Iwata Asks: New Super Mario Bros. 2 + new info and videos

You guys are getting me too hype for this game. It's going to be a looooooooong 3 weeks.

*dap*
also, Oni Link, i miss your old DQ (i think) bat avatar! it fit your posts so well.

Dracky. lol I thought it was kind of plain. Thing has been kicking Namor's ass in Avengers VS X-Men though.

That Gold box and reversible cover are beautiful, shame 3DS is region locked (a jerk move which still surprises me) or I'd be importing right now. Heck, I'll still import it after the U.S. release just to have the case displayed on my shelf. NOA is so incredibly and pathetically stupid sometimes. You'd think there would've been at least one guy in the Treehouse campaigning for the gold case? It's a GAME CENTERED AROUND COLLECTING GOLD, so let's use a PLAIN WHITE CASE to help with cementing the overall presentation of the game's entire idea, amirite?!

You'd think it would take more work to have a normal, non reversible cover since the JP and I'm pretty sure EU versions will be gold case with reversible cover.

That guy has to be the most boring player of a Mario game ever. Boss could be cool, but the rest of the level looked kind of underwhelming, like a less frantic DKC, but it could have just been because the guy was playing so cautiously.

That's not the whole level. He posted a video before that one that shows the first half of the level

Reversible cover :drools:

I'm gonna have a BF if we don't get this.

And I'm not touching that video, hell no. I've only seen the first level and I'm leaving it at that. I wanna see everything for myself now, just like I do when a new Pokemon game comes out.

Man, a lot of this stuff looks criminally samey as the previous two NSMB games..it's like the more I look at the game, the more I feel the entire game is being phoned in.

I think since most of the people on the team are new Nintendo just decided to give them the same basic layout of the other ones. I think they're just seeing if these new guys can create good levels and from what I've seen they definitely can make good levels. The WiiU version will definitely be the one for you if you want something a bit different from the others.

Seriously, how much would it cost to print a reversible cover and color the boxes gold?

You would think what will go on to be one the best selling 3DS games would get a little better treatment... ugh

Hmm? The more I see it, the more I feel the exact opposite way about this game. I mean, sure the aesthetics and music and such are pretty much the same as ever--Nintendo seems to have gone the safe route there and though understandable, that is kind of disappointing, especially on the music front. However, regardless of the aesthetics, I definitely can't say that this game seems to be being phoned in, as it seems to be introducing one of the potentially largest gameplay shifts for a SMB game in a while in the form of all the coin stuff. While all that coin stuff doesn't do much for just a simple, normal playthough, but what it does do is add another tremendous layer of replayability to each level due to the score-attack element it adds--not only competing with your friends scores, which will probably be a lot of fun, but also just challenging yourself to get the most out of each level as well. Following this principle, it also really encourages actually exploring each level and really learning them all inside and out so that you're able to get the best scores possible on each stage (again, both through your own experiences and perhaps watching your friends and other people go through levels and perhaps try things you wouldn't have thought of).

It's fine of course if score-attack really isn't your thing and the idea of replaying levels just to see how many coins you can get on each one doesn't really appeal to you. I'm not sure how much I'll actually bother with it myself. However, at the same time, even if that's not your thing, I don't see how you can deny how the score-elements in NSMB2 created by the focus on coins in the game add a whole new level of replayability to the game not really seen in the SMB series before and due to that shift, I couldn't possibly call this game as just being phoned in. Sure, the idea may have been a simple and obvious one really, but nonetheless, in hasn't been done in the SMB series until now and will really add a lot to it, IMO, which has gotten me real excited for this game and I personally can't wait to see just how Nintendo explored that idea in this game.

I'd probably go digital if I didn't already preorder this for $30

Mostly for the CN coins and the novelty of being the first downloadable game, plus having the game available at all times

Also, is it confirmed that Luigi isn't playable in single player? :(

You can play as Luigi by holding L and R while choosing your file, I think.

Game looks great. I was never a huge fan of the NSBM style but I feel like Nintendo is getting better and better with it. The animation looks a bit improved,
the Koopa Kids
especially look really expressive and fun.

Music is still BAH, BAH annoying though.

So, all the complaining about the BAH BAH might have been a bit premature.

You've yet to hear the worst one. (It's the credits, obvious spoilers ahead.)

It is pretty shit theyve kept this outdated mid-2000s-Nintendo bah bah style of music. The new main theme song is great, why couldn't they keep that musical style for the rest? Ahh well, doesnt matter that much

I don't mind any of the music though to be honest, never got why it gets so much flak - apart from the fact that they reuse the music.

I don't particularly mind most of it, but the biggest issue is that this is the original version of that. And now it's ruined. Forever.

The synthesized music in general just sounds...weak to me, for some reason. It'd be cool if they could step away from the synths music altogether and try doing something with real instruments...although I'm not sure if that would mix well with the NSMB style as it is now, but I don't know (Rayman Origins managed).

Yeah I guess.

Anyone know if there's a newer version of this in the game? I noticed all the other music seems to be updated slightly and I'd like to know what if my favourite NSMBWii track is in here.

What's the new main theme, the title screen music? If so, that ain't new!

Uh, the entire game finished with just 20,000-ish coins? Hopefully it's a speedrun.

That's either bullshit or, as you said, a speedrun.

I barely started World 3 and I have already 16k coins. I can see myself finishing the game with at least 50k or more coins, and if you try to get all the medals you'll probably have to repeat some levels a few times, so maybe even close to 80k or so...

PS. I'm playing each level getting all the medals, so it's taking me a while to advance. There's also a coin rush mode which gives you tons of coins but I've only played it once and got about 2k coins. I guess most people will be playing that after getting through the whole game to collect the last bunch of coins.

I'm a pretty big Nintendo fan, but Nintendo of America continues to disappoint.

On the other hand, we get 3DS XL chargers. We also got Wii Sports bundled with Wii at launch, so I can't be too upset.

As a whole, though, I keep finding little things about Nintendo to criticize.

The only thing NoA has done recently that got me really mad is the lack of a White 3DS XL. No reason why it shouldn't be there at launch.

Everything they do these days seems to be a stupid thing to do. Sigh

I would have liked a white or a black 3DS XL. I don't like the colors they're offering in NA, so there goes any current interest I have in the device.

apparently a friend of mine got a response about that and apparently its because 'NOA doesn't want to confuse possible buyers with NSMB for the DS and it's Red color scheme'

so yeah NOA confirmed to think Americans are retarded.

There is clearly only one recourse. We must merge all Nintendo branches and birth Super Nintendo -- with all the superior traits of each division.

what does this even mean lol

gold = red?

So, according to NoA, red = gold. Great. OK.

brb moving to japan

Damn I really wanna have an XL for this. I fucking hate how you have to have your OG 3DS to do a system transfer. So much for trading it in for credit. :
