lieutenant, Falling Down, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, just to get you started. :D

Yellow Submarine movie > everything else

I've found Knytt & Knytt Stories both excellent to play while high. Somthing about the combination of exploration gameplay with light puzzle elements, pixel graphics and a minimalist soundtrack made them super enjoyable to me.

*edit, totally forgot Aquaria, underwater metroidvania with beautiful 2d graphics, I spent a ton of time just swiming around using the song notes :)

WipEout HD, Zone Mode

I would say WipEout in general. I always found getting really stoned made me better at the game too. I used to play a ton of split screen with some mates and they had the opposite experience. At the start of the night they'd be on my ass the whole race but a few hours (and many joints) later I'd be lapping them all over the place. My heart would start pounding, the room would disappear and at one point I would become the pilot. Funnily enough, I always called this state 'the zone'.

What I really want though, is the original Zone mode. I bet you that would be amazing if you were high.

All of the Panzer Dragoon games. The whole aesthetic is just so alien and weird yet beautiful to look at (although the very first game doesn't hold up very well graphically).

Gun Valkyrie also has a similar feel to it.

MDK consisted of some really alien environments and bosses plus a few winks and nods to cement that this was the way to game was meant to be played.

If you've played SMAC as much as I have, It's FANTASTIC while high as you powergame your way in a hypnotic manner; shittin' out terraformers and trawlers and racing the transcendent AI to Air Power.

Devil May Cry 3 is great while stoned as it focuses you to play the game in a much more methodical manner. Nothing beats 10 just defends followed by a massive just release that vapourizes every motherfucker on the screen.

While I'm at it, the Thief series. If you're playing no damage and no items it is fucking INTENSE.

Can't believe this hasn't already been mentioned:

N20: Nitrous Oxide for PS1

[sorry, crappy pic]

Trippy-ass tunnel shooter with Chemical Bros soundtrack and bugged-out space aliens.

played that A LOT in high school...
