I've decided to become a vegetarian

Meat is tasty but I can't justify the death of an animal just so that I may enjoy the taste of it's meat.
So I've decided to become a pesco-vegetarian so I that I can stop rationalizing eating the meat of intelligent and empathic creatures. I also won't be eating any Cephalopods as they fit under my definition of intelligent and empathic creatures.

I guess I just have to wait for cloned meat production if I really want to eat meat.

Is anyone else here a vegetarian of some sort?

I'm a vegetarian. In this day and age it's seriosuly a piece of piss to eat well as a veggie.

That said, good luck with this thread, GAF hates veggies for some reason, we tried to have a veggie recipe thread and a load of wankers were just posting pictures of steaks and bacon for some reason :lol

:lol

Also cephalopods aren't intelligent so much as evil and delicious.

If you are a vegetarian does it mean that meat cannot even go in your mouth? Or does it just mean that meat can go into your mouth but you cannot swallow it?

I've been a vegetarian for almost four years. It's fine except when you go out to eat. Most restaurants don't have more than one vegetarian dish, and often times even the salads have meat in them.

I recommend shopping at Trader Joe's if you have one near you. They have some really good vegetarian stuff. Specifically their organic vegetarian chili is delicious.

Based on your reasoning in the first post why even bother eating fish?

For various reasons I usually try to avoid meat if possible now, but don't really see the need for labels (or a thread to announce it!). To be honest I wouldn't ever cut out meat completely because at times I think that could be kinda awkward maybe, when you go out, or when people cook for you etc.

Go vegan.
I did consider going vegan as I understand that even production of eggs and milk often lead to the suffering of the animals supplying these products. But I've decided to just get a pet goose or chicken and just eat the eggs that animal produces instead of having to support the egg industry. And when it comes to milk I'll just have to find some local farm that do not slaughter their cows and get some milk from them.

not eating meat anymore? Sorry for your loss.
Thank you, it's a pretty big sacrifice. I still love the taste of meat and once I can eat meat without it leading to animals dying then I'll be a happy camper.

Dude, what about McDonalds now?
I know :(
I'm lucky the national burger chain here has some really delicious vegetarian burgers.

My girlfriend has been a very strict vegetarian for over 10 years now and has no problem at all kissing me right after I've just eaten meat which is kinda the same thing I guess. But I imagine everyone's different...

15 years here, can't say I care too much about animals anymore but atleast I'm doing something good without too much effort.

Apparently they've come out to post as well.

Meh, go for it dude. Eat whatever the hell you want.

I am not even close to a vegetarian, but I eat vegetarian burgers and sausage from Morningstar Farms all the time. I think they taste really good and are usually ~110 calories or less, so why not?

But I go out to eat and get burgers or whatever.

About a month ago, I was going to make a thread about how I hadn't eaten any meat in about two weeks. I decided not to as it seemed kind of live-bloggy. Here's what I had typed out though:

It's really not as hard as I thought it would be. I haven't been big on beef for a long time anyways, so the big loss is chicken and fish (which so don't consider meat anyways). At the beginning I didn't make any conscious effort to not eat meat, but after a few days of being meatless I just decided to see how long I could keep it up. I feel better - healthier - than I've felt in a while, even though I've been eating junk: Meatless junk, but junk nonetheless. Maybe it's some sort of placebo effect.

Anyway, I think I'm going to try to stay meat free or at least keep the meat intake to a minimum. The biggest thing tempting me to eat meat at this point in time is my limited menu. I've been eating close to the same thing every other day or every three days and it's getting a bit tired.

-bean burrito or Cheesy Potato Burrito sub xtra beans instead of the "beef" from Taco Bell
-black bean wrap at home
-onion or raisin/cinnamon bagles
-different kinds of salads
-Fuji apples and naval oranges
-Craisens
-store-bought cheese pizza with veggies (mainly spinach leaves)
-various Archer Farms meals found in the foreign foods section (the curry potatoes and lemon rice is the best I've had so far)

So a month later I'm back on the horse, but I stand by it not being all that hard though. I'm down to eating something with a face maybe two or three days a week.

Going to people's houses and travelling are the worst two things about being vegetarian for me.

My discomfort at eating meat does outweigh my discomfort at making someone else go out of their way to prepare something for me though.

Sounds good Shan. Make sure you supplement the nutrients that meat primarily provided--b12, creatine, and probably others.

I plan to once I'm financially independent (i.e. I don't do the shopping, and I don't want to reject the food I get made for me).

Vegan would be even better, but I'm not sure if I'd be ready for the compulsive "omg dus dis hav anything that com frm animl."

I have been a veggie for about 9 years now, started for the same reasons as you, I just couldn’t justify eating animals to myself anymore.

As scotcheggz said, this day and age its easy to be a veggie as there are a huge range of meat style veggie products to buy.

I will say though, if you do decide to go through with it get ready for a lot of stupid people to not understand your reasoning and to have no idea what to feed you when you go to their house as according to them unless you eat meat your choice of meal drops down to about 2 or 3 dishes that their feeble mind can think of.

Seriously, i have been with my wife for 6.5 years and her family still insist on saying "i couldnt think of what to feed you so i chose what you always have", even though all they would need to do is replace the meat portion of their dinner with a veggie based alternative.

My apologies for your loss. Delicious meat will miss you. At least you didn't lose your mind and become a vegan.

You could just eat the meat and pretend to not enjoy it. You know, for nutrition and stuff.

But nah, just being an ass. :P It's a big change to make, good luck with it!

Right on, you've got the idea. Local is best, if anything. I won't touch fish, for many reasons. Mainly because they're so overfished, toxic, and the ones who need this particular protein simply aren't getting it. I don't eat eggs because they're basically meat, and milk is full of hormones, drugs, not to mention the supporting the veal industry. Think about it: Where do all male cows end up? Little tiny boxes so they can't move, softens their muscles (Cue Homer Simpson's mmm... veal). If you want some more insight into veganism, I highly recommend this book. This thread also comes to mind.

Yeh this, my friends know I don't eat meat and are cool with it, normally they come to mine for dinner though, so it's me going out of my way to cook them meat, unless they don't mind the veggie option. Meeting new people and being asked around for dinner is always a bit tricky though.

Travelling is also the other pain in the arse, in the UK it's easy. Elsewhere, especially asia if you don't eat fish, basically impossible. The Japanese musician Merzbow wrote a book about it and how living in japan as a veggie cripples ones social life, since so much of the socialising goes down in restaurants. He was trying to raise awareness, but yeh, that didn't work so well.

i was a vegetarian for about eight years until i moved to a country where it's functionally impossible. it's a positive lifestyle decision, so more power to you - just don't push it on anyone else, or let asshole meat-eaters that go "but bacon is SOOO GOOOD you idiot" wind you up.
