I've finally accepted it: on-screen keyboards suck

sounds like I'm the only person that uses the microphone and just has a dictation system handle all of the transcription. In fact I'm using it right now to dictate this response and it seems to be just fine and I haven't had to even put my fingers on the keyboard. :-) lol

Would work wonders sending a text in the middle of a business meeting.

"As you see, we've shown some growth with the fingerpuppet campai---

"OK GOOGLE SEND TEXT SHOW ME DEM FLOPPY TITTIES"

I would buy a well designed slider phone without question. Too bad I'm in the minority.

I held onto my Droid 4 as long as I could something I upgraded to specifically to get a 4G phone with unlimited data and a keyboard, swapping it out for refurbs anytime the slider started to shit the bed, but finally they refused to send me another of the same phone, so I got stuck with a Droid Razr Maxx.

I miss that keyboard.

I used to feel the same until I started using the Swype keyboard. It takes sometime to get used to and doesnt always QUITE work perfectly but I love it.

Maybe you shouldn't be talking about floppy tittiea during the business meeting :P Though seriously, if you are in a meeting why are you texting at all?

Yep, hate em. Trying to write on my Nexus 7 and it misses too many letters even though I'm 100% sure I did press them. There's a small latency and if you write too quickly it doesn't input all of the letters.

Swipe-to-text is the only thing keeping me from killing myself with onscreen keyboards, once you learn how and the program picks up your style, it's fantastic.

Got my first ever android a few weeks back with the nexus 5 and swype is the best thing ever for non keyboard touchscreens.

I still miss being able to text without looking on my old lg quantum :(

Loved this phone so much.

The stock keyboard on the Nexus 7 can die in a fire. Also, Google, stop fucking censoring my curse words or words like 'penis.' There's nothing vulgar about a penis.

Totally satisfied with the trade-off, honestly. Newer phones have removed pretty much all lag that plagued typing on non-optimised websites, which was the real pressure point for me with touch keyboards. iOS's auto-correct is quite good at learning words so after something like five years it only fails on a few things.

It is desperate to correct Colin Kaepernick to Colin Karp, though.

Touch keyboards are a step backwards in terms of usability and the first iterations were fucking AWFUL. Like, so bad I could out-type any iPhone/Android user using my crummy ass Windows Mobile Phone and its adjunct stylus.

You know shit is fucked up when you type slower than somebody punching letters with a piece of plastic on a 3" resistive screen.

That said, I finally embraced change and now I'm a champ with my Windows Phone keyboard. It may very well be the best non-swipeish touch keyboard out there.

I find the Windows Phone keyboard to be something that I can actually get behind every day, every week, every month, every year. It might be the first software keyboard where I can safely type without actually looking at the keyboard.

Fudging keystrokes go a long way in instilling confidence in your typing.

Yes, they do. I was a Treo person for a long time. But I finally gave in to the no keyboard phones because I like the big glass display for browsing the web.

But when it comes to typing, I hate the onscreen keyboards. I'll post short emails and short messages. But if I want to post a real message or write a substantive email, I'll go looking for a PC.

If I can't feel the keys then I'm going to completely flub whatever I'm typing. Fucking hate this onscreen keyboard shit.

I do not feel hindered by my iphone keyboard. When I first switched to the iphone from a blackberry the lack of a physical keyboard was my biggest concern, but after about a week with the iphone I no longer missed it.

In fact the autocorrect works well enough that I can type on the iphone without even looking at the keys anymore.

However the autocorrect isn't perfect, there are times when it will correct a word that I wanted to use to something else and that can be annoying, but overall I have no desire to go back to having a physical keyboard on my phone.

On another note, I think it's annoying for some reason when people type on their iPhones just using their 1 index finger. It's like watching people type on a real keyboard that way to me. I use 2 thumbs unless for some reason I can't use one of my hands.

Yep, I hate on-screen keyboards. Takes me twice as long to type a message as on a phone with a physical keyboard and it is just impossible when drunk, due to the lack of physical feedback. My next phone will definitely have a physical keyboard, even if I have to go for an older model.

I wish there were accessible smartphones with physical buttons, but also with all the technology that's common among contemporary smartphones. I really hate touch screens but there really is no satisfying option to them.

Smart phones are an incredible invention. The ability to contact someone with voice, text, or even visually is amazing considering the size of the device. Having the entire world wide web available at your finger tips is awesome. Throw in a camera capable of both pictures and video, and apps that can do countless awesome things and you have my nomination for the most amazing technological innovation in the last 30 years or more.
But man on screen keyboards suck. It took me ten times longer to type this than it would with an actual keyboard because of how useless on screen keyboards are. They are designed for child fingers and the auto correct is very clearly drunk. Also the more advanced and awesone my smart phone is. The worse the actual phone call quality seems to be. Seems like half the people I talk to sound like they are jogging in a wind tunnel filled with sirens and howling monkeys.
But still, the positive aspects truely are awe inspiring considering the level of tech just ten years ago.

Before I went Android I held out for ages, because I didn't want to give up the physical keyboard on my Samsung b5310/Genio Slide/Corby Pro. (Picture)

I am fine with on screen keyboards now, especially with Google Keyboard (and before it turned and started lagging horribly, Swype). Especially with swiping, which can be faster than tapping. Auto-correct works well enough for the most part, but it's far from perfect.
